Call For Submissions: Spirituality and Motherhood

With all the creating, inspiring parents I meet in Brooklyn, I thought some of you might be interested in this “call for papers” from the Museum of Motherhood (MOM Museum) for their one day conference entitled “Spirituality & Motherhood.” The call is for submissions from a variety of professions ranging from academic theorists, front-line practitioners, artists, performers, and spiritual healers. So, if you are an artist, scholar, student, activist, community agency, journalist, mother and others who work in the area of spirituality and motherhood- apply! If you aren’t a creator, this looks like a good conference to attend as the goal is to make a space where we all can “re-imagine pregnancy, birth and parenting as a spiritual act or awakening and to in-turn empower children as true catalysts of transformation.”

The 1-day conference on April 2, 2012 aims to highlight the transformative and spiritual dimensions of motherhood.  Here is more about the conference: “Although spiritual awakening has been described in major life changes (e.g., religious conversion, death, illness, immigration, etc.) there has been a ‘strange neglect’ of spiritual experiencing in the extra-ordinary life transition known as motherhood.  Motherhood can be seen as encompassing joy and pain, costs and rewards– an ordeal and an opportunity. Mothers themselves have described “becoming a mother” as a dramatic reorientation in how they come to see the self, others, the world, and even God. Viewed through the lens of spirituality, the daily and even paradoxical experiences of mothering can initiate profound healing and evolution of consciousness in women who answer the call to motherhood.
