Fun Weekday Events for September 30th-October 3rd in NYC!

We have been so lucky with this gorgeous weather and hope everyone is enjoying the weather and all the fun events around NYC!

Another busy week!  We have a new show starting at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park to get us in the mood for Halloween!  We also have Masterpiece Monday starting up at The Jewish Museum and if you missed the September Diaper Free In NYC: Elimination Communication Meetup at Caribou Baby the October meetup is this week!  Also going on is FREE Thursday hours at Brooklyn Children’s Museum and a free trial of Brooklyn Balasana Storytime Yoga!

The Crafty Kids Crafting Hour at The Learning Experience (Lower Manhattan)
Every Monday from 930-1030a through October 28th.  Free.
The Crafty Kids will be hosting a free crafting event at The Learning Experience. The event will provide a craft activity in a weekly theme such as healthy eating, nature, and others
Legendary Artist and Author Eric Carle To Sign Books At NY Public Library (midtown)
Monday, September 30, 2013, 10:30 – 11:45 a.m. at NYPL Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Astor Hall.  For all ages.
Eric Carle, beloved creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and a host of other best-selling children’s works, will be signing copies of his new book, FRIENDS, on Monday, Sept. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at The New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street.

The upbeat picture book by the acclaimed author and artist centers around a spunky young boy who braves currents, mountains, and rain before, finally, reuniting with a friend who moved away.
The book – published by Penguin Group USA – is not in stores until November 19, but a limited number will be available for purchase exclusively at The Library Shop during the signing, which will take place in Astor Hall, right through the Library’s Fifth Avenue entrance.

Every other Monday starting September 30th until December 23rd 330-430p
Explore the galleries with sketching, art activities and more in this fun afternoon series. Free with Museum admission. Free with Museum admission. Admission: Adults $15, children under 18 free.

Tuesday October 1st

 

$10 Tuesdays Open Play at Klub 4 Kidz (Williamsburg)
Tuesdays 9a-6p
With so many ways for kids to have fun at Klub4Kidz, why stay home? Gather your friends and plan your next play date here. The fun begins with our 4-tier indoor playground with a bunch of twisty-twirly tubes to crawl through and explore! Children can climb up a ramp, cross web bridges, soar on our zip line at the top of our structure and speed down one of the three slides to start all over again! Kids can dance, play video games and board games or color in our Party Room when it’s open, and younger ones can play in our Toddler Room! And of course, our Rock Wall opens at 3pm to children over 3. Please feel free to inquire with any of our staff members on what other exciting goings-on are happening at K4K.

Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Starts Tuesday October 1st 1030a & 12n and various days & times until Saturday November 2nd (check website here).  Tickets: $7 children under 12y & $10 13y and up
Safely back at home during the Halloween season; Hansel and Gretel experience the most vivid dreams where Central Park and the Belvedere Castle serve as the backdrop for a magical explosion of music, dance and exciting encounters with a host of lovable characters. The brother and sister team once again embark on an adventure where beautiful mermaids, adorable monsters, swashbuckling pirates, charming vampires and a fabulous witch all intertwine for one unforgettable Halloween night in New York City.

Cooking for Toddlers at Taste Buds Kitchen (Chelsea)
Tuesday October 1st 2-4p.  Adult class.  $60.
We’ll walk you through a healthy and delicious menu covering breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time.  All recipes are easy to prepare, delicious and incorporate seasonal menu items. The goal of this class is to give you the tools and recipes to make variations of our recipes that cater specifically to your toddler and their tastes as well as introduce new and healthy ingredients! Every attendee takes home leftovers for your toddler to enjoy.

Wednesday October 2nd

 

Yellow Sneaker Singalongs at Tea Lounge (Park Slope)
Wednesdays at 10a.  $5/family.  For kids age 0-5 and their families​. A Yellow Sneaker Sing-Along is a 45 minute interactive singalong with puppets and guitar, combining original songs, oldies, and traditional children’s music.  Sing, clap, dance, and shake your sillies out!

Babies and Books @ Central BPL (Prospect Heights)
Wednesdays 10-1025a and 1030-1055a.  Enjoy books, songs and rhymes. 0 to 18 months.  Space is limited.  Pick up a ticket at the Children’s Reference Desk on the morning of the program.

Diaper Free in NY:  Elimination Communication Meetup @ Caribou Baby (Greenpoint/Williamsburg)
First Wednesday of the Month, 10:15-12PM.  Free.

Elimination Communication (EC) is practiced in several countries and is based on the principal that babies can give and receive cues about going potty. Do you practice EC? Would you like to learn more?  Come join other newbies and experienced EC’ers at Caribou Baby! Moms, dads and caregivers are welcome with or without babies.

The meetup begins with an information session lasting about 30 minutes which covers the basics of EC.  This will be followed by an informal discussion where people can share their experiences, ask questions and connect with others practicing EC. Please bring your own potty (if you’d like) and a towel or blanket to catch any spills. There will also be access to a restroom which has a standard toilet and a toddler potty.

Brooklyn Balasana Storytime Yoga FREE TRIAL at Terrace Dance Studio (South Slope/Windsor Terrace)
Thursday October 3rd 10-11a Free trial of a brand new drop in storytime yoga in South Slope/Windsor Terrace. Using stories and song to introduce simple asana and breathing to the smallest yogis. Class is book-ended with restorative yoga for the deserving grown-ups in the room, while your child is engaged and supervised.

Lavender Blues at Play Kids (Prospect Lefferts Gardens)
Thursdays 10am.  Ages 0 -5y.  $5/family.  Come along with teacher, Alex as she takes you on a musical journey across the ocean. Be on the lookout for silly songs, dancing, and bubbles!

FREE THURSDAY HOURS at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Thursdays 3p-5p for all ages.
Come join us for our FREE afternoon hours at the Museum, EVERY Thursday of the month! Free hours start at 3:00pm, and the Museum stays open until 5:00pm for all your fun exploring!

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
Now until October 31st The Garden is open year-round, Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
The Haunted Pumpkin Garden is Back and Spookier than Ever!

Experience the thrills and chills of the season with a garden full of intricately carved pumpkin sculptures, bugs, bats, parades, and more. New this year, the Haunted Pumpkin Garden features creepy creature encounters every weekend and the largest Spooky Nighttime Adventures trail ever! On October 19–20, watch master carver Ray Villafane of Food Network fame transform humongous pumpkins into unearthly creatures. It’s so much fun, it’s scary!

Pumpkin sculptures of spooky scarecrows, frightening spiders, sneaky snakes, and more await discovery at every turn in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. The display includes more than 500 intricately carved pumpkins that are sure to capture your youngster’s imagination. Every day kids can play inside a “gourd-geous” Pumpkin House, put on a scary show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, look for wiggly worms under a rotting log, and join a Halloween Parade, while every weekend offers even more treats.

Admission to the NYBG varies on the day of the week so see website for ticket prices.

M-F 1p-230p.  ArtsCetera temporary home for their drop in creative open play for ages 0-4y with a sing along about 30 minutes into the session. $10 per family

Tesla’s Wonderful World of Electricity at  New York Hall of Science (Queens)

Now until Sunday October 20th.  Free with NYSCI admission.  Admission:  Adults (ages 18 & older): $11  Children (ages 2 – 17): $8.  Explore the life and legacy of scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla through working models of his inventions, models of his laboratories and plants, photographic reproductions, and a narrative about Tesla’s life and work.

Tuesdays 8a-6p (March – October) FREE admission and also Free Saturdays 10a-12n.

Preschool Play @ Wagner Park (Battery Park City)

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, now through Oct 30, 2013, 10am-12noon.  Free.
Join other toddlers, parents and caregivers for interactive play on a grassy lawn. Toys, books, and play equipment provided.  No sessions 10/14.   Location just north of Historic Battery Park, off Battery Place.

Free Storytime at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)

Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays at 11a for all ages.  Join The Scholastic Storyteller for readings of all-time favorite children’s books or new releases from Scholastic!  Perfect for babies and toddlers, these stories will spark imagination and fun in your budding bookworm.  Stroller Entrance: 130 Mercer Street.

Fall hours for Prospect Park Carousel in Prospect Park

Now until October 27th.  Thursday-Sunday & holidays: 12 – 5p.  $2.00 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets,  for all ages.  Located in the Park’s “Children’s Corner,” the Carousel features 53 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. Carved in 1912 by Charles Carmel, one of the foremost carousel designers of the time, and restored by the Prospect Park Alliance in 1990, the Carousel promises that classic summertime amusement will be available for generations of fun. In addition, the Prospect Park Carousel is one of the few in the world that is wheelchair accessible.  While at the Carousel grab an ice cream, popcorn or cold beverage from the Pony Express Snack Bar.

Toddler Storytime in Nolen Library @ The Metropolitan Museum of Art (UWS)

Mon-Fri 1030-11a.  Look, listen, and have fun with picture books in Nolen Library. For families with children ages 18 months–3 years. Free with Museum admission but storytime is limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Recommended admission: Adults $25, Seniors (65+) $17, children under 12 free (with adult).

Open Play at The Learning Garden (Prospect Heights)

M-F 11-6p. Daily Pass $12. (a variety of play passes also available see website fore more information).  Our popular Open Play program is a time that offers a social learning environment for your children (ages 0-4y) to grow and learn through creative play. With our space changing and growing every week, your little explorer will have lots to discover. Materials and activities are provided to engage you and your child while sparking their imagination.
