Weekday Events for March 24th-27th in Brooklyn & NYC!

March weather is crazy!  Nice one day and not nice the next day!  I am going stay in denial and not check the the weather for later this week.

So turns out ice skating got extended a week at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park so NOW this is the last week (and free on Mondays for children under 12) so head out and get your ice skating done!  Also happening this week is a free trial class of Rolie Polie Guacamole at Gumbo, Language in Motion Free Spanish Demo for Kids and Free Demo Week at Juguemos a Cantar South Slope & North Slope locations.

Also this week we have Storytime Yoga at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe, City Stomp Live at Dizzy’s on Fifth, Gateway Storytime in the Discovery Room at the American Museum of Natural History and very very excited that the Prospect Park Carousel is opening this week!

Monday March 24th

Gateway Storytime in the Discovery Room at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Monday March 24th 1015a & 1115a.  Programs do not run on public school holidays.  Age: 2 1/2 – 5y.  Free with Museum admission. Free passes for the 10:15 and 11:15 Gateway Storytime sessions are available the day of the program at the Discovery Room entrance on a first come, first served basis.  The Discovery Room invites preschoolers and their parents or caregivers to explore! Each week highlights a topic in natural science or a cultural theme. There is a period of free play followed by a story, song, and visit to a related Museum hall.

Free Kid Ice Skating at LeFrak Center at Lakeside (Prospect Park)
Mondays March 24th 3-530p.  LAST ONE!  Rink closing March 30th!  Free Admission (for children 12 and under): Mondays 3 – 530p (closing early on the 24th for an event) Skating Rink Admission: $6/person weekdays, Skate Rental: $5  Entry to the LeFrak Center is free and open to the public.  Lakeside is the largest and most ambitious project in Prospect Park since the Park’s completion nearly 150 years ago.  The LeFrak Center at Lakeside provides the public with:  A skating pavilion with two rinks providing 32,000 square feet for seasonal ice skating, roller skating, and water play, 15,000 square feet of beautifully landscaped viewing terraces, year-round café with a seating area, public restrooms, public programs, seasonal sports, classes, and event space.

Spellbound Storytime at Crespella Cafe (South Slope)
Mondays 4p.  $5/drop in.  For 0-5y.
Drop-in weekly storytimes with music, stories, puppets and more.  We blend songs, our favorite books and fables, and classic nursery rhymes with a special twist into an interactive and stimulating storytime specially crafted for babies and toddlers.

Tuesday March 25th

Mommy and Me Crafty Kid Class! at Babies “R” Us (Union Square)
Tuesdays 10a.   $35 per Mom and Child! Ages 2-5 years old.
A fun, safe, and unique Mommy and Me Craft Class! We will use all different mediums and make amazing crafts ! Our teachers will engage both mom and little one to make it fun for both! Paint, sculpt, craft, glue, and fun all rolled in one! We will make everything form Spring Mini Herb Gardens to Summer Silhouette Portraits!

Storytime Yoga at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Tuesdays 1030a.  $5.
We are happy to have all ages in the class. Those who are mobile can move on their own and those who are not can listen and move with the adult who brings them. There will be some reading, moving, singing and bubbles.

Pirate Yoga! at Karma Kids (West Village)
Tue March 25th 430-530p.  For ages 3-6y.  $40 per child.  Call to reserve your space.
Avast ye landlubbers! Climb aboard our yoga pirate ship as we set sail on the high seas in search of secret treasure!  We’ll learn how to talk like pirates, dress like pirates, and do some pirate training to get our bodies in tip top shape. We’ll be sure to meet some of our pirately animal friends along the way! But we’ll have to be clever, mateys, if we want to get the treasure before all the other pirates do!  This will be a pirate adventure that you’ll never forget! ARRG!!

Wednesday March 26th

Preschool Story Time at Bushwick Brooklyn Public Library
Wednesdays 1130a-1230p.  Free.
Listen to songs and hear stories. If you have a group and wish to attend this program, please call the Bushwick Library at 718-602-1348.

Japanese Play Date at The Stomping Ground (Crown Heights)
Wednesdays 1130a-1230p.  $5.
This weekly play date is open to all families, including those who speak Japanese as their first language. Host Yoko Gilman will begin each group with circle time, including a story or song presented in Japanese.

City Stomp Live at Dizzy’s on Fifth (Park Slope)
Wednesday Mar 26th.  First seating at 5:00 (show at 5:45), second seating at 6:30 (show at 6:45).  City Stomp Live has shows at Dizzy’s Fifth Avenue. Called the Best Place to Rock Out While Having Dinner by Time Out New York Kids, shows are free with a dinner reservation. Reservations required, call Dizzy’s Fifth Avenue at (718) 230-5551.

Language in Motion Free Spanish Demo for Kids (Williamsburg)
Thursday 1015a-11a.  Free.  For kids 0-3 years old and their adults
Meaningful movement, visual support, and songs help contextualize language content for child and caregiver.  This unique workshop is designed for caretakers and children to learn simultaneously.  Join us for a fun and interactive learning experience in a supportive and caring environment.

Rock and Roll…Sing and Dance…with local creative children’s band, Rolie Polie Guacamole.  The latest hit on the Brooklyn children’s band scene, Andrew Tuzhilin of Rolie Polie will engage you and your children with songs from the newly release CD ‘Time for Hummus’ along with all-time familiar favorites, including books like “Brown Bear.” Come shake those shakers and swing those hips!

Opening of the Carousel (Prospect Park)
Thu March 27th 12n-5p.  $2 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets.
Kick off spring with a ride on the Park’s beautiful 102 year-old carousel.  Located in the Park’s “Children’s Corner,” the Carousel features 51 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. Carved in 1912 by Charles Carmel, one of the foremost carousel designers of the time, and restored by the Prospect Park Alliance in 1990, the Carousel promises that classic summertime amusement will be available for generations of fun. In addition, the Prospect Park Carousel is one of the few in the world that is wheelchair accessible.

Drop In for Open Play and enjoy up to 2 hours of fun, exercise & friends with a parent or caregiver. Use our 2,800 sq. ft facility to explore, discover and help increase your child’s awareness with positive play habits and a fun social environment.  Everyone must wear socks.

Drop in Play & Enrichment at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
M-F 930a-1p.  $12/family.  For children ages 0-4 with an adult.
Our beautiful space will be open with art materials, blocks, books, dough, bubbles and more.  Daily enrichment classes including yoga, music, art and dance at 1030a included.  No registration necessary.

Free Demo Week at Juguemos a Cantar South Slope & North Slope
Mar. 24-29 (Drop-in) Come and experience our Activity Classes before the Spring Session begins! Classes begin March 31.

Macy’s Flower Show 2014: The Secret Garden
Sun March 23rd – Sun April 6th.  Various times.  See website for schedule of events.  The season’s best kept secret is out as Macy’s Flower Show, Secret Garden, blooms back inside the majestic Main Floor of the Herald Square flagship. Uprooted from its home due to an extensive multi-year renovation, Macy’s Flower Show will move into a newly redesigned space with this year’s floral extravaganza. With a fresh new interior landscape to call home, Macy’s Flower Show at Herald Square will have a spectacular stage to return to following a two-year absence inside of the iconic department store. New York’s perennial floral favorite will blossom in-store on Sunday, March 23rd and bloom through Sunday, April 6th

The Little Prince: A New York Story at The Morgan Library And Museum (Midtown East)
Now through April 27, 2014.  Tu-Th 1030a-5p, Fri 1030a-9p, Sat 10a-6p, Sun 11a-6p.  Free with paid admission.  Readers throughout the world have embraced The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint–Exupéry’s tale of an interstellar traveler who comes to Earth in search of friendship and understanding. Saint–Exupéry wrote and illustrated the story in New York during World War II and it was first published here, in English and French. This exhibition of the original manuscript and watercolor drawings—the most comprehensive ever mounted—explores the American origins of a story that reminds us that what matters most can only be seen with the heart.

Free Storytime at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)
Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays at 11a for all ages.  Join The Scholastic Storyteller for readings of all-time favorite children’s books or new releases from Scholastic!  Perfect for babies and toddlers, these stories will spark imagination and fun in your budding bookworm.  Stroller Entrance: 130 Mercer Street.

Bessies’s Big Shot at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Now until June 29th Tue- Fri 1030a & 12n and Sat & Sun 1p.  Tickets: $7 children under 12y & $10 all others.  For all ages.  Based on the famed PuppetMobile show of the same name, this popular production makes its Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre debut!  Directed by Bruce Cannon and co-written by Douglas Strich, Alexander Bartenieff and Bruce Cannon, this version of the beloved show will feature several new puppets in addition to new and extended scenes.  It’s a bird … it’s a plane … no … it’s Bessie the cow!  CPF’s original production, Bessie’s Big Shot, follows Bessie the cow’s dream of joining the circus.  Can she lift more than Ziegfried, the strongest man in the world? Fly on a trapeze high above the crowd? Train Munson the Monkey?  This variety show cheers Bessie on as she attempts the impossible and searches for her special talents.

Our popular Open Play program is a time that offers a social learning environment for your children (ages 0-4) to grow and learn through creative play. With our space changing and growing every week, your little explorer will have lots to discover. Materials and activities are provided to engage you and your child while sparking their imagination.

Sing Along & Open Play at Creative Arts Studio (Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill)
Monday-Thursday 1-230p.  Drop-In Parent/caregiver supervised with an ArtsCetera staffer on hand. $10 per session.  Experts say our children are not getting enough unstructured play time, which they report is essential for healthy development.  Here’s a great way to add more free play time to your child’s lif in a safe, welcoming environment. Some sessions include a short Sing Along segment to add to the fun. Creative play for all ages from infants up to 5 years. Toys, coloring, lego table, puzzles, reading corner.
