Movie: The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe at Brooklyn Public Library (Bay Ridge)
Fri Jan 2nd 330-5p. Free. C.S. Lewis’ classic story of the magical land beyond the old wardrobe. This 2007 adaptation is faithful and magical, with Tilda Swinton as the White Witch and Liam Neeson as the voice of the great lion Aslan. Li’l Film Buffs at Videology (Williamsburg)
Sat Jan 3rd 1p. Free. Every first Saturday of the month, Li’l Film Buffs presents classic films of childhood. Both real kids and kids-at-heart are strongly encouraged! January movie: E.T. Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum (Prospect Heights)
Sat Jan 3rd 5-11p. Free. Crossing Brooklyn Artists’ Choice. Join us for Target First Saturdays and enjoy engaging and eclectic free art and entertainment programs every month, from 5 to 11p Michelin-starred Saul restaurant and bar is open all evening. The Counter café serves sandwiches, salads, and sweets, as well as wine and local beer. Parking is a flat rate of $5 starting at 5p. (All other Saturdays, we close at 6p). Some Target First Saturday activities take place in smaller and more intimate locations in the Museum, so you’ll need a ticket for those programs. Ticket lines often form 30 minutes before tickets are distributed at the Visitor Center (in the Rubin Lobby). See website for full schedule of events.
Astronomy: Quadrantids Meteor Shower in Marine Park
Sat Jan 3rd at 6p. Free. At the Salt Marsh Nature Center. Our Urban Park Rangers will be your guides to the solar system, discussing the science, history and folklore of the universe. Astronomy programs feature the use of telescopes and binoculars to observe specific astronomical events. Many programs feature astronomy experts and all equipments is provided. At this program, we’ll try to get a glimpse of the Quadrantids meteor shower, an annual meteor shower that happens at this time of year.

Little Laffs at the Jalopy Theatre (Carroll Gardens/Red Hook)

Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee: The Sound of Music at the Film Forum (South Village)

Victorian Toy Parlor at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Step back in time and play with wooden climbing bears, Jacob’s ladders, do-nothing machines, and other olden-day whatnots. No preregistration required; families with children of all ages can drop in anytime.
Teddy Bear Tea at Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden (UES)
Sun Jan 4th 1-2p. $10/Adults & $5 children under 12
Banish post-holiday boredom with an event for ages 3 to 6. Bring your favorite teddy bear (or doll) to meet Mrs. Woodhull, the hotel proprietor’s wife, and role-play the daily activities at the Mount Vernon Hotel in 1830. Play with her son’s toys or help her daughter with the chores. Afterward, enjoy fruit tea and cookies. Reservations recommended.

Marvel at homemade gingerbread houses that are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane is made from only “real” edible ingredients: gingerbread, royal icing and candy. Last year’s GingerBread Lane at NYSCI was recognized as the largest gingerbread village in the world by the 2014 Guinness World Records.

Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection. The New-York Historical Society will be transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The dynamic display will appeal to all age groups, showcasing the beauty and allure of toys from a bygone era. The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape will be on view in the Judith and Howard Berkowitz Sculpture Court, featuring artifacts grouped into ten scenes.
13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd. M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p. (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details. Location: Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office. Free. Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!
Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
