Weekday Events for March 10th-13th in Brooklyn & NYC!

Well we have moved our clocks forward last night so we are tired but the evenings will be longer which will be so nice!  Tuesday is a half day for NYC public schools so I think the children and I will check out the snowdrops that are blooming at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  Free admission on Tuesdays!

For parents and caregivers there are workshops going on this week like Handling Your Child’s Anger, Frustration or Fears at Parents Helping Parents, A Moving Child is a Learning Child Workshop for babies and their parents/caregivers at the Brooklyn Public Central Library and also the Babywearing International of NYC Support Group at Caribou Baby!

For the children we have Lego/Duplo Time for Little Ones at the Leonard Brooklyn Public Library, free trial Preschool of Rock class at Color BKLYN and Drum-a-Long with Ivan at Play Kids going on this week!  Also The Stomping Ground has a great schedule of classes starting up like a Yellow Sneaker Puppet Sing-Along and I have been busy adding all the classes to our calendar so check it out for all the events and drop ins going on this week in Brooklyn & NYC!  Please remember to check with the venue to see if there are any cancellations or schedule changes before you head out the door!  If you know of an event you can submit it to our calendar via this link.  Also  A Child Grows is on Facebook so like us for last minute events and news!

Community Sing-along! at Lenox Hill Senior Center (UES)
March 10th at 1pm.  Free.
Each month our wonderful teacher Shoshana from Eastside Westside Music Together leads seniors and families in a fun-filled, musical experience, singing, dancing, and playing together in a unique setting that brings together kids from 0-99.  Enter on 70th Street.

Lego Duplo Time for Little Ones at Brooklyn Public Leonard Library (Williamsburg)

Come use your imagination building and assembling with others!

Handling Your Child’s Anger, Frustration or Fears at Parents Helping Parents (Park Slope)

No Registration Required.  Drum-a-Long with Ivan at Play Kids.  For kids 3m-4y.

Book Adventures at Brooklyn Public Library Carroll Gardens
Tuesdays 4-445p.  For ages 5y to 12y.  Free.
Transport yourself to different worlds with books and factual insights. Program is a Read Aloud followed by a craft or an activity. Parents: this is a great program that helps support the current core curriculum.

Wednesday March 12th

Babywearing International of NYC Support Group at Caribou Baby (Williamsburg/Greenpoint)
Wed March 12th 1015a-12n.  Free – no sign up, just drop in.
Hosted by Babywearing International of NYC, this support group is designed for parents with children of any age who either love babywearing or are interested in learning more. This group is lead by Sarah Longwell-Stevens, a certified babywearing educator, along with Jenna Morvay. They are dedicated to sharing the love of babywearing in NYC while broadening our babywearing skills and knowledge together. Ask questions, share, and chat away about babywearing! Experience of all levels and different carrier styles welcome and encouraged.

A Moving Child is a Learning Child Workshop at Brooklyn Central Public Library (Prospect Heights)
Wed March 12th 1030a-1130a for babies 12 months & younger and their parents/caregivers.  Free.  In the Dweck Lobby.
Love to move? Then move to learn! Join us for a playful, participatory workshop for young children and their parents or caregivers with Gill Connell, author of A Moving Child Is a Learning Child. Gill is a globally-recognized expert in the field of early childhood movement and play and the critical role it plays in preparing young children for learning. Learn how you can create a well-balanced daily diet of movement and play for your child. This is a participatory parent/caregiver workshop with Q & A to follow.

StoryTime comes alive with puppets, songs, and yoga poses. Suggested for kids up to age 6.

Thursday March 13th

Preschool of Rock Trial Classes at Color BKLYN (Prospect Heights)
Thu March 13 10-1045a.  Free.
Preschool of Rock classes will be held every Thursday for 45 minutes. This is a great baby music class and toddler music class so come try it out – great for siblings too! Come and rock out with your little rocker! Making music together is the best activity you could do for your child. Preschool of Rock brings you great entertainment in education.

Yellow Sneaker Puppet Sing-Alongs at The Stomping Ground (Crown Heights)
Thursdays at 10a.  $7 Stomping Ground Members/$10 Non-Members.
A Yellow Sneaker Sing-Along is a 45 minute interactive singalong with puppets and guitar, combining original songs, oldies, and traditional children’s music. Sing, clap, dance, and shake your sillies out! Geared towards kids age 0-5 and their families​.

Brooklyn Doodles Drop in Art Class at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Thursday, March 13th 4-5pm. Age 3.5-5.5 yrs. Drop in fee $20.
Brooklyn Doodles invites you to drop in for an afternoon of art at the Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe. The class promises to be lots of fun and educational especially for the preschool and kindergarten set! Mon-Sat 1030a-1230p.  $15 drop in fee per visit (no registration fee needed),  Play packs also available for purchase.
Drop In for Open Play and enjoy up to 2 hours of fun, exercise & friends with a parent or caregiver. Use our 2,800 sq. ft facility to explore, discover and help increase your child’s awareness with positive play habits and a fun social environment.  Everyone must wear socks.

Extreme Action Company Rehearsal at STREB (Williamsburg)
March 11th – 14th Tuesday – Friday 11:30am to 3:30pm.  Free and open to the public.

Drop In Play at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)

Ice Skating at LeFrak Center at Lakeside (Prospect Park)
Now until Sunday March 23rd.  Monday–Thursday 11a–6p, Friday & Saturday 9a–10p, Sunday 9a–8p.
Skating Rink Admission: $6/person weekdays, Skate Rental: $5  Entry to the LeFrak Center is free and open to the public.  Lakeside is the largest and most ambitious project in Prospect Park since the Park’s completion nearly 150 years ago.  The LeFrak Center at Lakeside provides the public with:  A skating pavilion with two rinks providing 32,000 square feet for seasonal ice skating, roller skating, and water play, 15,000 square feet of beautifully landscaped viewing terraces, year-round café with a seating area, public restrooms, public programs, seasonal sports, classes, and event space.  Free ice skating for children 12 and under excluding holidays on Mondays 3-6p.
The Little Prince: A New York Story at The Morgan Library And Museum (Midtown East)

Readers throughout the world have embraced The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint–Exupéry’s tale of an interstellar traveler who comes to Earth in search of friendship and understanding. Saint–Exupéry wrote and illustrated the story in New York during World War II and it was first published here, in English and French. This exhibition of the original manuscript and watercolor drawings—the most comprehensive ever mounted—explores the American origins of a story that reminds us that what matters most can only be seen with the heart.

You Make the Call: Learn to be an NFL Official at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Now until March 23rd.  Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 7pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm.  All ages. Included museum admission.
Get ready for Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium! The Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the National Football League have joined together to create an interactive experience at CMOM to celebrate this history-making event. Families will get a rare behind-the-scenes look at NFL officiating and the opportunity to train like an NFL Pro. Special daily and weekly programs and clinics—including NFL’s Play 60 obstacle course—will help families understand how developing better decision-making skills, including working together, planning, organizing and focusing on physical fitness leads to leadership and social success. NFL officials, executives, and current and former players will also stop by the museum through the exhibit’s run.

A mosaic of classic and exotic orchids greets visitors in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory—a living design inspiration taking its cues from a modernist Key West estate garden. Free Storytime at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)
Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays at 11a for all ages.  Join The Scholastic Storyteller for readings of all-time favorite children’s books or new releases from Scholastic!  Perfect for babies and toddlers, these stories will spark imagination and fun in your budding bookworm.  Stroller Entrance: 130 Mercer Street.

Bessies’s Big Shot at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

Based on the famed PuppetMobile show of the same name, this popular production makes its Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre debut!  Directed by Bruce Cannon and co-written by Douglas Strich, Alexander Bartenieff and Bruce Cannon, this version of the beloved show will feature several new puppets in addition to new and extended scenes.  It’s a bird … it’s a plane … no … it’s Bessie the cow!  CPF’s original production, Bessie’s Big Shot, follows Bessie the cow’s dream of joining the circus.  Can she lift more than Ziegfried, the strongest man in the world? Fly on a trapeze high above the crowd? Train Munson the Monkey?  This variety show cheers Bessie on as she attempts the impossible and searches for her special talents.

Our popular Open Play program is a time that offers a social learning environment for your children (ages 0-4) to grow and learn through creative play. With our space changing and growing every week, your little explorer will have lots to discover. Materials and activities are provided to engage you and your child while sparking their imagination.

Sing Along & Open Play at Creative Arts Studio (Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill)
Monday-Thursday 1-230p.  Drop-In Parent/caregiver supervised with an ArtsCetera staffer on hand. $10 per session.
Experts say our children are not getting enough unstructured play time, which they report is essential for healthy development.  Here’s a great way to add more free play time to your child’s lif in a safe, welcoming environment. Some sessions include a short Sing Along segment to add to the fun. Creative play for all ages from infants up to 5 years. Toys, coloring, lego table, puzzles, reading corner.
