Jeanene Mack, wellness coach and stylist, gives us a guide to back to school shopping, because we are tired of making lists. We need someone to just tell us what to do, or the only thing we’ll buy is a plane ticket, for one. (read: I’m ready to take a vacation from my summer “vacation.”)
It is a Friday morning and the line to Old Navy is out the door. In the corner two mothers are fighting over a 75% off fuchsia cardigan. I see a child aimlessly wondering around the store and another screaming in his stroller as his mother methodically checks items off her list. Is it Black Friday? No. It is the end of August and Back to School Shopping has begun.
Going back to school can be both exciting and a bit daunting, for the child and the parents. The less stress everyone experiences going into it, the smoother the transition will be…for everyone.
First, make a list of everything you need before school starts. (Things like new snow boots and a winter coat can wait until the REAL Black Friday). Most schools will mail/ email a list of classroom supplies that your child will need for the first day of school. After much research and real life experience I have found that the two top stores to get the best bang for your buck are Staples and The Dollar Store. You literally can walk in with your list and get everything you need without breaking the bank. Done and done.
Second, before you go shopping for clothing, you will need to go through what your child already has. This includes under garments and shoes. I say this so you don’t end up getting a bunch of things you do not need but also because once school actually starts you will want to focus on homework and after school activities not your child’s wardrobe.
Third, plan out ahead of time which stores are best for your budget so you don’t waste your time driving all over town. Some of my favorites that are appropriate for children of all ages and parents of all bank accounts are: The usual big box giants like Old Navy , Gap, H&M , Target. But spots like Zulily (online only) and the perpetual clearance section at Lands End (online) are also great. And of course their is alway L.L. Bean for backpacks that will never die and if they do you can send them right back, even years later, for a replacement.
Remember, this can actually be fun! I have two little girls that like to participate in the shopping experience and if you have a child that is at least mildly controllable, it is a good idea to include them. For one, they will be with you if you have any questions on whether or not the light up sneakers that they HAD to have will fit and they will be able to participate in what they will be wearing.
