Happy Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day & Super Bowl Sunday!  Very to excited see the end of January!

There is so much going on with all the holiday events happening this weekend!  You can start the weekend by trying out Babies Love Music at the Brooklyn Music School or go see P for Puppets One, Two, Tres! at Gumbo.  Also happening this weekend is Gallop into the New Year with Museum of Chinese in America, 3,2,1 Happy Chinese New Year at Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Shine a Light on Chinese New Year:  Chinese Horse Puppet at Children’s Museum of Manhattan, 15th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade and Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights Groundhog Day Concert at The JCC in Manhattan.

There are also some ongoing events starting up like Sleeping Beauty Dreams at BAM and The Frog Prince at Galli Theater!  That is only some of the events happening so be sure to check out the calendar for more weekend events as well as sing-a-longs, drop in yoga & open play happening this weekend!

P for Puppets Present: One, Two, Tres! at Gumbo (Boerum Hill)
Friday, Jan. 31, 4:00 p.m.  $15, adults & siblings $5 ea.  Space is limited, please call to reserve: 718-855-7808.  One, Two, Tres!’ is a bilingual (Spanish/ English) puppet show created for babies and children, up to 4 years old. Children become immersed in a magical world of puppetry, which focuses on visual, auditory and verbal stimuli and provides a wonderful bonding experience between parents and children. Each act has repetitive actions and simple musical rhythms, which babies can focus on and enjoy, and toddlers will be totally entertained in a creative, stimulating environment.

Saturday February 1st

Celebrating Red Hook at at Fairway Market
Saturday February 1st 11a-3p.  Free.
Enjoy a taste of Red Hook’s charming, unique, incredible neighborhood businesses at their best under a heated tent and on the water at Fairway Market (480 – 500 Van Brunt Street).  Join Fairway and all their neighbors on Van Brunt Street with a celebration of the neighborhood’s heritage, food, and sights with local products and local vendors while a DJ will provide music. There will be giveaways, hand-outs, demos, a balloon artist, face painting and more for all those who attend.

FAMILY FESTIVAL: Gallop into the New Year with Museum of Chinese in America
Sat, Feb 1, 2014 from 11am – 4pm.  Tickets: $10 per person. Free for MOCA Members, children under 2, and Cool Culture families. Stroller parking limited. Email education@mocanyc.org for advance reservations.

Ma-Yi Puppet Workshop at the Ellen Stewart Theatre Lobby (East Village)
February 1, 2014 at 11am.  Fun for the whole family! (ages 4 – 104!)  Tickets: $5 per kid for workshop.  Workshops last 45 minutes and are limited to 25 children.  How would YOU bring the magic of space to life on stage? WONG KIDS puppet designer David Parkinson Valentine leads La MaMa KIDS in a “Magic of Puppetry” workshop on February 1st. Travel into the far galaxies of THE WONG KIDS, and paint your own planet puppet! Then transform the La MaMa stage into a whole solar system through the magic of theatre.

Josh and the Jamtones at Symphony Space (UWS)

Boston-based Josh and the Jamtones are an interactive dance party kids band, geared towards kids and parents of all ages. Their sound is a musical mash-up of artists/bands like Bob Marley, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Jack Johnson, all seamlessly blended into a Muppet-friendly musical cocktail.  Expect loads of fun, rock and roll with a ska beat, and the energy level of a run-away locomotive.

Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights Groundhog Day Concert at The JCC in Manhattan (UWS)
Sun Feb 2nd 10a.  Tickets: $18
Joanie Leeds is an award-winning singer/songwriter leading the kindie rock band, Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights. Returning for their annual concert at the JCC, they will have families dancing as they swerve from rock to soul, pop to country and folk.

Little Laffs at the Jalopy Theatre (Carroll Gardens/Red Hook)

Little Laffs, “Big Fun for Little Ones” is a fun and entertaining variety show for kids ages 3-9, that mixes juggling, balloon art, music, comedy, and more. 15th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade
Sun Feb 2nd 1p.  Free.
Parade Location: Starts at Little Italy and goes through the main streets of Lower Chinatown/Manhattan and there is also a Cultural Festival & Booth: at Sara Roosevelt Park (Canal & Forsyth St.) The event features elaborate floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dances galore, Asian musicians, magicians, acrobats and procession by local organizations..

All Weekend
Sleeping Beauty Dreams at BAM Fisher (Fort Greene)
Sat Feb 1st, Sun Feb 2nd & Sat Feb 8th 11a & 3p.  All tickets $12.  Run time 1 hour plus post show Q&A.  See website for schedule.
Soaring and tumbling through gorgeous video landscapes, a young girl seeks her true self—and her true love. This funny, contemporary adaptation of the classic fairy tale was written by award-winning playwright Amaranta Leyva, and is performed by Mexican puppet company Marionetas de la Esquina in both English and Spanish versions.   Feb 1 at 3pm performance is in Spanish.

Super Bowl Boulevard on Broadway (midtown)
Fri Jan 31st-Sat Feb 1st 12n-10p.  Entry is free and all activities are free, however, the Toboggan is $5 and all proceeds will be donated to charity.  Registration required.  Register here.  You can pick up your badge with any one of our NFL Brand Ambassadors located on every corner of every block from 34th to 47th streets on Broadway.  For four exciting days, Super Bowl Boulevard Engineered by GMC is the biggest and brightest show on Broadway. Spanning thirteen blocks along one of the world’s most famous streets, the Boulevard is the epicenter for NFL fans during Super Bowl XLVIII celebrating all things football. Fans from all over the world and residents of the region will stop by to engage with the NFL, the New York/New Jersey Host Committee and the League’s broadcasting partners and sponsors.  See website for information on the attractions along the Boulevard.

Explore the Chinese Zodiac and calendar in celebration of the year of the Horse.  Creat a movalbe horse puppet and learn the Chinese character for “horse”

Sat & Sun 2p Feb 1st-23rd.  For ages 3+.  Tickets: Adults & Children (2-17 years) $20.
A princess learns to look beyond appearances when the man of her dreams turns out to be… a frog! Will she pucker up to the slimy toad, or let love hop away?

Sat Feb 1st:  Do It Yourself!  A Glow-in-the-Dark Clubhouse for 9- to 14-Year-Olds!  Bring your friends (and banish your parents) for a day of glowing fun. Create your own luminescent bow tie and learn how to tie it. Ingrid Alvarez teaches neon nerd dance moves to prepare for our Glow-in-the-Dark Discotheque, featuring tunes on Northern Lights Radio. Don’t miss Eric Girardi’s Glow Show, featuring juggling, yo-yo antics, and magical mayhem.
Sun Feb 2nd:  Old-Time Brooklyn!  A Clubhouse for Folks 55 and Upward!  Chair yoga expert Sarah Meredith kicks off the day with a class designed for arthritis relief. Be enchanted by storytellers from Pearls of Wisdom and enjoy BBG’s grounds with a bird stroll and tour. Join us for a special screening of the classic 1953 film Little Fugitive, following by a discussion with Mary Engel (daughter of the filmmakers). Cap off the day at our Egg Cream After Party.

Moon Science at 130p for 4 and up.  Come celebrate Lunar New Year by making a flip book of the moon cycle! Then play with some moon sand and take home a recipe to make your own!  3, 2, 1… Happy Chinese New Year! at 1130a & 230p on Fri, Sat & Sun, for 5 and under.  Celebrate Chinese New Year and the year of the Horse with the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. The Little Prince: A New York Story at The Morgan Library And Museum (Midtown East)

Readers throughout the world have embraced The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint–Exupéry’s tale of an interstellar traveler who comes to Earth in search of friendship and understanding. Saint–Exupéry wrote and illustrated the story in New York during World War II and it was first published here, in English and French. This exhibition of the original manuscript and watercolor drawings—the most comprehensive ever mounted—explores the American origins of a story that reminds us that what matters most can only be seen with the heart.

Angelina Ballerina The Musical at Vital Theatre Company (UWS)
Sat & Sun February 1st – April 27th 11a & 330p.  General tickets $39.50 & premium $59.50.  Performances run 1 hour and are appropriate for children between 2 and 10 years old.  In ANGELINA BALLERINA THE MUSICAL, Angelina and her friends, Alice, Gracie, AZ, Viki, and even their teacher, Ms. Mimi, are all aflutter because a special guest is coming to visit Camembert Academy! Angelina and her friends will perform all types of dance, including hip-hop, modern dance, the Irish jig and of course, ballet, and they are excited to show off their skills to their famous visitor. Angelina is the most excited of all, but will she get the starring moment she hopes for? Based on the CG-animated series, Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps on PBS KIDS®, ANGELINA BALLERINA THE MUSICAL is a family-friendly show that will have the entire audience dancing in the aisles.

Bessies’s Big Shot at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

Based on the famed PuppetMobile show of the same name, this popular production makes its Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre debut!  Directed by Bruce Cannon and co-written by Douglas Strich, Alexander Bartenieff and Bruce Cannon, this version of the beloved show will feature several new puppets in addition to new and extended scenes.  It’s a bird … it’s a plane … no … it’s Bessie the cow!  CPF’s original production, Bessie’s Big Shot, follows Bessie the cow’s dream of joining the circus.  Can she lift more than Ziegfried, the strongest man in the world? Fly on a trapeze high above the crowd? Train Munson the Monkey?  This variety show cheers Bessie on as she attempts the impossible and searches for her special talents.

You Make the Call: Learn to be an NFL Official at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Now until February 28th.  Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 7pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm.  All ages. Included museum admission.
Get ready for Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium! The Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the National Football League have joined together to create an interactive experience at CMOM to celebrate this history-making event. Families will get a rare behind-the-scenes look at NFL officiating and the opportunity to train like an NFL Pro. Special daily and weekly programs and clinics—including NFL’s Play 60 obstacle course—will help families understand how developing better decision-making skills, including working together, planning, organizing and focusing on physical fitness leads to leadership and social success. NFL officials, executives, and current and former players will also stop by the museum through the exhibit’s run.

Mysteries of the Unseen World at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Now until Monday, June 30, 2014.  Free with Admission: Adults: $27 & children (2-12y): $16.  Member tickets are $13.50 adults; $8.50 children. Free for Voyager-level Members and above.  Mysteries of the Unseen World will transport audiences to places on this planet that they have never been before, to see things that are beyond their normal vision, yet literally right in front of their eyes.  Mysteries of the Unseen World will be shown in 3D digital and 2D film. 12th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 23rd.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  (Closed for Christmas and New Year’s Day) Extended holiday hours from November 18 to December 24: M–F: 8a–8p, Saturdays: 10a–8p, Sundays: 10a–7p.
Trains are trips. Trips are adventures. This year memorable characters from Maira Kalman’s Next Stop Grand Central will be watching our Lionel trains as they zip, zap and whizz through their journey from Grand Central to the North Pole!
