Let’s just say you are looking for a summer camp for your kids, and this is your criteria:
- something active
- group-oriented
- fun
That’s not a tough list to fill. But, what if you added these requests to your list?
- teaches that winning isn’t everything
- models respect
- team-building
Then you may have a hit a home run with Home Run Baseball Camp. This 18 year-old camp is expanding to Brooklyn from Washington DC this summer. Featured on npr, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and the Today Show, this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill baseball camp. It’s a successful “schooling” of over 25,000 boys and girls with instructors that are invested in the program: 95% of the counselors and coaches are camp alumni.
When I asked the founder of HRBC, “Coach Mac” to tell me more about his camp, his sentences, like any sports enthusiast, were peppered with statistics.
- We have been to the emergency room once in 18 years and average less than 5 refund requests per year. You can expect my team to supervise your child at all times and treat them with respect and care.
- We play two fast paced games a day and how you treat others counts at my camp.
- Campers will get hundreds of swings in wiffle ball batting practice, hundreds of ground balls and fly balls in ‘square drill’ and work on throwing and pitching drills.
- The Director in Brooklyn is RJ Johnsen who has been on my staff for 14 years. He teaches 4th grade at St. Albans School in Washington and was honored by the alumni as Teacher of the Year in 2010. He is a young man of high character who has a gift for teaching and encouraging youngsters. He and his fiance are getting married in 2011.
What will they learn?
- On the field, you can expect your child to learn or improve upon their fundamentals like hitting, throwing, fielding, fly balls, baserunning and catching.
- We’ll play a game, eat lunch and do it all over again in the afternoon. We make sure players get plenty of water and shade breaks on hot days. Coaches encourage players to learn new positions and make new friends at camp.
- Our priorities are safety, fun, hustle and learning the fundamentals
