Who doesn’t love a chance for some “me time” in the form of a relaxing treatment? Receiving a massage and spending the rest of the day feeling relaxed and peaceful fits my definition of a pretty darn good day. Lucky for me, I had this experience TWICE recently when I signed up for an acupuncture treatment and custom tailored massage at Slope Wellness.
While I define the treatments I had as “pampering”, the professionals at Slope Wellness consider them part of a holistic healthcare approach and an important part of a person’s overall health and well-being. To that end, Slope Wellness is not a spa but a health and wellness center delivering top quality care to those seeing holistic and natural healthcare.
Owner Jeff Weidmann has worked in the healthcare industry his entire career. He has been practicing acupuncture and Chinese medicine for over 13 years. When I met him for my acupuncture appointment, he asked me a series of health-related questions that would give him a better understanding of what kind of treatment I needed and how often I should return for repeat sessions.
We decided that he would target my upper back and shoulders to see if that would help relieve some stress and tension, and he would also use needles at other points (legs, hands and feet for me), which he explained was to help create a balance throughout my body systems. This was my first time receiving acupuncture and although I was initially a bit apprehensive, I decided to give it a try as it can treat such a wide variety of health concerns. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the whole experience relaxing and enjoyable. The acupuncture needles are so fine that I could barely feel them going in, and Jeff made sure to have a heat lamp strategically positioned on my upper back, which helped keep me feeling nice and cozy while I waited for the needles to do their thing. The treatment ended with a pretty solid back and neck massage, and I left feeling completely refreshed. (Note: They take most major insurances for acupuncture and offer discounted community acupuncture for those without coverage.)
A week later, I returned for a custom tailored massage with one of Slope Wellness’ licensed massage therapist. I’ve had many massages in my life and am a tough critic, so I was immensely pleased when the therapist delivered exactly what I was expecting. I will definitely return again in the near future, and may opt for a hot stone treatment, which sounds especially nice for the winter months.
Slope Wellness is located on the west side 8th Avenue, between 8th & 9th Streets. The space has a modern, sleek design and a warm and inviting atmosphere. I was surprised to learn that they offer pediatric acupuncture/acupressure (see an article we published recently about pediatric acupuncture), as well as Naturopathic medicine for children/families and infant and pediatric formulas of supplements and herbs.
As a part of their well-rounded approach to holistic care, they also offer mental health counseling with Meghan Hurley for adults, families and children, as well as a New Mother’s support group, which meets on Tuesdays from 12 – 1 p.m. In addition, they offer classes and workshops to complement their services and promote self-care, such as the MELT Method, Thai Yoga Bodywork, Detox programs and more. Visit their calendar of events for more info on these and other workshops.
