Here’s a question that I bet you can answer in 3 seconds.
What issues have you dealt with as a parent?
- Work/life balance
- Keeping romance alive
- Loss of sleep
And the answer was…..? (Of course it was all of them!)
In a new romantic comedy called “Cradle and All”, two Brooklyn Heights couples work through all these tricky issues and then some. Claire and Luke are losing sleep over the decision to get married and start a family. Annie and Nat, right across the hall, have a baby who won’t sleep. Living in adjacent Brooklyn Heights apartments, both couples examine love, commitment, and life with witty dialogue, humor and emotion.
Claire feels her biological clock ticking and after 5 years of dating, they are debating the advantages (and disadvantages) of starting a family. As they go back and forth, they can hear the other couple struggling in a tension-filled night of sleep training. Annie and Nate, in the adjacent apartment, are trying (and failing) to sleep-train their 11-month old daughter. They work to find ways to entertain each other during the process. It makes for funny and witty moments where you can truly identify with the struggling couple.
Manhattan Theatre Club , winner of 2011 Drama Critic’s Best Play for “Good People”, and producer of other winners “Doubt” and “Proof”, is known for housing great drama and comedy. The tribulations of parenting provide solid fodder for both. What does happen when couples don’t see eye to eye on parenting? Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes poignant and other times too close for comfort. The larger question is: what does it mean to be fulfilled?
Intriguingly, two actors play both couples. Besides it being exciting to see actors play two different parts, it also is illuminating: the same person in different circumstances lives in a new reality. In Daniel Goldfarb’s (Sarah, Sarah; Modern Orthodox) “Cradle and All”, Tony nominee Maria Dizzia (In the Next Room) and Greg Keller (Uncle Vanya) star as both couples in this world premiere production, directed by Tony nominee Sam Buntrock (Sunday in the Park with George). The new Manhattan Theatre Club comedy began previews on May 10th and will run through June 19.
If you want a sneak peek into the set and to hear the actors, director and playwright talk, here’s a video clip that gives you a good sense of what the play is about.
