January is half over and Monday is Martin Luther King Day so NYC public schools are closed and we are looking forward to a long weekend!
If you are in town this weekend there are events celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Central Public Library and at the Kings Bay Y in Williamsburg!
Also happening this weekend is a Celebrate Red Hook at Fairyway Market, a new Puppet Works show called Cinderella or you can check out Still Awake Still! at The New Victory Theater, The Gift of Winter at Tada! Youth Theater and Bessies’s Big Shot at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park! For kiddie music we have Recess Monkey playing at Symphony Space and Miss Nina at Greenlight Bookstore for Baby Story Time!

The Berean Community Drumline, established in 2009, is a high energy youth program serving teens of the Crown Heights community. Collaborative Jungle with Tropical Birds at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (SoHo)

On the table tops we will create a small collaborative 3D jungle using mostly paper. We will look at images of tropical birds, draw them, make cut outs and add them to the jungle.

Enjoy a taste of Red Hook’s charming, unique, incredible neighborhood businesses at their best under a heated tent and on the water at Fairway Market (480 – 500 Van Brunt Street) from 11am – 3pm every Saturday and Sunday between January 18th and February 1st. Join Fairway and all their neighbors on Van Brunt Street with a celebration of the neighborhood’s heritage, food, and sights with local products and local vendors while a DJ will provide music. There will be giveaways, hand-outs, demos, a balloon artist, face painting and more for all those who attend. Fairway will feature jazz musicians such as The Jordan Young Trio performing January 19th from 12pm – 3pm.

It’s a bird … it’s a plane … no … it’s Bessie the cow! CPF’s original production, Bessie’s Big Shot, follows Bessie the cow’s dream of joining the circus. Can she lift more than Ziegfried, the strongest man in the world? Fly on a trapeze high above the crowd? Train Munson the Monkey? Get ready for Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium! The Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the National Football League have joined together to create an interactive experience at CMOM to celebrate this history-making event. Families will get a rare behind-the-scenes look at NFL officiating and the opportunity to train like an NFL Pro. Special daily and weekly programs and clinics—including NFL’s Play 60 obstacle course—will help families understand how developing better decision-making skills, including working together, planning, organizing and focusing on physical fitness leads to leadership and social success. NFL officials, executives, and current and former players will also stop by the museum through the exhibit’s run.

Getting kids to sleep can be rough and tough, but not for Miss Ivory Tinklefinger! With nothing but a great grand piano and her sweet singing voice, the famous Queen of Sleep can calm the rowdiest of children, that is, until treble ensues… Much to her dismay and to the audience’s delight, her piano produces more than just notes at this particular performance. Commissioned by the Sydney Opera House, STILL AWAKE STILL! is a marvelously madcap cabaret for kids that will have you encoring, not snoring!
