Fun Weekday Events for September 23rd-26th in NYC!

NYBGHi all,

Hard to believe Autumn is here and this is the last full week in September!  39 days until Halloween!  We have already started talking about it in our house!  It is a busy & fun time of year and did you know you can already see some pumpkins at The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at The New York Botanical Garden!

Sacred Studio has extended it’s Pay As You Desire week so if you missed it last week you have still to try out a class!  Also going on this week is Special Weekday Programs at NY Transit Museum for Sukkot, Back to School Arts & Crafts and a free Newborn Workshop!

Monday September 23rd

Yo Re Mi / Pay What You Desire Demo at Sacred Studio (Bed Stuy)
Monday September 23rd 4-5p.  Ages 2-8y.
Yo Re Mi is a musical yoga program for children. In each fun-filled session, we journey to exotic destinations using our bodies, voices, and imaginations. We collaboratively explore nature, geography, culture, rhythm, dance, songwriting and playing instruments. Through Yo Re Mi’s unique integration of yoga and music, children develop self-confidence, focus, communication, and mind-body awareness. Art-based Spanish Free Trial Class at The Language and Laughter Studio (Boerum Hill)
September 23 @ 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm. Free
Art-based Spanish (K – 3rd Grade).  Age: 5 – 9 years old.  Semester dates: 9/23 – 12/16. (No class Oct 14th and Nov 11th)  Mondays 3:30 – 5:00pm.  Teacher: Julia Patinella.  Semester price: $490

Acquisition of words and expression through age-appropriate activities and experiments. This class adopts a multi-disciplinary approach that may combine artistic expression , songs (explore rhythms and melodies in Spanish), movement (mini-choreographies) and reading while focusing on the development of the child’s linguistic skills.  Arts and crafts projects will reinforce the fundamentals of the language. The class will be adapted to meet the skill levels of each individual child.  The after-school  includes a balance of stimulating and relaxing activities.

Fees for workshops held at Parents Helping Parents are based on a sliding scale from $15 to $35/family.

Baby Breakfast Playdate at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)

Tuesdays 10a-12n.  Free.  The courtyard of Habana Outpost is transformed into a toddler wonderland complete with toys, water table & supervised art projects geared for children 4 & under.  Meet your neighbors and watch your babies make new friends.

Music with Miss Katie at LARK (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Tuesdays 11a-1145a.  $5.  Miss Katie is equal parts educator and entertainer, with just as much experience in the classroom as on the stage. A former preschool teacher, she still rocks with the kids by day, teaching music classes to young children all over Brooklyn, while at night she sings her heart out as a singer/songwriter at various venues around the city. Free Newborn Workshop at Birth Day Presence Studio (Park Slope)
Tuesday Sept 24, 1130am-1215pm. FREE!
Join Dan Rindler, director of Child’Space NYC, to learn techniques of touch for soothing, help with gas/digestion, and to support motor development. Learn guidelines for beginning tummy-time, and answer questions about your baby’s development. For babies under 4m.

Cool Free Lunchtime Concert Series Returns at Richard Tucker Park (UWS)
Wednesday September 25th (last day!) 12n-2p.  Free.
Richard Tucker Park 66th Street & Broadway.  The Lincoln Square BID’s Free Lunchtime Concert Series is back for a sixth season!
Yogaworks will be giving free restorative stretch sessions that in between music sets, perfect for people looking for some lunch time relaxation. Additionally, local restaurants will offer free lemonade to help yoga enthusiasts and music lovers cool down.

Free Story Time & Play Date at Hank & JoJo (Fort Greene)
Wednesdays 3-4p.  Free.  Ages 0-5y.
Join us for a Story Time with Tracey Mantrone from the Clinton Hill chapter of the NY Public Library! After the stories, stay until 4pm to play with other kids from the neighborhood! Space is limited, first come first serve! Please come STROLLER FREE.

Arts & Crafts for ages 3 years to 12 years.  Caregivers must attend for ages 3-6.

Post Pregnancy Pilates at Caribou Baby (Greenpoint/Williamsburg)
Thursdays 1015a-11a.  Price: $20 for drop in, $75 for 5 class cards
You have a new baby and a new body. Now what?
To help you get back to feeling more like yourself, you need a little time for yourself. This class will give you the opportunity to focus on you and healing your body. In this class we will:

Build a strong foundation by working your pelvic floor
Strengthen your abdominal muscles, working carefully around your diastasis (if any exists)
Work your whole body, gently, building up to a strong workout
Learn how to use Pilates in your daily life to handle your baby and all the baby gear with ease
Experience the common bond between you and other new moms, swap stories, give advice and have fun.

Regardless of whether or not you are feeling sluggish and weak or ready to get up and go running, we will start from the beginning so that we can advance safely and get your body feeling and looking fabulous in no time. Pilates is the safest, most effective way to make it happen!  Pre-crawling babies are welcome!

Sensory Room Family Hours at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Thursdays at 2p (and Tuesdays, Saturdays & Sundays at 2p)
For all ages. Free with museum admission.  Over, under, swing and rock as you explore our newest space at BCM. Unlock doors on our Sensory Snake or relax and read on our fluff chair mountain This is an inclusive space that engages children of all abilities. This room provides a welcoming environment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Space is limited; availability on first come, first served basis.  Admission is $9.00 per person. Admission is free for Museum members and children under 1 year of age.

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
September 21st – October 31st The Garden is open year-round, Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
The Haunted Pumpkin Garden is Back and Spookier than Ever!

Experience the thrills and chills of the season with a garden full of intricately carved pumpkin sculptures, bugs, bats, parades, and more. New this year, the Haunted Pumpkin Garden features creepy creature encounters every weekend and the largest Spooky Nighttime Adventures trail ever! On October 19–20, watch master carver Ray Villafane of Food Network fame transform humongous pumpkins into unearthly creatures. It’s so much fun, it’s scary!

Pumpkin sculptures of spooky scarecrows, frightening spiders, sneaky snakes, and more await discovery at every turn in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. The display includes more than 500 intricately carved pumpkins that are sure to capture your youngster’s imagination. Every day kids can play inside a “gourd-geous” Pumpkin House, put on a scary show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, look for wiggly worms under a rotting log, and join a Halloween Parade, while every weekend offers even more treats.

Admission to the NYBG varies on the day of the week so see website for ticket prices.

Sing Along & Open Play at Creative Arts Studio (Boerum Hill)
M-F 1p-230p.  ArtsCetera temporary home for their drop in creative open play for ages 0-4y with a sing along about 30 minutes into the session. $10 per family

Tesla’s Wonderful World of Electricity at  New York Hall of Science (Queens)

Now until Sunday October 20th.  Free with NYSCI admission.  Admission:  Adults (ages 18 & older): $11  Children (ages 2 – 17): $8.  Explore the life and legacy of scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla through working models of his inventions, models of his laboratories and plants, photographic reproductions, and a narrative about Tesla’s life and work.

Tuesdays 8a-6p (March – October) FREE admission and also Free Saturdays 10a-12n.

Preschool Play @ Wagner Park (Battery Park City)

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, now through Oct 30, 2013, 10am-12noon.  Free.
Join other toddlers, parents and caregivers for interactive play on a grassy lawn. Toys, books, and play equipment provided.  No sessions 10/14.   Location just north of Historic Battery Park, off Battery Place.

Free Storytime at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)

Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays at 11a for all ages.  Join The Scholastic Storyteller for readings of all-time favorite children’s books or new releases from Scholastic!  Perfect for babies and toddlers, these stories will spark imagination and fun in your budding bookworm.  Stroller Entrance: 130 Mercer Street.

Luna Park (Coney Island)

Open until Halloween mostly just weekends various times (see website for more info).  Ages 3 and up. Cost: Pay-per-ride or POP packages available.  Take a thrilling ride on the famous Cyclone or one of the new rides debuting for the 2013 season.

Fall hours for Prospect Park Carousel in Prospect Park

Now until October 27th.  Thursday-Sunday & holidays: 12 – 5p.  $2.00 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets,  for all ages.  Located in the Park’s “Children’s Corner,” the Carousel features 53 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. Carved in 1912 by Charles Carmel, one of the foremost carousel designers of the time, and restored by the Prospect Park Alliance in 1990, the Carousel promises that classic summertime amusement will be available for generations of fun. In addition, the Prospect Park Carousel is one of the few in the world that is wheelchair accessible.  While at the Carousel grab an ice cream, popcorn or cold beverage from the Pony Express Snack Bar.

Toddler Storytime in Nolen Library @ The Metropolitan Museum of Art (UWS)Mon-Fri 1030-11a.  Look, listen, and have fun with picture books in Nolen Library. For families with children ages 18 months–3 years. Free with Museum admission but storytime is limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Recommended admission: Adults $25, Seniors (65+) $17, children under 12 free (with adult).

Open Play at The Learning Garden (Prospect Heights)

M-F 11-6p. Daily Pass $12. (a variety of play passes also available see website fore more information).  Our popular Open Play program is a time that offers a social learning environment for your children (ages 0-4y) to grow and learn through creative play. With our space changing and growing every week, your little explorer will have lots to discover. Materials and activities are provided to engage you and your child while sparking their imagination.
