Another fun week is about to start and the good news is there are a lot of FREE events coming up. Which helps this time of year when we have gifts to purchase!
We have the Brooklyn Doodles toddler playgroup demo, a Preschool of Rock free demo at Gumbo, a Private Picasso’s art class demo at Twinkle Playspace and City Stomp is having music class demos in a variety of places in Brooklyn this week!
We also have quite a few free holiday events happening this week! We have the Holidays on the Hudson Lighting of the Ships and Boat Parade, the 11th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Madison Square Park in Manhattan. Also free and going on in the financial district is Frozen Feet Theater’s NYC Debut with Skating, Puppetry & Stories at Brookfield Place and the 15-Minute Christmas Carol at One Liberty Plaza! In Brooklyn we have a free Elf on the Shelf storytime at Barnes and Noble!
Some not free but not expensive and super fun events starting this week is A Charlie Brown Christmas at Brooklyn Lyceum and Big Annie at PS 3 The Bedford Village School!

Holidays on the Hudson Lighting of the Ships and Boat Parade (Midtown West)

For one night only, the Hudson River will be aglow with the festive parade of New York Cruise Line ships, lit with over
5,000 feet of holiday lights and led by a tug boat version of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer! Enjoy the festivities including live entertainment and photos with Santa before the lighting ceremony. Then, watch as the entire pier area and river is filled with light in a beautiful, holiday vision. Say “bon voyage” as the boats make their way from the pier down the Hudson, in NYC’s only holiday boat parade! Festivities begin 5p, lighting of the ships 545p & Bon Voyage to boat parade at 6p.

Shadow Box Theatre Presents: Big Annie at PS 3 The Bedford Village School (Bedford Stuyvesant)

Big Annie is a Creole flatboat captain and larger-than-life heroine. With her amazing strength, and the help of her animal friends, she pulls a boatload of toys through a terrible storm one Christmas Eve long ago. Three-dimensional puppets and the magic of our shadow screen create a captivating performance. The music in the show captures the sound of New Orleans jazz and the power of the American work song. With the work song “Heave Ho! Pull the boat, Big Annie,” the children will be enthusiastically singing along to help Big Annie weather the storm and get the toys to the children! The show opens with a joyous Holiday Sing-Along celebrating Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and Three Kings day.

Grand Central Terminal’s 14th annual Holiday Fair, sponsored by Shaw Floors, is the only holiday market in the city to operate indoors. This season, the Fair will fill Vanderbilt Hall with 76 vendors for six weeks each offering a wonderful array of holiday gifts for all your loved ones including art, clothing for adults and children, handbags, jewelry and accessories for men and women, bath and body items, home goods, collectible toys, holiday items and gifts for pets.
The Centennial Holiday Light Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)

The Holiday Light Show makes its return to Grand Central Terminal for its Centennial year. The show will light up the famous windows on the west side of the Main Concourse above Michael Jordan’s The Steak House N.Y.C. and Cipriani Dolci this holiday season.

Origami Holiday Tree 2013-2014 at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Now until January 12th. Grand Gallery, near the 77th Street exit on the Museum’s first floor.
An annual tradition, the delightfully decorated Origami Holiday Tree has marked the start of the holiday season at the Museum for 40 years. The theme of this year’s tree is Wicked, Wild, and Wonderful, honoring the Museum’s new exhibition The Power of Poison. Volunteers begin folding in July to complete hundreds of creations that will be displayed on the tree. During the holiday season, volunteers will be on hand to teach visitors of all ages the art of paper folding.
Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)

Marvel at homemade gingerbread houses that are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane, a 1.5 ton, 300-square-foot village made entirely of edible gingerbread, royal icing and candy, is a contender for the Guinness World Record for the largest gingerbread exhibit.
The village includes an estimated 1,900 lbs. of icing, 400 lbs. of candy, and 500 lbs. of gingerbread dough. It is comprised of 152 gingerbread houses, 65 trees, four gingerbread cable cars, five gingerbread train cars, an underground candy subway station, candy trees and sugar signage. A behind-the-scenes window gives a peek into the makings of GingerBread Lane with ovens, models and ingredients made entirely from royal icing. Five two-foot-high nutcrackers, also made of royal icing, stand guard over the exhibit. Free with NYSCI admission.
