I’ll admit it…I can’t cook. I have tried, but it is just not something that comes naturally to me. I get intimidated in the kitchen, I have a hard time pulling together random ingredients on the fly and I am not talented at improvising. So, I took a workshop with Purple Kale Kitchenworks, a local culinary studio. And, it changed the way I look at preparing food and how I cook. The approach is an ingredient-driven, zero-waste, resourceful and sustainable system for cooking great, original, impromptu meals at home. The instructors have a professional background in the kitchen, but they adapt their program to the constraints, quirks, challenges, and mishaps of (family) life.
The most helpful tip I took away from the class with was how to “hold” food so it is easier to cook and eat when you’re ready. That might mean doing some washing or cutting right when you get home from the market or doing some simple pre-cooking for a later dinner. Another way I have transformed our kitchen and our eating habits is I prepare foods (especially snacks) that I want my kids to eat but they can just grab themselves. That can be as simple as having apples out that are washed or divvying up small portions in small containers.
Purple Kale Kitchenworks is offering three upcoming parent workshops. The workshop is 5 hours. It is interactive and intimate, and for any skill level or experience. It comes with an elegant lunch that illustrates the Purple Kale technique and a 60-page workbook filled with strategies to change the way you put meals together. They also send you off with sample provisions to get you started at home.
The next parent workshops are Sunday, September 22; Friday, October 18; and Saturday, November 9th. Each workshop is $325 (or $275 per person if 2 or more people sign up together). Read more about why this is a deal. Purple Kale Kitchenworks is located in South Slope – 221 20th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11232
