P.S. 84 in Williamsburg, a Magnet School for the Visual Arts and Sciences, will be offering the ASD Nest program beginning in 2013 with the opening of two kindergartens and will be the only school in the area to provide these services.
What is ASD Nest?
From the NYC DOE: The ASD Nest program is an integrated Co-Teaching program for higher functioning children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Nestled within the supportive neighborhood schools, the ASD Nest program helps children learn how to function well academically, behaviorally, and socially in school and in their community.
The program at P.S. 84 class will have two teachers teaching four ASD children along with eight typically developing children. That’s a 6/1 ratio. They are actively recruiting both high functioning autistic children
and typically developing children for this new program. The ASD Nest program provides a therapeutic environment in which the requisite supports are provided by a transdisciplinary team of specially trained educators and therapists.
Interested families should contact the school directly.
Insideschools review of P.S. 84
“If we had to pick one word to describe PS 84, it would be momentum. This once struggling school is undergoing a rapid transformation thanks to new leadership, a popular district-wide dual language program and a huge surge in parent involvement.
