Weekday Events November 3rd-6th in Brooklyn & NYC!

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween and great weekend and were not awake too early this morning after the changing of the clocks!

The weather today reminds us that indoor time is coming since it is getting to be more brisk out!  This week you can start heading to the Congregation Beth Elohim for indoor play as the Tots Drop in Center opens this week.  Also there is an Open House at The Stomping Ground so you can find out all the information on classes and groups.

Also happening this week is a free art workshop with Brooklyn Art Room at Lark, Bilingual Birdies Speakin’ Spanish at NYPL Columbus Library, Stomp, Clap & Sing with Bari Koral at Brooklyn Central Public Library, Pumping 101 at Birth Day Presence and a Meet & Greet with UrbanSitter at Bija Kids.  Thursday is opening day for Canstruction!  The 22nd Annual NYC Competition will take place at Brookfield Place and be on display until November 20th.  Thursday is also the first day of The New York Festival of Light in DUMBO!

Monday November 3rd

Brooklyn Art Room Free Art Workshop at Lark (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Mon Nov 3rd 10-1045a.  Free.  For ages 2-5y.  **There is no guarantee that your child will get a spot. It is first come first serve. Registration strongly encouraged. To Register email Brooklynartroom@outlook.com with ‘Art at Lark:YOUR NAME’ in subject box.
Young artists and their caregiver will explore their artistic side by using their senses of sight, touch, smell and hearing to create two and three dimensional art pieces with natural and organic based materials. Full Description-Brooklyn Art Room is named after it’s birthplace and the idea that art can be created in any space whether it is your bedroom, a play space or the park. My art classes offer a studio inspired atmosphere as well as a developmental level of creativity using the senses. Students will explore the world of art making through two and three dimensions with many types of materials using natural and organic based products.

Toddler Art Adventures at Private Picassos Pop-Up Art Studio (Park Slope)
Mondays & Fridays 10-10:45am (18-36 mos).  $25/per child
This process-oriented art class is a great place to get started. It will help strengthen your child’s fine motor skills and ability to represent the world around them using a variety of materials.

Bilingual Birdies Speakin’ Spanish at NYPL Columbus Library (Midtown West)
Mondays 11a in November.  Free.
A foreign language and live music program for children ages newborn to five years old with parent/caregiver. The bilingual musicians teach through live music, movement, puppetry and games. Each session ends with a lively bubble dance party! Children learn basic vocabulary and short phrases while playing with instruments and fun props.

Tuesday November 4th

Stomp, Clap & Sing with Bari Koral at Brooklyn Central Public Library (Prospect Heights)
Tue Nov 4th 11a-12p.  Free.  Dweck Center.  Bari Koral is quickly becoming one of the most popular kids/family recording artists. Her catchy, pop friendly tunes, interactive live shows & heavy rotation radio play have gained her thousands of young (and not so young!) fans. The band’s hit album Rock and Roll Garden won the NAPPA Gold Award and Silver Parents’ Choice award as best album for tots. Her current album Anna and the Cupcakes features 10 wonderful new songs for children and families. Anna and the Cupcakes was recently named one of the coolest albums for kids by People Magazine. Children may pop like popcorn, surf the waves, run like the gingerbread man & may even learn to jam with the band.

Children’s Museum of the Arts Open for Election Day (SOHO)
Tues Nov 4th 12n-5p.   Ages 1-65: $11, Ages Under 1 and Over 65: FREE, Members: FREE
CMA will be open to the general public on Tuesday, November 4th from 12-5 PM for Election Day.  The museum will open to members for Members Only hours from 10 AM – 12 PM.  The CMA will also be open Tue Nov 11th for Veteran’s Day.

Wednesday November 5th

Pumping 101 at Birth Day Presence (Park Slope)
Wed Nov 5th 10a-12n.  $50/per person.  Are you getting ready to go back to work or spend more time away from your baby? Do you want to keep breastfeeding, maintain your milk supply and learn how to pump and bottlefeed? This class will help you continue to breastfeed while spending time away from your baby. Topics include: Tips for going back to work, How to pick a pump; how to pump and store breast milk, Maintaining milk supply, Preparing stored milk and understanding bottlefeeding strategies to support continued breastfeeding, Working with childcare providers who will be bottlefeeding your baby while you’re away, Understanding your pumping rights at work and how to pump while there

The Public Theater’s Mobile Shakespeare Unit Presents Pericles at St. Johns Recreation Center (Crown Heights)
Wednesday Nov 5th 11a-1230p.  Free.  Space is limited.  To attend, simply RSVP by calling (718) 771-2787 or emailing Brooklyn.RSVP@parks.nyc.gov.  Watch The Public Theater put on a very special performance of Shakespeare’s Pericles inside the Recreation Center!  Pericles, Prince of Tyre, was one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in his own time. A tale of riddles, revenge, and perilous adventure, Pericles tells the story of a prince whose life is threatened after he solves the puzzle of a murderous king. Forced to flee across the seas, he embarks on an odyssey that will see him fall in love, lose a daughter, and eventually recover everything he thought he’d lost. Directed by Rob Melrose.

Open House at The Stomping Ground (Crown Heights)
Wed Nov 5th 430-6p.  Free.  Please RSVP to jenabrams@Mindspring.com.  The weather is getting colder, and soon we’ll all be looking for more indoor activities to keep our kids (and ourselves!) from going stir crazy. The Stomping Ground is a great option! Join us on November 5th for an open house.The Stomping Ground is a membership-based, member-run play space at 636 Classon between Bergen and Dean. Members get a key to the space and can drop in whenever they want, 8am-8pm, 7 days a week*. Members also pay only $5-$8 for the great activities offered in the space, like Yoga for Tots, sing-alongs, Parent/Baby Pilates, and more!  The space offers a great environment for kids 0-4, along with some things to keep older siblings happy as well.  Membership costs $60-$70/month, and we have some scholarships available.

Thursday November 6th

Canstruction:  22nd Annual NYC Competition at Brookfield Place (Battery Park)
Thu Nov 6th – Thu Nov 20th 10a-6p (closes 5p on 11/20).  Free.  At the Winter Garden & 250 Vesey (North / South) Lobby
Canstruction® is an extraordinary annual design competition and the most unique food charity in the world. Teams of architects, engineers, contractors, and the students they mentor compete to build large-scale structures made entirely out of unopened cans of food. The imaginative sculptures are then on view to the public until they are dismantled and donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Admission is free, but visitors are asked to bring a can of high quality food to the exhibition’s collection station.  In anticipation of the Canstruction® 22nd Annual NYC Competition exhibition at Brookfield Place, past audience favorites will also be rebuilt and on display in the lobbies of 245 Park Avenue, Grace Building, and One Liberty Plaza. Once dismantled, the cans of food used to build these imaginative sculptures are donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Admission is free, but visitors are asked to bring a can of high quality food to the exhibition’s collection station.
Meet & Greet with UrbanSitter at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Thu Nov 6th 630-8p.  The event is FREE but they ask that you RSVP.

The New York Festival of Light 2014 (DUMBO)
Thu Nov 6th 7p-11p, Fri Nov 7th 5-11p, Sat Nov 8th 5-11p.  Free & open to all ages.
The first annual New York Festival of Light (NYFOL) will come alive November 6,7,8, 2014.  Enjoy the curated collection of lighting installations created by local and international lighting designers and performance artists and technologists who work within the medium of light.  This year, this cultural spectacle takes place after dark in DUMBO, Brooklyn, New York, in the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge and Pearl Street Triangle (Pearl & Water St).

Tots Drop in Center at Congregation Beth Elohim (Park Slope)
Tuesdays-Fridays 915a-12p November 4th, 2014-April 10th, 2015.  Fees: Temple Member $9/child, $15 with additional sibling.  Non-member $10/child, $17 with additional sibling.  Visit Passes available for purchase.  See website for more information.  For ages birth through 24 months.  All children are accompanied by their adult.
Parents, caregivers, and children come toghether to discover, learn and have fun!  The Drop-In Center is held in our Social Hall, which becomes a large indoor play space with age-appropriate toys and activities.  The program is coordinated by two early childhood facilitators.

Ice Skating at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Starting Oct 25th Tue-Thu 11a-6p, Fri 11a-8p, Sat 10a-9p and Sun 10a-6p.  Prices are as follows: skating admission (Wednesday–Friday) $6, (Weekends and Holidays) $8, skate rentals $6.  Ice Skating has returned to Lakeside in Prospect Park. With two spectacular 16,000 sq. ft. rinks (one covered and one open-air) seamlessly connected by an ice bridge, beautiful views of Prospect Park Lake, and indoor/outdoor dining at Bluestone Cafe; Lakeside is the perfect way to spend a day or night. Enter Prospect Park at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Lincoln Road.

WEE Arts Drop-in Session at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (South Village)
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 1045a-12p, $25 per family ($20 for members).  Want to stay longer? General admission is just $6 per person after drop-in.  Music time! Story time! Art time! Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session before we open our doors to the public. Parent and/or caregivers are required to join and we encourage family collaboration throughout the class. No sign up required.

Exploring the new frontiers of biology, health, robotics & technology!  Brooklyn Children’s Museum is excited to introduce young scientists to a number of interactive exhibits that inspire learning through a variety of topics including photomicrography, molecular biology, nanotechnology, robotics, and 3D printing. Join us and discover the amazing micro-world that exists beyond what we can see with our naked eyes. Find out how our new knowledge of science helps make the world a better place.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Mon-Thu now until May 29th 330-5p.  For ages 0-3y.  Drop-in – $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 pack/10 visits $120 (expires 3m from purchase).  Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns!  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija​. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.

Over, under, swing, and rock as you explore our newest space at BCM. Unlock doors on our Sensory Snake or relax and read on our fluff chair mountain This is an inclusive space that engages children of all abilities. This room provides a welcoming environment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Space is limited; availability on first come, first served basis.

Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)

In the new exhibition Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, rare fossils, life-size models, and hands-on interactives bring these ancient animals to life.  Step back in time to see pterosaurs, including giants such as Tropeognathus mesembrinus,with a wingspan of more than 25 feet, and find out how they moved on land and in the air. Get a first-hand look at the rare pterosaur fossils that have helped paleontologists learn all that we know about these animals. In a virtual flight lab, use your body to pilot a pterosaur over a prehistoric landscape. Encounter the exceptional creatures that flew in the age of dinosaurs.
