Fleet Week 2011 for families: ship tours, bands and demos

Though the Parade of Ships was on Wednesday, an entire weekend of Fleet Week celebrations is still to come. Thousands of sailors, marines and Coast Guardsmen descend on New York City to celebrate sea services during Fleet Week,   You can see bands and demonstrations at The Intrepid, and tour other Military ships as they visit New York Harbor. Enjoy special Broadway performances, see air ground demos and watch the military battle it out in the famous Tug of War.  Lastly, view the annual Memorial Day ceremony on the Flight Deck of Intrepid with an unfurling of the 100-foot-long American Flag.

Below is what is happening at Fleet Week.

Friday, May 27th:

  • At the Intrepid: Pier Displays, Broadway Showcases, Bands from the U.S. Coast Guard, Statue of Liberty.

Saturday, May 28th:

  • At the Intrepid: Pier Displays, tours of an Army vessel, Broadway Showcases, Security Forces Working Dogs Demo, live music.
  • At Pier 88, Manhattan: From 8:30 am- 5 pm, try out a Navy Flight Simulator.
  • Marine Day in Battery Park from 9 am- 6 pm.

Sunday, May 29th:

  • At the Intrepid: Pier Displays, tours of an Army vessel, jazz, Military Tug of War, Swing band.
  • See a U.A. Marine Corps Air Ground Task Force Demo: Corona Park, Queens from 10 am- 12 pm
  • U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Helo Demonstration, Homeport Pier, Staten Island, NY from 11 – 11:30 am
  • Military Bands in Times Square from 2-5 pm

Monday, May 30th:

  • At the Intrepid: Pier Displays, tours of an Army vessel, Memorial Day Ceremony, demo of U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue
  • At Pier 88, Manhattan: From 8:30 am- 5 pm, try out a Navy Flight Simulator.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration, Hudson River near Piers 86 & 88, Manhattan from 2-3 pm

USCG Willow & USCG Tampa close at 2:30pm on Saturday.
USCG Willow & USCG Tampa depart Saturday.  USCG Reliance arrives for Monday and Tuesday visitation
