Weekday Events for October 7th-9th in Brooklyn & NYC!

So today really feels like Fall outside!  Can’t wait to see the leaves turn!  Has anyone gone apple picking yet?

The calendar is filling up with fun drop in events like Postnatal / Baby and Me at Sangha Yoga Shala,  Brooklyn Teen Meditation Group at the Brooklyn Zen Center, a Yellow Sneaker Singalong at the Tea Lounge, Find & Seek at the Brooklyn Public Library in Red Hook and Creative Movement at Play Kids!  Also happening this week we have the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance’s Annual Parade of Boats which can be viewed from Hudson River Park, Stomp, Clap & Sing with Bilingual Birdies at the Brooklyn Central Public Library and Reading Rangers in Madison Square Park!

Monday October 6th

Toddler Time at Kings Bay Brooklyn Public Library
Mon Oct 6th 11a-12n.  Free.
Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Listen to Hispanic stories and music. Learn how to make Hispanic arts and craft. This celebration emphasizes cultural diversity and an appreciation of Hispanic culture.

Postnatal / Baby and Me at Sangha Yoga Shala (Williamsburg)
Mondays 1-2p.  Bring your baby (optional).  $19 drop in (discounts with class packs available)
Ages: 6 weeks – New Walkers.  This class focuses on rejuvenating your body after childbirth through a flowing asana sequence while connecting with your newest addition in a playful and safe environment for babies. Rebuild strength and core needed to repair the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor stretched during pregnancy and labor.  You’ll also learn baby yoga exercises to strengthen growing muscles, aid in digestion, promote better sleeping patterns, and help your infant toward their next stages of development. Come join our growing Brooklyn community!

MWA’s Annual Parade of Boats at Hudson River Park Pier 62
Mon Oct 6th 6p.  Free.
The general public is invited to view the Parade of Boats free of charge. The parade extends north past Pier 62, a beautiful public space in Hudson River Park accessible by crossing the West Side Highway at 22nd or 23rd Streets. At Pier 62, a narrator with a public address system will regale the audience with details and stories about the passing vessels. Please note that tickets are required for access to The Lighthouse at Pier 61.

Pop Up Pool at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Mon Sep 1st 10a-6p for 45 minute sessions.  Last Day for all NYC pools!  Free.
A great way to beat the summer heat, the pool is 30- by 50 feet in size, and maxes out at an easy 3.5 feet deep—making it just right for families with smaller kids, too. Swimmers of all ages and levels are welcome to enter daily from 10 am to 6 pm for 45-minute sessions starting June 27. After your dip in the pool, you can relax in a lounge chair on the adjacent sandy beach. The Beach and Lizzmonade Brooklyn are open from 10 am to 11 pm. Lizzmonade Brooklyn serves fresh, artisanal lemonades that are made to order, and offers light, pool-side fare for kids and adults. After 6pm, fresh fruit sangrias, craft beer, and wine are on tap.

Back to School Bash 2014 at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Mon Sep 1st 11a-3p.  Free.
Bring the kids out for one last day of summer fun at Fort Greene’s favorite family eco-eatery! This year, there will be free glitter tattoos, stilt walkers, arts & crafts and much, much more!

West Indian American Day Carnival Parade
Mon Sep 1st 11a-6p.  Eastern Parkway and Schenectady Avenue to Flatbush Ext.
Come experience the crown jewel of NY Caribbean Carnival week featuring costume bands, masqueraders, moko jumbies, floats, delicious Caribbean cuisine and much more.

Labor Day In Prospect Park
Mon Sep 1st 12n-6p.  Free.  Celebrate Labor Day in Prospect Park. Learn what it takes to become a naturalist! In addition to enjoying the Audubon’s exhibits and animal displays, take part in the Blooming Naturalist at 1p, Nature on the Go at 2p and Animal Encounter at 3p at the Audubon Center!  Also happening Lefferts Historic House: Race Around the Farm Yard 2-4p ($3 suggested admission) Enjoy potato sack races, spoon races, stilts and other old-fashioned family fun and Prospect Park Carousel from 12n–6p.  ($2 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets). Enjoy a ride on the historic 1912 Carousel, which features 51 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer and two dragon-pulled chariots.   See the website for more details.

Tuesday October 7th

Stomp, Clap & Sing with Bilingual Birdies at the Brooklyn Central Public Library (Prospect Heights)
Tue Oct 7th 11a-12p.  Free.  Dweck Center.
The Bilingual Birdies Band celebrates language and culture in a fun-filled live music, dance and puppetry! Learn new words while you sing along to original hip tunes and your favorite traditional folk songs. Expect a high energy performance of guitar, trumpet, and percussion that will encourage everyone to be a part of the show! Families will joyfully bond as we conclude with our bubble dance party extravaganza! Join us for a magical journey everyone can enjoy together.

Brooklyn Teen Meditation Group at Brooklyn Zen Center
Tuesdays 4-530p.  Free!
This is open to all teens in Brooklyn and already takes place every Tuesday. A group of students come in for an hour and a half program that includes meditation practice, group discussion, the mindful practice of journaling and occasional mindful eating and/or cooking instruction. In a space designed to embody a mindful life, the group supports bringing mindfulness and meditation into aspects of school, social and home life, cultivates social and emotional intelligence, and strengthens the capacity to deal with stress and strong emotions. We have worked to create a space where teens can come together and engage in mindful-based activities and projects in order to create a culture of mindfulness in their lives.  COME AND JOIN US!

Community Class at Lava Studio (Prospect Heights)
Tuesdays 515-615p starting September 16th-November 18th for kids ages 5-12y.  Free!
Classes at the LAVA Studio offer students the opportunity to learn physical skills and fitness in an environment that is supportive and inclusive. LAVA classes focus on the physical rigor of acrobatic and dance training within an environment that is respectful, positive, and unpretentious. Taught by artists, the classes also include creative and performance exercises that engage and inspire students at all levels of experience.

Wednesday October 8th

Yellow Sneaker Singalongs at Tea Lounge (Park Slope)
Wednesdays at 10a.  $5/family.  For kids age 0-5 and their families​.
A Yellow Sneaker Sing-Along is a 45 minute interactive singalong with puppets and guitar, combining original songs, oldies, and traditional children’s music.  Sing, clap, dance, and shake your sillies out!

Reading Rangers in Madison Square Park (Flatiron)
Wednesdays until October 15th 1030a-1230p & 230-430p.  Free!
Through a partnership with Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Mad. Sq. Kids presents Reading Rangers on Wednesday’s. Join the playground activities assistant in the Police Officer Moira Ann Smith Playground for storytime readings every half-hour from 10:30am-12:30pm and 2:30pm-4:30pm. Each reading will be followed by an activity for children of all ages.  Books of the Day for October 8th:  The Monster Who Lost His Mean By Tiffany Strelitz Haber & Monstergarten By Daniel J. Mahoney

Creative Movement at Play Kids (Prospect Lefferts Gardens)
Wednesdays 330-415p. $10/child.  For ages 2.5-5y.  Classes are drop off but please remain local.
Classes are concept-based with a focus on natural movement as well as an introduction to basic principles of ballet technique. The Emile Jacques-Dalcroze approach to music is also incorporated; this method of music education ties in rhythmic movement as well as physical, vocal, and instrumental improvisation. Our creative movement class introduces movement and music dynamics  through imagery, musical direction and literary forms. This class encourages self-confidence, body awareness and focus while fostering coordination, rhythm, large and small motor skills, spatial awareness and flexibility.

Find & Seek in Brooklyn Public Library (Red Hook)
Thursdays 1030a-1130a until Nov 6th.  Free.
Workshops for 1 to 3 year olds and their caregivers supporting young imaginations in Red Hook. Includes interactive story time, exploring recycled and natural materials, art making and more!

Spellbound Explorers at Baby/Mama (Fort Hamilton/Bay Ridge)
Thursdays 1130a.  All Spellbound Explorer classes are drop-in but have limited seating, so you can register in advance to secure a spot.  Single classes (online or in-person): $15/one child, $22/siblings.  Discounts available for pre-purchasing class packs online.  Turn everyday into an adventure.  See, touch, smell, hear and move with your favorite stories as they come to life through performance and interactive arts activities. Led by professional actors who specialize in early childhood arts, Spellbound Explorers storytime classes will spark your child’s creativity and curiosity through song, puppetry, and creative play. Each week children and adults will dive into a story at class, and learn new art-based literacy activities to do at home.  Classes are drop-in and run at multiple locations around Brooklyn on a weekly basis.  See website for all the details.  Classes are designed to engage a wide range of ages and developmental stages, but are most enjoyable for ages 9 months through 3 years.  We encourage a mix of ages to allow for multiple methods of exploration and problem-solving, and to welcome families with siblings of various ages. All children over 4 months must be registered.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Mon-Thu now until May 29th 330-5p.  For ages 0-3y.  Drop-in – $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 pack/10 visits $120 (expires 3m from purchase).  Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns!  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija​. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.

Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure at The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre
Wed Oct 1st-Sat Nov 1st various times.  See website for times.Ticket prices are: $7/children under 12, $10/all others.  Show is recommended for children ages 3–9y.  Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure kicks off on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 and will run through Saturday, November 1, 2014.  Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure picks up where the original Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre production leaves off; with the pair’s pet swan Samantha flying the children back to their humble home after their wild escapade in the forest.  Safely back at home during the Halloween season; Hansel and Gretel experience the most vivid dreams where Central Park and the Belvedere Castle serve as the backdrop for a magical explosion of music, dance and exciting encounters with a host of lovable characters. The brother and sister team once again embark on an adventure where beautiful mermaids, adorable monsters, swashbuckling pirates, charming vampires and a fabulous witch all intertwine for one unforgettable Halloween night in New York City.  See website for additional dates and times.

Tuesdays, Thursdays 3-445p & Saturdays & Sundays 2-445p. For all ages.  Included in the price of admission.
Over, under, swing, and rock as you explore our newest space at BCM. Unlock doors on our Sensory Snake or relax and read on our fluff chair mountain This is an inclusive space that engages children of all abilities. This room provides a welcoming environment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Space is limited; availability on first come, first served basis.

M-Sun various times see website for all the details.  $12/first child, additional child $6.  Package 10 for $108.  Our backyard is intended for ages 6m to 6y.  We do not offer drop-offs.  Caregivers must be with their children at all times.

You can find Annie in the Police Officer Moira Ann Smith Playground, presenting fun and creative art activities.  All Mad. Sq. Kids activities are free and open to the public! Drop by the playground and say hi to Annie.  See the website for the art activity of the day.

Preschool Play at Wagner Park (Battery Park City)
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, now until Oct 29th, 2014 10am-12noon.  Free.
Join other toddlers, parents and caregivers for interactive play on a grassy lawn. Toys, books, and play equipment provided.  No sessions 10/14.   Location just north of Historic Battery Park, off Battery Place.

Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)

In the new exhibition Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, rare fossils, life-size models, and hands-on interactives bring these ancient animals to life.  Step back in time to see pterosaurs, including giants such as Tropeognathus mesembrinus,with a wingspan of more than 25 feet, and find out how they moved on land and in the air. Get a first-hand look at the rare pterosaur fossils that have helped paleontologists learn all that we know about these animals. In a virtual flight lab, use your body to pilot a pterosaur over a prehistoric landscape. Encounter the exceptional creatures that flew in the age of dinosaurs.

Dinosaur Safari: Mysteries Revealed at the Bronx Zoo
On going until November 4th 10a-5p.  Admission included in total experience ticket price.
Dinosaur Safari: Mysteries Revealed!  Nine new dinosaur species have been added this year including the deinonychus, prodohadros, stegosaurus, and edmontonia. Returning for the Dinosaur Safari: Mysteries Revealed, the ever-popular 40-foot long tyrannosaurus rex will send chills up the spines of Bronx Zoo adventurers.  At the end of the experience, there is a field site that includes a fossil dig for children; a Tyrannosaurus rex photo-op; a paleontologist’s tent that includes a fossil museum; and an interactive robotic dinosaur that illustrates how the animatronics work.

Le Carrousel in Bryant Park (midtown)
Now until October.  M-Sun 11a-8p.  One ride: $3.  Parents assisting children unable to ride solo will not be charged.  Discount cards:  buy a discounted card and enjoy 10 rides for $15.
Le Carrousel in Bryant Park, specially created to complement the park’s French classical style, is an homage to both European and American traditions. Its fourteen delightful animals, replicas of classic carousel creatures, revolve to the sounds of French cabaret music. The rounding boards, inspired by Bryant Park’s elegant baroque-style torchères along 40th Street, blend into the leafy canopy of the park’s plane trees.
