Happy President’s Day weekend! My kids are so excited to have a week off from school and it will be a fun week! So much going on during midwinter break!
The good news is that a lot of the events are going on ALL week! The NY Transit Museum has Hands on Transit and the Great Subway Search, Brooklyn Botanic Garden has Discovery Week. It is Engineering Week at New York Hall of Science and Engineer Some Fun at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum! There are activities all week in Prospect Park or you can go see Cinderella at Puppetworks or Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds at the New Victory Theater. Also happening is Kids Week at the Intrepid, a Culinary Kids Food Festival at the NY Botanical Garden and Presidents in Residence at Dimenna Children’s History Museum!

The History of Chocolate with American Heritage Chocolate® at Dimenna Children’s History Museum (UWS)
Mon, February 17th, 2014 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Tickets are free with museum admission, are very limited, and are available on a first come, first serve basis. Chocolate was not always sold as a candy bar! See, smell, and taste colonial hot chocolate—watch as American Heritage Chocolate educators grinds cocoa beans, add spices like red pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon, and heat up hot chocolate to taste. Don’t forget to get your own to bring home! Taste of Chocolate Workshop: 12:30, 1, 1:30, 2, 2:30, 3, 3:30 pm. Be surprised by the variety of tastes that go into making chocolate! Get up close and personal with all the ingredients—ones that are still used today by Mars chocolate! Learn about each step of the chocolate making process and taste each ingredient—ground cocoa paste, cocoa butter and more. At the end participants will taste test a chocolate square. Participants will sign up for time slots on site at the American Heritage Chocolate demonstration table.

The Fort Greene chapter of La Leche League is starting a toddler meeting! Mothers and their young children are welcome to join us for mother-to-mother support as we discuss topics related to breastfeeding during toddlerhood and beyond. Rotating topics will include advantages of breastfeeding past infancy; family dynamics and the breastfed toddler; avoiding difficulties/ conscious parenting; and nutrition, solids, and weaning. Future toddler meetings will be held the third Wednesday of every other month. We look forward to building a community of breastfeeding mothers and toddlers in our neighborhood!

Engineering Week kicks off with Engineering Day on Monday, February 17, with a day of activities and tables run by the American Society of Civil Engineers. This year, NYSCI is extending Engineering Day to Engineering Week. Each day covers different engineering concepts—from nano to mechanical, accompanied by activities and challenges to put those ideas into practice.

As part of the Garden’s Edible Academy initiative, join us for a family-friendly, weeklong food festival celebrating the relationships among plants, farms, and your favorite foods. Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden staff and the culinary team, Growing Chefs, will be on hand offering cooking demonstrations, recipes, and hands-on activities, with plenty of music and tastings to add to the fun. Screening episodes featuring notable guest appearances by Carol Burnett, Steve Martin, and Rita Moreno. The Muppet Show was the most widely watched television show around the world in the late 1970s. Every week, special guest performers joined Muppet regulars including Miss Piggy, Kermit, Rowlf, and Fozzie. These three episodes feature guest stars currently being honored for their lifetime achievments: Rita Moreno, winner of the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Grammy-Oscar-Emmy-Tony winner, earned her first Emmy for her appearance on the series’ debut broadcastin 1976. Steve Martin, who recently received an Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, brought his act to Episode 208,, 1977. Finally, Carol Burnett, the 2013 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor danced her way through Episode 515, 1980), a dance marathon episode which won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing.

Get ready for Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium! The Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the National Football League have joined together to create an interactive experience at CMOM to celebrate this history-making event. Families will get a rare behind-the-scenes look at NFL officiating and the opportunity to train like an NFL Pro. Special daily and weekly programs and clinics—including NFL’s Play 60 obstacle course—will help families understand how developing better decision-making skills, including working together, planning, organizing and focusing on physical fitness leads to leadership and social success. NFL officials, executives, and current and former players will also stop by the museum through the exhibit’s run.
