Weekday Events for January 27th-30th in NYC & Brooklyn!

Hi everyone,

All anyone can talk about is the weather and it looks like we are not getting out of winter anytime soon!

So the bad news is the cold days appear to be staying!  The good news is it is Take Your Child to the Library Week here in NYC!  The Brooklyn Public Library calendar is packed!  Lots of storytimes at a wide variety of branches like Crown Heights, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens and Windsor Terrace to just name a few.  So make sure to check out the Library event calendar for your local branch!  Also Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is no longer RIP!  It is back!  There are RIF events at Washington Irving, Dekalb, Borough Park, Cypress Hills, Central & Greenpoint branches.  You can earn free books for visiting the library!

A music discovery room for all ages encouraging children to experiment with a variety of musical instruments to create sound and rhythm.

New Mothers Support Group with Meghan Hurley, LMHC at Slope Wellness (Park Slope)
Tuesdays, 1:00pm – 2:00pm.  Drop-in $25 per session.
Motherhood is a time of change – bringing tremendous new joys and, also, some challenges. Take some time to give back to yourself and share your experiences with other new moms. Topics will include: healing your body and mind, adjusting to your new role as a parent, navigating evolving relationships with partners and friends, easing the challenges of working or staying at home, and mindfulness practices to reduce stress. Yoga With Toddler at Dou Yoga (Clinton Hill)
Tuesday 4-445p.  Family drop in $30.60 (or family 10 pack for $261 – 10 child + 10 adult).  This 45 minute class is appropriate for 2-4 years of age accompanied by a parent or caregiver.​
Get the wiggles and giggles out while also learning how to be calm and relaxed. Children and their parents or caregivers develop stronger bonds through practicing yoga together and engaging in imaginative play, creative exploration, cooperative games, songs, and stories. In this engaging and fun environment kids begin to develop body-awareness, coordination, strength, flexibility, self-control, and compassion. Adults reap the benefits of having space to move, play, and deeply relax.

Children ages 18 months to 5 years are invited to explore size, shape, level, speed, weight, and expression, through games, stories, improvisation, and creating dances together.

Super Bowl Boulevard on Broadway (midtown)
Wed Jan 29th-Sat Feb 1st 12n-10p.  Entry is free and all activities are free, however, the Toboggan is $5 and all proceeds will be donated to charity.  Registration required.  Register here.  You can pick up your badge with any one of our NFL Brand Ambassadors located on every corner of every block from 34th to 47th streets on Broadway.  For four exciting days, Super Bowl Boulevard Engineered by GMC is the biggest and brightest show on Broadway. Spanning thirteen blocks along one of the world’s most famous streets, the Boulevard is the epicenter for NFL fans during Super Bowl XLVIII celebrating all things football. Fans from all over the world and residents of the region will stop by to engage with the NFL, the New York/New Jersey Host Committee and the League’s broadcasting partners and sponsors.  See website for information on the attractions along the Boulevard.

Revelations: Chinese New Year Celebration at Kupferberg Center for the Arts (Flushing)
Wed, January 29, 2014 & Thu, January 30, 2014, 10:30 am.  Grades K to 8.  Ages 5 to 13.  Colden Auditorium at Kupferberg Center for the Arts
Tickets to all Revelations performances are $8.00 per seat. Celebrate the Lunar New Year at Kupferberg Center for the Arts with dancers, musicians, and acrobats from the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. This stunning program includes dances with golden lions and red dragons, colorful and vibrant fan and ribbon dances accompanied by traditional Chinese instruments, and beautiful contemporary dances with Chinese themes.

Thursdays 230-5p (also Tuesdays) Enjoy a beer while your little one plays at the Der Schwarze Kolner beergarden playgroup. $10 each session; $8 goes toward your consumption of food/drinks, $2 is tip for the staff.

Kids- RIF-Reading Is Fundamental at Brooklyn Public Central Library (Prospect Heights)
Thursdays 3-5p.  Free.
All RIF members must have a BPL library card to participate. Children will be allowed to choose a free RIF book when they join RIF and on their birthday.  Children can earn additional RIF books by borrowing and returning 6 library books.  A limit of 2 library books per week can be used towards this goal.

The Little Prince: A New York Story at The Morgan Library And Museum (Midtown East)

Readers throughout the world have embraced The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint–Exupéry’s tale of an interstellar traveler who comes to Earth in search of friendship and understanding. Saint–Exupéry wrote and illustrated the story in New York during World War II and it was first published here, in English and French. This exhibition of the original manuscript and watercolor drawings—the most comprehensive ever mounted—explores the American origins of a story that reminds us that what matters most can only be seen with the heart.

Free Storytime at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)
Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays at 11a for all ages.  Join The Scholastic Storyteller for readings of all-time favorite children’s books or new releases from Scholastic!  Perfect for babies and toddlers, these stories will spark imagination and fun in your budding bookworm.  Stroller Entrance: 130 Mercer Street.

12th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 23rd.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  (Closed for Christmas and New Year’s Day)
Trains are trips. Trips are adventures. This year memorable characters from Maira Kalman’s Next Stop Grand Central will be watching our Lionel trains as they zip, zap and whizz through their journey from Grand Central to the North Pole!

You Make the Call: Learn to be a NFL Official at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Until February 28th.  Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 7pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm.  All ages. Included museum admission.
Get ready for Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium! The Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the National Football League have joined together to create an interactive experience at CMOM to celebrate this history-making event. Families will get a rare behind-the-scenes look at NFL officiating and the opportunity to train like an NFL Pro. Special daily and weekly programs and clinics—including NFL’s Play 60 obstacle course—will help families understand how developing better decision-making skills, including working together, planning, organizing and focusing on physical fitness leads to leadership and social success. NFL officials, executives, and current and former players will also stop by the museum through the exhibit’s run.

Bessies’s Big Shot at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

Based on the famed PuppetMobile show of the same name, this popular production makes its Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre debut!  Directed by Bruce Cannon and co-written by Douglas Strich, Alexander Bartenieff and Bruce Cannon, this version of the beloved show will feature several new puppets in addition to new and extended scenes.  It’s a bird … it’s a plane … no … it’s Bessie the cow!  CPF’s original production, Bessie’s Big Shot, follows Bessie the cow’s dream of joining the circus.  Can she lift more than Ziegfried, the strongest man in the world? Fly on a trapeze high above the crowd? Train Munson the Monkey?  This variety show cheers Bessie on as she attempts the impossible and searches for her special talents.

Our popular Open Play program is a time that offers a social learning environment for your children (ages 0-4) to grow and learn through creative play. With our space changing and growing every week, your little explorer will have lots to discover. Materials and activities are provided to engage you and your child while sparking their imagination.

Sing Along & Open Play at Creative Arts Studio (Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill)
Monday-Thursday 1-230p.  Drop-In Parent/caregiver supervised with an ArtsCetera staffer on hand. $10 per session.
Experts say our children are not getting enough unstructured play time, which they report is essential for healthy development.  Here’s a great way to add more free play time to your child’s lif in a safe, welcoming environment. Some sessions include a short Sing Along segment to add to the fun. Creative play for all ages from infants up to 5 years. Toys, coloring, lego table, puzzles, reading corner.
