Happy Columbus Day! Happy long weekend! Another busy weekend and we get an extra day to have fun!
This week we have free finger knitting for kids at the 2nd Annual Fiber Festival, check out Wallace & Gromit at the BAMkids Movie Matinees or head over to Prospect Park for the Raptor Fest or check out the Pumpkin Day in McCarren Park! Also going on if you want to do some dancing is the Hip Tot Music Fest with Lloyd H Miller, Dance Family Get-together at BAX and for storytimes we have Brooklyn Beanstalks at the BPL Central Library!
Monday there is the fun free 2nd Annual For Greene Track & Field Day and the Columbus Day Parade! Also weekend events are running an extra day this weekend like Boo at the Zoo and the Amazing Maize Maze! So start planning your long weekend now and the calendar has a full listing off all our weekend drop in storytimes, sing-a-longs and even more events!
Remember some places may be closed on Monday (like all Brooklyn Libraries) so if check to see if the venues are open on Monday before you head out!

Every Saturday in October, Hugh McMahon will be out at our Front/Row lawn carving pumpkins as part of Fall/Fest. Demonstration Times: 2:30pm & 4:00pm. Hugh McMahon takes an ordinary piece of fruit and creates dynamic sculptures that enlightens any environment. He’s an original artist whose talent for carving pumpkins and watermelons has featured him in many restaurants, events, television, magazines, and books throughout the world.

Hip Tot Music Fest at ShapeShifter Lab (Gowanus)

Hip Tot Music Fest will kick off their season on October 13th, 2013 with Kindie rocker, Lloyd H. Miller. The concert will be the record release of his new highly anticipated solo album “S.S. Brooklyn.” Miller originally rose to fame as frontman for The Deedle Deedle Dees, who’ve won awards and national acclaim for their distinctive brand of historical rock for all ages. Also at Sunday’s show, author/illustrator Melanie Hope Greenberg will read her famous Brooklyn tale “Mermaids on Parade”. KidVentures NYC will be offering FREE crafts and face painting throughout the show!

From the imagination from those in the bowels of the Brooklyn Lyceum(aka Public Bath #7) comes an interactive reading of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Projections, actors, sound effects, and a deliciously malevolent set will accompany the reading, along with festive food and drink.
So, dress in your spookiest, and come down to enjoy what will be undoubtedly the scariest rendition of one of the greatest ghost stories ever told.

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden is Back and Spookier than Ever!
Experience the thrills and chills of the season with a garden full of intricately carved pumpkin sculptures, bugs, bats, parades, and more. New this year, the Haunted Pumpkin Garden features creepy creature encounters every weekend and the largest Spooky Nighttime Adventures trail ever! On October 19–20, watch master carver Ray Villafane of Food Network fame transform humongous pumpkins into unearthly creatures. It’s so much fun, it’s scary!
Pumpkin sculptures of spooky scarecrows, frightening spiders, sneaky snakes, and more await discovery at every turn in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. The display includes more than 500 intricately carved pumpkins that are sure to capture your youngster’s imagination. Every day kids can play inside a “gourd-geous” Pumpkin House, put on a scary show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, look for wiggly worms under a rotting log, and join a Halloween Parade, while every weekend offers even more treats.

Boo at the Zoo: Dragons and Dinosaurs at the Bronx Zoo
