Attention families in Crown Heights and all surrounding neighborhoods! There is a brand new spot in the hood, and no, I’m not talking about Berg’n (damn that place is cool). Brooklyn Art Hive is an art studio for kids offering morning classes and weekend workshops for 18 month to 5 year olds and hosting special art date nights for 3rd and 4th graders on Friday nights. While parents are out on a date, kids are doing art and eating pizza!
Brooklyn Art Hive is run by local parent Julie Kirkpatrick. This mom of two boys ages 2 and 4 years old moved to Crown Heights in 2010 and wanted to create something great for parents in her community. Class sizes are kept small (6-7kids) so kids can feel at home, and parents and caregivers can interact and create friendships in the neighborhood.
Kids are treated as fellow artists. They use natural materials whenever possible, and real tools, not a child’s version. Activities are open-ended, self-directed and process-oriented. Classes are designed to invite curiosity about a new medium or process, and are adapted to accommodate the individuals participating to ensure that every kid is engaged.
Registration is open now and the Fall Session begins the first week in October. An after school option will begin in January 2015 for elementary age kids. Find out more on their website ,by following them on Facebook and Twitter, and watching their video here:
