Fun Weekday Activities for October 7th-10th in NYC!

Hi everyone!

Hope you had a great weekend and are ready to start thinking about the week ahead!

Think we may actually see some rain this week but hopefully it won’t be too bad!  This week we have the final Baby Breakfast at Habana Outpost  of the 2013 season so swing on by the Bye Bye Baby Breakfast event and we also have listed below a sample of all the drop ins on the calendar!  There is a sing a long at Lark and a Community Class at Karma Kids Yoga!  We also have some events for grown ups like a workshop from Parents Helping Parents, breastfeeding support at GUMBO and Postnatal for moms and babies at Bend & Bloom.  So scroll on down and check out the list and see the calendar for even more fun events!

Monday October 7th

Toddler Storyplay at BPL Central Library (Prospect Heights)
Mondays 1015a & 11am.  Play with toys and hear stories.  Ages 18-36m.  Space limited.  Pick up a ticket at the Children’s Reference Desk on the morning of the program.  Please call 718 230 2117 for more information.

Kids Community Class at Karma Kids Yoga Magical Studio (West Village)
Mondays 230-315p.  $10 cash drop in only, $5 for grownups that accompany children (2 year olds require an adult to participate).   This class includes all of the yoga fun, with an economy friendly price tag. Group poses are emphasized.  For 2-5 year olds.

Rolie Polie Guacamole Sing Along w/ Phranque! at LARK (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Mondays 415-515p.  Join us for some fun tunes for kids 0-100. $5 per family.

Tuesday October 8th

Bye Bye Baby Breakfast at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Tuesday October 8th 10a-12n.
Presented by Sean Meenan and My Brooklyn Baby.  Free Arts & Crafts and Raffle Prizes at Habana Outpost.
Sean Meenan, Habana Works, and My Brooklyn Baby will be saying, “Bye Bye Baby Breakfast” for the season with one final party for the kiddies! Bring the little ones out to enjoy our courtyard, which will be transformed into a toddler wonderland complete with toys, water table, and supervised art projects geared towards children 4yrs and under.

The morning will be packed full with fun activities to keep the little ones bright and cheery including Fall themed arts & crafts, story telling, glitter tattoos, and pop up raffle contests provided by Private Picassos, UrbanSitter and Bija Kids. Parents and kids will have full access to Habana Outpost’s menu along with the ability to sample free tasty snacks from Happy Family and Fruiggie. In addition, we will be celebrating My Brooklyn Baby’s 3 year birthday with free cupcakes and balloons at their store location.

Toddler Time at Brooklyn Public Library Windsor Terrace
Tuesdays 1030a.  Free.  Enjoy stories and play. 18 to 36 months.  No sessions on Oct 22, Oct 29.  Held in the Childrens’ Room.

Rocking Chair Music at Caribou Baby (Greenpoint/Williamsburg)
Every Tuesday.  The Early Show: 11:30 am – 12:15 pm.  The Late Show: 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm. $5.
Caribou Baby presents Rocking Chair Music, a weekly music event for kids and grown-ups alike. Inspired by the beautiful rocking chair in our family lounge, this event brings the spirit of spontaneous family sing-alongs to Caribou Baby’s sunny back room.

This event often sells out, so we strongly recommend purchasing tickets in advance online below or in the store. Tickets are not returnable or transferable within 1/2 hour of the show or anytime thereafter. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring kids in carriers as stroller parking is limited.  October 8th, Caitlin Rodgers

A Workshop:  Mornings, Can They Ever Go Well? @ Parents Helping Parents (Park Slope)

Postnatal Yoga (baby & parent) at Bend & Bloom Yoga (Park Slope)
Wednesdays 2:15pm-3:00pm.  Postnatal Yoga (baby & parent) with Lara Kohn Thompson.  $18 drop in.
Focus on restoring balance and health to your new life as a parent through a gentle yoga practice. Our postpartum class focuses on rebuilding core strength, toning back and pelvic muscle, and releasing tension in the shoulders and chest. Our community of new parents will share common concerns and challenges in this new chapter of life. After 60 minutes of postpartum yoga we will focus on bonding with our new babes through infant massage, stretching, and song. Open to all parents and caregivers and infants up to active crawling.

Next Meeting, Wed., Oct. 9, 2:30-4:30 p.m. $20. (Group generally meets every other week.) Call to let us know you are coming.
Successful breastfeeding is often dependent on the support of others.  Join our breastfeeding circle where you’ll gain that support and learn from the knowledge and experience of fellow nursing mothers.  As moms who have breastfed their own children, Mollie and Bethany know firsthand that while breastfeeding is a normal and natural relationship between mother and child, it can sometimes come with unexpected challenges.  Together we’ll explore these challenges as well as the joys of breastfeeding.

Learn to groove and move to rhythms from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America with Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora dance, followed by an upbeat and on-your-feet Zumba lesson with Dodge YMCA instructor Alma Bonilla.

Stories, Neighbors, Games and Songs with Tehilah at Kings Bay Y at North Williamsburg
Thursdays 11:30am – 12:15pm.  Ages Newborn – 4 yrs.  FREE and open to all.
Meet new friends, learn new Hebrew songs, sing, move, play and participate in a story.

Banjo Singalong at Two Moon Art House & Cafe (Park Slope/Gowanus)
Thursdays at 3p.  $5 plus one cafe item, all ages welcome!  Led by songwriter and performer Spencer Chandler, the weekly banjo singalong is a perfect place to sing some old songs, learn some new ones, and make friends in a warm, welcoming environment.

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
Now until October 31st The Garden is open year-round, Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
The Haunted Pumpkin Garden is Back and Spookier than Ever!

Experience the thrills and chills of the season with a garden full of intricately carved pumpkin sculptures, bugs, bats, parades, and more. New this year, the Haunted Pumpkin Garden features creepy creature encounters every weekend and the largest Spooky Nighttime Adventures trail ever! On October 19–20, watch master carver Ray Villafane of Food Network fame transform humongous pumpkins into unearthly creatures. It’s so much fun, it’s scary!

Pumpkin sculptures of spooky scarecrows, frightening spiders, sneaky snakes, and more await discovery at every turn in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. The display includes more than 500 intricately carved pumpkins that are sure to capture your youngster’s imagination. Every day kids can play inside a “gourd-geous” Pumpkin House, put on a scary show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, look for wiggly worms under a rotting log, and join a Halloween Parade, while every weekend offers even more treats.

Admission to the NYBG varies on the day of the week so see website for ticket prices.

Come join us for our FREE afternoon hours at the Museum, EVERY Thursday of the month! Free hours start at 3:00pm, and the Museum stays open until 5:00pm for all your fun exploring!

Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

Safely back at home during the Halloween season; Hansel and Gretel experience the most vivid dreams where Central Park and the Belvedere Castle serve as the backdrop for a magical explosion of music, dance and exciting encounters with a host of lovable characters. The brother and sister team once again embark on an adventure where beautiful mermaids, adorable monsters, swashbuckling pirates, charming vampires and a fabulous witch all intertwine for one unforgettable Halloween night in New York City.

M-F 1p-230p.  ArtsCetera temporary home for their drop in creative open play for ages 0-4y with a sing along about 30 minutes into the session. $10 per family

Tesla’s Wonderful World of Electricity at  New York Hall of Science (Queens)

Now until Sunday October 20th.  Free with NYSCI admission.  Admission:  Adults (ages 18 & older): $11  Children (ages 2 – 17): $8.  Explore the life and legacy of scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla through working models of his inventions, models of his laboratories and plants, photographic reproductions, and a narrative about Tesla’s life and work.

Preschool Play @ Wagner Park (Battery Park City)

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, now through Oct 30, 2013, 10am-12noon.  Free.
Join other toddlers, parents and caregivers for interactive play on a grassy lawn. Toys, books, and play equipment provided.  No sessions 10/14.   Location just north of Historic Battery Park, off Battery Place.

Free Storytime at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)

Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays at 11a for all ages.  Join The Scholastic Storyteller for readings of all-time favorite children’s books or new releases from Scholastic!  Perfect for babies and toddlers, these stories will spark imagination and fun in your budding bookworm.  Stroller Entrance: 130 Mercer Street.

Fall hours for Prospect Park Carousel in Prospect Park

Now until October 27th.  Thursday-Sunday & holidays: 12 – 5p.  $2.00 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets,  for all ages.  Located in the Park’s “Children’s Corner,” the Carousel features 53 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. Carved in 1912 by Charles Carmel, one of the foremost carousel designers of the time, and restored by the Prospect Park Alliance in 1990, the Carousel promises that classic summertime amusement will be available for generations of fun. In addition, the Prospect Park Carousel is one of the few in the world that is wheelchair accessible.  While at the Carousel grab an ice cream, popcorn or cold beverage from the Pony Express Snack Bar.

Toddler Storytime in Nolen Library @ The Metropolitan Museum of Art (UWS)

Mon-Fri 1030-11a.  Look, listen, and have fun with picture books in Nolen Library. For families with children ages 18 months–3 years. Free with Museum admission but storytime is limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Recommended admission: Adults $25, Seniors (65+) $17, children under 12 free (with adult).

Open Play at The Learning Garden (Prospect Heights)

M-F 11-6p. Daily Pass $12. (a variety of play passes also available see website fore more information).  Our popular Open Play program is a time that offers a social learning environment for your children (ages 0-4y) to grow and learn through creative play. With our space changing and growing every week, your little explorer will have lots to discover. Materials and activities are provided to engage you and your child while sparking their imagination.
