Good news for Fort Greene and Boerum Hill parents- you have a new school option. If you don’t live in those neighborhoods and are interested in bilingualism or even trilingualism, we’re betting you would be willing to travel for this educational opportunity that opens this September. Science, Language, and Arts, an international French-based creative school, currently has a few spots open for 2011 (for children 4-6/7). It’s a mixed- aged classroom with children ages 4-6/7 and will open a Pre-K and 1st-2nd in Fall 2012. The program includes a curriculum based on (um… yes) Science, Language, and Arts. It focuses “on hands-on experiments, critical thinking and questioning.” The core of the courses are taught using a 70% French / 30% English immersion model where they will eventually learn to read and write in English and in French. Children are also exposed to Mandarin through music, role-playing, games, and play where, as they get older, they will learn to read and write Chinese characters. The school also intermixes course work so your child may have a social studies course where dance is integrated or a science class where drawing is integrated, etc. The school also has daily physical activity such as group sports, free play, and nature walks.
The school is housed in the Brooklyn Music School building, right behind BAM on Felix Street. This is where the Brooklyn Waldorf School was located before their move this fall to Claver Place. Having been at the Waldorf for a few years, we can attest to the large, sunny classrooms (and outdated bathrooms!). Other amenities that Science, Language, and Arts will have access to by being at Brooklyn Music School: two dance/movement studios, a full-size theater, a brand-new state-of-the-art computer lab, close proximity to Fort Greene Park, and being located 1-2 blocks from just about every subway line in NYC.
To learn more, the Science, Language, and Arts school is holding a parent information meeting on Thursday, August 11th from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the new building. At this meeting, interested parties will be able to watch a presentation, ask questions, and view the school via tour. The school asks that children be left at home since their meeting space is a bit small, but they can attend if necessary. RSVP by clicking here for the exact address and for additional details.
Tuition for 2011-12 is $12,500 and they hope to be able to offer tuition tiers in 2012.
