Festivals Galore This Weekend!

There’s Cherry Blossom Festival, Greenpoint Earth Day Festival, Tribeca Film Family Festival, Church Street Festival, Bike Fest, World Brooklyn Festival, Kindie Fest….let’s see am I missing any? Probably one or two, so if you know any more please put them down in the comments section!

Go Green! Greenpoint Earth Day festival
Over 100 schools, community groups, companies, and government agencies will offer exhibits, merchandise, and activities. Children’s activities: a children’s marathon by Boy Scout Troop 26, derby car racing by Cub Scout Troop 469, tumbling by Gym Park, an obstacle course by Ms J, interactive art projects by Materials for the Arts, and more.  Greencycle Swap.  One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Tree giveaways by NYS Assemblyman Joe Lentol. Art, Science & Writing contests.  Writing submissions were due last week.  Art and science contest submissions are due at 12 Noon on the day of the event. Winners will be announced at 3:30 PM and will receive cash prizes, have the opportunity to present their work on the main stage and be featured in the Greenpoint Gazette. Live Music & Performances featuring Luis Barrenechea on the violin, Suspicious Package, and Tenements.  There will also be children’s dance and circus performances by WMAAC; presentations by NYSERDA, Hudson River Foundation, and the EPA; and speeches by our local elected officers.

Tribeca Family Film Festival
Enjoy a family-friendly film film, celebrate local filmmakers, and enjoy the all day street fair. You can see special performances from Broadway shows, sample food from Tribeca’s restaurants and try everything from taekwondo lessons to hairspray painting.  There will also be two FREE screenings of Family Festival films. You will need to download the Event Map and Performance Schedule to see everything.  Full schedule is here.

Bike Fest at Pier 1

Brooklyn Bridge Park (Old Fulton and Furman Streets, Plaza and Pier 1 vehicular turn-around area) [Directions >]
Non-cyclists are encouraged to attend. Ride, walk or take public transportation to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
****For those who do ride, Bike New York will offer free valet bike parking.

Cherry Blossom Festival
This festival is a 2 day affair this weekend and not-to-be missed! Celebrate Japanese culture and horticulture this spring at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens with Sakura Matsuri– Cherry Blossom Festival. It all begins this Saturday, April 30th and runs the entire weekend with more than 60 events and performances including: Taiko Drumming  Martial Arts  Manga Artists  J-pop  Tea Ceremonies  Cosplay Fashion Show  Bonsai Demonstrations  Minbu Folk Dance  Kids’ Origami Workshop  Sudoku  and more.
Details: Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st. Buy tickets online to avoid lines at the entrance or become a member for free admission to the Garden for Sakura Matsuri and all year long. For more information and a full schedule of events, visit bbg.org/sakura.

World Brooklyn Festival
This Sunday, May 1st at the Mandarin, Spanish and French Language Expo, you can do language activities and learn all about raising bilingual children in Brooklyn.  I did an entire post on the Bike Fest- with schedule. Check it out here.

Church Street Festival
Enjoy a day of food, fun rides, games, shopping, and more. Planned activities include the FDNY Smoke House (an interactive fire safety exhibit for kids), a home run hitting contest sponsored by Bonnie Youth Club, free pony rides, free access to the HoneyDew Drop indoor playground, visits from the Northshore Animal League and Sean Casey Animal Rescue, a police car children can climb in, rides (for a fee), and much more.

KindieFest
Kids and parents alike will enjoy some of the best family acts in the world including The Verve Pipe, Elizabeth Mitchell & You Are My Flower and Tim & the Space Cadets! More artists to be announced soon! This festival marks the end of the family music industry conference, Kindiefest.

The 5th Avenue Family Festival
The festival will include activities for youth and families including face painting, puppet making crafts, and prizes. Explore the science of bubbles with the New York Hall of Science, make pizza box puppets with 7-11 of Park Slope, and create your own mask with Regal Cinemas. The event will also welcome the New York Fire Safety Education Mobile and the USMC Activity Patrol Van. Take a swing with Sandy the Seagull of the Brooklyn Cyclones at the baseball batting cage and meet the Good Neighbear of State Farm. Also patrolling the event will be fan favorites Stormtroopers and Jedi Knights from the 501st Empire City Garrison and Echo Base Rebel Legion. Taste the unique cuisine of Baluchi’s Indian Restaurant and Kappa Sake House of 5th Avenue and enjoy live performances by Waiting for Bobby, Coolsax Jazz Trio, and Tucker & Larson Jazz. There will be raffles and giveaways and the first 200 kids will receive a 5th Ave BID tote bag filled with prizes from Madame Tussauds, Dave & Busters, Cabot Creamery, and Jenkinson’s Aquarium.

Green Getaways Expo (not really a festival)
This “Green Getaways, Local Food & Travel Expo”  where you can find your next green getaway within a few hours of NYC! Local food samples, wine tasting, eco travel workshops, food demonstrations, live music, face painting and other fun kids activities throughout the day!
