If you. (like me), missed The Big Apple Circus’ performance at Lincoln Center that everyone raved about, don’t worry, the circus is back in town again…in Stamford, CT. Yes, seems far, but it’s actually only a 1 hour trip by car or a 45 minute train trip. Just make it a whole day adventure by visiting Calf Pasture Beach, the largest architectural salvage dealer, a cruise or the local branch of the Whitney Museum. But what I would really do? Head for one of Stamford’s lovely beaches with fabulous views of Long Island Sound.
The Big Apple Circus’ All-New Show, Dance On! is a true big top experience with clowns, silly slapstick humor, trapeeze artists and acrobats who seem to defy gravity. It’s impossible not to laugh at Rob Torres’ seer sucker clad clown, whose goofy flirtatiousness and Dick Van Dyke-awkwardness is appealing to all ages. Torres’ predicated flubs are a good foil to the serious feats of the acrobats.
Some of the other unique acts include the African Acrobats who excel in strength and gymnastic skills and the X Bud Roses Troupe who bend their bodies on top of each other like beautiful butterflies.
To the delight of many of the children, white mini-horses are the center of American Jenny Vidbel’s act. The gorgeous horses around the ring in tight configurations and even let a group of goats ride saddle side. This is the only animal act in the whole circus and while it does include horses, goats and fluffy collies, it seems “okay” as they are all essentially “pets”. Well, I guess you can argue that goats are not, of course.
Overhead, a trapeze artist flies, flips and flies with a beaming smile as the audience gasps. I, in particular, could barely stand it and was fearful for her at every trick she performed. She was superb and thrilling to watch.
