Weekend Events: Superhero Day, Carribean Fiesta, BAMcinemaFest, and Much More!

Four historic vessels (l to r) Lehigh Valley Barge No. 79, tug Pegasus, steamer Lilac, and fireboat John J. Harvey will participate in the 2012 North River Historic Ship Festival. Photo by Milo Hess.

We’re pretty psyched about the events and activities this weekend. Seriously, I need a clone to be able to get to all of them with my son! On Friday, if your children are superhero fanatics, then Superhero Day at The Brooklyn Museum is where you want to find yourself. On Sunday, head to BAM for the BAMcinemaFest, or ride a vintage train with the Transit Museum to the heart of Brooklyn. One of the biggest events this weekend is the Historic Ship Festival- don’t wait to get tickets to the Showboat Circus that will be performing there and just know that you will have to line up early to get on one of the boats.  Also, this is the last weekend to visit the Bronx Zoo for Animal Tales Extravaganza so plan accordingly if you haven’t had the time to check it out yet. Likewise, it’s the last weekend to see The Amazing Max put on a magic show like never before!  And remember, be sure to visit our events calendar for more weekend fun!

Keith Haring Exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum
Head to the Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing, 5th Floor to visit this exhibit. The exhibition chronicles the period in Haring’s career from his arrival in New York City through the years when he started his studio practice and began making public and political art on the city streets. Pieces on view include a number of very early works never before seen in public; seven video pieces, including Painting Myself into a Corner (his first video piece) and Tribute to Gloria Vanderbilt; and collages created from cut-up fragments of his own writing, history textbooks, and newspapers. One mother, Gretchen, cautioned that, “It features a lot of his angry work including beastiality and I found it inappropriate for young kids.  The tiny partition has two great videos of him painting a canvas on the floor, but the rest of the room is peppered with older content kind of stuff and there’s only one way in and out.  Ended up with a nice reason to see the collection at BMA though.” Perhaps 10 years and up is best for this one.

All Summer
Food’s up

One of the best changes to Brooklyn Bridge Park last year was the addition of great food vendors. What is still missing: shade! A lot of the vendors will be opening this weekend so it’s a perfect time to head to the park, or hop on the ferry or just chill and score a great lunch. I will be heading to my favorites Bark Hot Dogs and Ditch Plains and summer wouldn’t be complete without an ice cream from Uncle Louie G or Blue Marble. The full list of park vendors and their operating hours is here.

All Summer Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm — 4pm

Magic! The Amazing Max and The Box of Interesting Things
Magician Max Darwin makes objects appear out of thin air, as the laws of physics are defied, and miracles are performed inches from spectators’ faces. This isn’t a show that you ask, “How did he do that?” It’s not that Max doesn’t do great tricks, he does. It’s that the show is so focused on the hijinks of Hamlet the mind-reading pig and the silliness of coins appearing out of every bodily orifice, that the audience doesn’t have time to focus on the head-scratching things Max performs. The magic is just the sideshow to a very entertaining and engaging performance. Our full review is here.

The 4th annual BAMcinemaFest features three great events perfect for the whole family: balloon-themed shorts program Take Me to the Balloony Bin!, coming-of-age fantasy Crazy and Thief; and the oldest animated feature,The Adventures of Prince Achmed, with live musical accompaniment.
Schedule:
The Adventures of Prince Achmed — Under the influence of Georges Méliès’ special effects, pioneering avant-garde German filmmaker and artist Lotte Reiniger employed silhouettes of cardboard cutouts on illuminated glass to craft this dreamlike homage to The Arabian Nights, in which a prince joins forces with Aladdin and a magic horse to vanquish an army of demons. Accompanied by live music from BAMcinématek favorites 3epkano, who have previously performed at BAM five times with thrilling scores to Murnau’s Sunrise, Lang’s Metropolis, and Pabst’s Diary of a Lost Girl, among others, the Irish ambient group joins forces with avant-garde cellist Erik Friedlander as they find their muse in the oldest surviving animated feature.
Details: 30 Lafeyette Avenue, Brooklyn. All are welcomed. Cost: $15 for Adults, $10 for Children. Contact: 718-636-4129. Visit the website for more information.
