Coney Island has been on a long road to recovery since Hurricane Sandy. One huge step in that direction is the opening of the long-anticipated Coney Island YMCA, a “44,000 square foot facility that features an aquatic center with a four-lane lap pool and family recreational pool, a full court gymnasium, fitness and multi-purpose rooms, and more, all overlooking the neighborhood’s historic boardwalk.” Yes, now you will have a place to work off your funnel cake and hot dogs. And, you can go to the beach this winter and enjoy a non-polar swim experience. Locals will have a convenient place to exercise, swim, and generally recreate. And the Y will, as always, highlight swim lessons for neighborhood kids, particularly key for children in a beach community. Visitors from further afield, rocking their citywide Y memberships, can enjoy another reason to check out this great neighborhood. Sometimes a long (read: warm) subway ride and a new iteration of Story, Song and Shimmy is the perfect activity on a winter morning.
