Wild Wednesdays at the High Line (14th Street Passage)

Wednesdays 4-6p.  Free and open to kids ages four and up accompanied by caregivers.  During this weekly drop-in program kids and their caregivers will have the chance to look closely at a leaf, watch a butterfly fly, or hold a wriggly worm in the palm of your hand. Each month focuses on a different topic, with fun activities each week. The months culminate with a Creature Feature activity showcasing a live High Line critter.

This month, explore the life-cycle of plants every Wednesday in July, with fun interactive activities to show how plant structures help them survive and thrive.  Wild Wednesday takes place rain or shine, but may be cancelled in the event of severe weather. Theaterworks USA: The Civil War at  Lucille Lortel Theater (Chelsea)

No babies in arms.  The Civil War is a 60-minute, one-act musical.  The Civil War is the story of people from different backgrounds fighting for the future of the nation – both sides believing they are fighting for freedom.  With music from the period and many different character perspectives, this historical musical educates the next generation of young people about a major event in the history of our country.

How to Get Tickets: A limited number of free tickets will be made available to individuals each show day at the theatre on a first come, first served basis.  Tickets for each day’s performances will be distributed beginning one hour prior to the first performance of the day. Pippi/NYC-ARTS at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

Sandbox Music: Learn to accompany live brass instruments with your own percussion under the guidance of professional teaching musicians from Central Park Brass.

Sandbox Puppets: Watch Ant and Grasshopper, Cat and Mouse, and many other characters tell folk and fairy tales brought to life by puppeteers from Wonder Spark Puppets.

Sandbox Stories: Hear stories about goblins, shoemakers, witches, princesses, fools and much more performed by New York City based storyteller Dan Kitrosser.

Monkey: Journey to the West at Lincoln Center (Lincoln Center/UWS)

This summer open play hours are Mon, Wed, Fri (tentative) & Sat 1030a-1230p.  $15/drop in fee (no registration fee).  Drop In for Open Play and enjoy up to 2 hours of fun, exercise & friends with a parent or caregiver. CityParks Tennis free tennis lessons at in more than 36 parks throughout the five boroughs

Now until August 9th.  Various times and locations.  Free tennis lessons to thousands of kids ages 6 to 16 each year in more than 36 parks throughout the five boroughs.  The program promotes physical fitness while building self confidence, and is designed to make the sport of tennis freely available to those who want to learn the game in a fun, relaxed environment. Mad. Sq. Art Presents Orly Genger: Red, Yellow and Blue @ Madison Sq Park (Flatiron)

Now until – September 8th, 2013.  Madison Square Park Conservancy’s Mad. Sq. Art announces a new installation for Spring and Summer 2013 by New York-based artist Orly Genger. The monumental commission entitled Red, Yellow and Blue will feature the artist’s renowned usage of intricately hand-knotted nautical rope covered in paint, creating a work that will transform the park’s lush lawns into colorfully-lined chambers. The work will remain on view daily.

Le Carrousel in Bryant Park, specially created to complement the park’s French classical style, is an homage to both European and American traditions. Its fourteen delightful animals, replicas of classic carousel creatures, revolve to the sounds of French cabaret music. The rounding boards, inspired by Bryant Park’s elegant baroque-style torchères along 40th Street, blend into the leafy canopy of the park’s plane trees.

summer hours for Prospect Park Carourel in Prospect Park

Now until Sept 2 Thursday-Sunday & holidays: 12 – 6p.  $2.00 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets,  for all ages.  Located in the Park’s “Children’s Corner,” the Carousel features 53 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. Carved in 1912 by Charles Carmel, one of the foremost carousel designers of the time, and restored by the Prospect Park Alliance in 1990, the Carousel promises that classic summertime amusement will be available for generations of fun. In addition, the Prospect Park Carousel is one of the few in the world that is wheelchair accessible.  While at the Carousel grab an ice cream, popcorn or cold beverage from the Pony Express Snack Bar.

Whales: Giants of the Deep at The American Museum of Natural History (UWS)

This spring, tree house architect Roderick Romero is creating a new site-specific installation using wood from trees felled by Hurricane Sandy. This whimsical, inhabitable sculpture will be part open-air classroom, part viewing point, and part artwork. Created specifically for BBG, the intriguing work will invite visitors of all ages to experience the Garden in a new way.
