This weekend is packed with activities! There is the annual Icky Fest Weekend at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum with the Trummytones performing, Mil’s Trills 4th Annual Winter Bash and Dane Zanes House Party at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music! You can also head to the Brooklyn Historical Society for a free Handmade History event or go to the Brooklyn Beanstalk French & English Storytime at the Brooklyn Central Library.
Also this is the last weekend for the Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science and Sunday is House Giveaway Day! Also ending this weekend is the Asian American Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts and the Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden so be sure to get out and have some fun and don’t forget to check out the calendar for more events and also sing-a-longs, drop in yoga & art classes available this weekend!

Songs & stories from America’s Neighborhoods – a new program for kids ages 8m to 4 years. Shining Stars 8-16m, Little Red Birds 16-24m, The Jump Ups 24-36m, The Night Owls 3-4y. Semester starts Feb 4th. Grammy-winner Dan Zanes, whose music is a hit with kids and their families across the world, has partnered with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music to launch an innovative new music education program for kids. In Dan Zanes House Party: Songs and Stories from America’s Neighborhoods, children and their parents will sing, dance, listen, and learn to make music an integral part of their everyday lives while interacting with the music and stories of the diverse cultures that make up America’s neighborhoods.
Handmade History at Brooklyn Historical Society (Brooklyn Heights)

A Saturday art-making program for families. This January the theme is “My Community Paintings.” We will take a tour of the landscape paintings located in a second floor gallery at Brooklyn Historical Society. Then we return to the studio, and after a short discussion, families will create their own landscape painting based on their Brooklyn neighborhood. Please be prepared to take your projects home with you!
Brooklyn Beanstalk French & English Storytime at Brooklyn Public Central Library (Prospect Heights)

Volunteers from the Brooklyn Beanstalk Language Immersion School do an entertaining storytime program in French and Spanish. Space is limited. Tickets are handed out at the Children’s Desk beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Whitney Wees: Colors, Shapes & Lines at the Whitney Museum of Art (UES)
Sat Jan 11th & 25th 1030-1130a. $10 per family (free for Family Series members or Friend-level members and higher). Admission to program includes Museum admission. Registration is recommended; drop-ins are welcome if space is available.
For families with children 4-5y. Artists work in different ways. Roy Lichtenstein uses bold colors and a comic book aesthetic in his paintings while Ellsworth Kelly creates geometric abstractions using shape and line. To celebrate the diversity of New York City, Children’s Museum of the Arts presents their sixth annual series of Multicultural Festivals that celebrate the artistic and cultural traditions of different communities. Origami Holiday Tree 2013-2014 at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Now until January 12th. Grand Gallery, near the 77th Street exit on the Museum’s first floor.
An annual tradition, the delightfully decorated Origami Holiday Tree has marked the start of the holiday season at the Museum for 40 years. The theme of this year’s tree is Wicked, Wild, and Wonderful, honoring the Museum’s new exhibition The Power of Poison. Volunteers begin folding in July to complete hundreds of creations that will be displayed on the tree. During the holiday season, volunteers will be on hand to teach visitors of all ages the art of paper folding.
Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)

Marvel at homemade gingerbread houses that are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane, a 1.5 ton, 300-square-foot village made entirely of edible gingerbread, royal icing and candy, is a contender for the Guinness World Record for the largest gingerbread exhibit.
The village includes an estimated 1,900 lbs. of icing, 400 lbs. of candy, and 500 lbs. of gingerbread dough. It is comprised of 152 gingerbread houses, 65 trees, four gingerbread cable cars, five gingerbread train cars, an underground candy subway station, candy trees and sugar signage. A behind-the-scenes window gives a peek into the makings of GingerBread Lane with ovens, models and ingredients made entirely from royal icing. Five two-foot-high nutcrackers, also made of royal icing, stand guard over the exhibit. Free with NYSCI admission.
12th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 23rd. M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p. (Closed for Christmas and New Year’s Day) Extended holiday hours from November 18 to December 24: M–F: 8a–8p, Saturdays: 10a–8p, Sundays: 10a–7p.
Trains are trips. Trips are adventures. This year memorable characters from Maira Kalman’s Next Stop Grand Central will be watching our Lionel trains as they zip, zap and whizz through their journey from Grand Central to the North Pole!
