Quite a few annual holiday events started this weekend so take the little ones during the week to see the Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden, 22nd Annual Canstruction at the Winter Garden, Three Bears Holiday Bash at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science and the 13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal.
Also happening this week is S.T.E.A.M. Week 2014 at the Children’s Museum of the Arts with different workshops all week. Check out Stomp, Clap & Sing with Miss Nina at the Central Brooklyn Public Library, a Stroller Tour at the Guggenheim Museum, Love Monster and the Perfect Present Storytime at the Park Slope Barnes & Noble, and science fun with Little Bits at Brooklyn Heights Brooklyn Public Library. For the grown ups you can attend An Introduction to NYC Public Elementary Schools at Brooklyn Free Space and a free workshop called Create Effective To-Do Lists at the Dodge YMCA.

Opening Day at Grand Central Terminal’s 15th Annual Holiday Fair (Midtown East)
Starting Monday Nov 17th 10a-5p and everyday (except Thanksgiving) at various times until Wed Dec 24th. See website for full schedule. In the Vanderbilt Hall. Grand Central Terminal’s 15th annual Holiday Fair is the only holiday market in the city to operate indoors. This season, the Fair will fill Vanderbilt Hall with 76 vendors for six weeks each offering a wonderful array of holiday gifts for all your loved ones including art, clothing for adults and children, handbags, jewelry and accessories for men and women, bath and body items, home goods, collectible toys, holiday items and gifts for pets. Pop Up Pool at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Mon Sep 1st 10a-6p for 45 minute sessions. Last Day for all NYC pools! Free.
A great way to beat the summer heat, the pool is 30- by 50 feet in size, and maxes out at an easy 3.5 feet deep—making it just right for families with smaller kids, too. Swimmers of all ages and levels are welcome to enter daily from 10 am to 6 pm for 45-minute sessions starting June 27. After your dip in the pool, you can relax in a lounge chair on the adjacent sandy beach. The Beach and Lizzmonade Brooklyn are open from 10 am to 11 pm. Lizzmonade Brooklyn serves fresh, artisanal lemonades that are made to order, and offers light, pool-side fare for kids and adults. After 6pm, fresh fruit sangrias, craft beer, and wine are on tap.

($2 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets). Enjoy a ride on the historic 1912 Carousel, which features 51 magnificently carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer and two dragon-pulled chariots. Xtend Barre Babies on Board is a modified post-natal Xtend Barre workout for new moms and their babies. Baby will be in the bjorn/carrier while mom tones and strengthens the whole body in a safe and fun way. This workout is a great way to reconnect with the body while allowing for bonding time between mom and baby. Mom can expect to be challenged … safely, of course. Not suitable for babies over 18 pounds or younger than 6 weeks.

Canstruction: 22nd Annual NYC Competition at Brookfield Place (Battery Park)
Now until Thu Nov 20th 10a-6p (closes 5p on 11/20). Free. At the Winter Garden & 250 Vesey (North / South) Lobby Canstruction® is an extraordinary annual design competition and the most unique food charity in the world. Teams of architects, engineers, contractors, and the students they mentor compete to build large-scale structures made entirely out of unopened cans of food. The imaginative sculptures are then on view to the public until they are dismantled and donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Admission is free, but visitors are asked to bring a can of high quality food to the exhibition’s collection station. In anticipation of the Canstruction® 22nd Annual NYC Competition exhibition at Brookfield Place, past audience favorites will also be rebuilt and on display in the lobbies of 245 Park Avenue, Grace Building, and One Liberty Plaza. Once dismantled, the cans of food used to build these imaginative sculptures are donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Admission is free, but visitors are asked to bring a can of high quality food to the exhibition’s collection station.

Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)

Marvel at homemade gingerbread houses that are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane is made from only “real” edible ingredients: gingerbread, royal icing and candy. Last year’s GingerBread Lane at NYSCI was recognized as the largest gingerbread village in the world by the 2014 Guinness World Records.
13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd. M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p. (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details. Location: Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office. Free. Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!
Three Bears Holiday Bash at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

The Three Bears Holiday Bash, is a variety show that celebrates the holiday season in song, dance, and puppetry. This production quickly becomes a comedy of errors when Baby Bear invites Santa to star in Mama and Papa Bear’s annual holiday show. The audience also gets to join in on the fun with a “12 days of Christmas” sing-a-long during the performance! Drawing from the stories of Hanukkah, the Night Before Christmas, and Kwanzaa, The Three Bears Holiday Bash is a great way to get into the holiday spirit!
Tots Drop in Center at Congregation Beth Elohim (Park Slope)

Parents, caregivers, and children come toghether to discover, learn and have fun! The Drop-In Center is held in our Social Hall, which becomes a large indoor play space with age-appropriate toys and activities. The program is coordinated by two early childhood facilitators.

Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns! After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more! Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.
