Weekend Family Events in Brooklyn & NYC: January 9th-11th

January has arrived with a blast of winter reality!  We have pulled out all our cold weather gear and looking forward to a weekend of indoor warm events!

This is the last weekend for the GingerBread Lane at New York Hall of Science and there is also a GingerBread Lane House Giveaway, check out the Icky Fest at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum happening all weekend and also see the Goldilocks & the 3 Bears at Puppetworks before it closes.

Also happening this weekend is a Live Encounter with a Wolf at the American Museum of Natural History, Figure 8 Play-Date with Martha Speaks at The LeFrak Center Lakeside, an Irish Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts, Meet the Radio City Rockettes at the Old First Reformed Church, enjoy The Lego Movie at the Nitehawk Brunch,  enjoy Handmade History! I Am an Architect! at the Brooklyn Historical Society and build a vehicle at Winter Wheels at the New York Transit Museum!

Friday January 9th

I Have a Dream Story & Craft Program at Brooklyn Public Library (Park Slope)
Fri Jan 9th 3-4p.  Free.  A craft program for school-age children (grades K-6) dedicated to celebrating Martin Luther King’s vision of brotherhood and peace.

Drop In Sing Along with Andrew of Rolie Polie Guacamole at LARK (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Fridays at 4pm! $10 per family.  Come sing and dance with Andrew from Brooklyn children’s band Rolie Polie Guacamole. Andrew will sing familiar favorites with books like “Brown Bear” and Rolie Polie Guacamole originals like “wake up Shake up” and “Always brush your Teeth.” The sing along starts at 4pm and bring those shakers!

Pajama Glow-in-the-Dark Yoga! at Karma Kids Yoga (West Village)

Kids should wear their pajamas to this special Friday night class! We’ll take a fantastical yoga adventure, play fun yoga games, then a story and yummy smelling foot rubs. Milk and cookies will be served after the class, a high energy dance party to expel that energy, then sweet dreams to follow! What a great way to kick off the weekend!

Saturday January 10th

Just Kidding: Stella, Queen of the Snow at Symphony Space (UWS)
Sat Jan 10th 11a & 2p.  Adults $26, Members $22 Kids $16, Members $14.
First published in 1999, Marie-Louise Gay’s Stella books remain a favorite with fans worldwide. Just Kidding is proud to present the New York premiere of this new stage adaption from the internationally celebrated Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia — for two shows only!  Featuring whimsical puppets, striking scenic effects and evocative original music, Stella, Queen of the Snow tells the story of two children spending the day playing in the snow. The forest, snowballs, snow angels and the mysterious white stuff itself provide fuel for questions and answers between brother and sister as they discover the world of winter together.

Handmade History! I Am an Architect! at Brooklyn Historical Society
Sat Jan 10th 11a-12p.  Free.  Reserve your spot here.  Everyone gets to be an architect at this week’s Handmade History! Families will first examine oil paintings that document Brooklyn landscapes from the early 1800’s. Then, back in art studio, we will plan and construct houses that reflect the architectural design aesthetics from this period using balsa wood and glue.

Live Encounter with a Wolf at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Sat Jan 10th 11a for children 5 and under (1p is sold out).  Enter at 77th St.  Cost: $12; $10 Members
Meet Atka, an Arctic gray wolf from the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) in South Salem, New York, on his visit to the Museum. Learn about wolves, highly endangered predators that play a vital role in sustaining a healthy ecosystem. WCC staff will discuss the organization’s participation in a program to reintroduce wolves into their traditional ranges in the western United States.

Meet the Radio City Rockettes at the Old First Reformed Church (Park Slope)
Sat Jan 10th 12n-2p.  Free.  Come warm up the new year with your children and Meet the Radio City Rockettes for FREE!! Learn how to strut some kicks and get autographs by the ultra glamorous Radio City Rockettes while enjoying Creative Dance and Story time with dancer Ella Rosewood and juice and cookies! Sunday January 11th

Irish Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (SOHO)
Sun Jan 11th 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.  During the month of January, CMA will team up with the Irish Arts Center to explore the creative world of Irish literature and folk arts at the Irish Festival, featuring live music, dance, theater and storytelling performances, and craft workshops!  January 11: Join the McManus School of Irish Dance for performances and workshops between 12 & 2:30 PM!

GingerBread Lane Giveaway at New York Hall of Science (Flushing)
Sun Jan 11th 1-5p.  Line opens at noon; giveaway starts at 1 pm. Free with NYSCI admission.
Take a piece of GingerBread Lane home with you! Houses will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis until every piece of GingerBread Lane is gone. Limit of 2 houses per family, while supplies last. Be sure to bring a box or bag with you so you can carry your gingerbread houses home. (Flat-bottomed shopping bags or paper grocery bags work best.)

Sun Jan 11th 2p.  Skating Admission: $8 Skate Rentals: $6 including tax
As part of this special WNET Kids Club THIRTEEN character skate series, families are invited for an afternoon of fun-filled activities and excitement with their favorite PBS Character.  Enjoy a meet and greet on the ice and character-themed activities and arts and crafts.

Extreme Kids: Mostly Monthly Music & Art at AMP Space (Red Hook)
Sun Jan 11th 2-4p.  $10 per child and $5 per additional sibling. Must RSVP to info@extremekidsandcrew.org to reserve your spot. At 2pm Diana Baron-Moore will lead a family art workshop making Sensory Bags! Using glow in the dark water beads, shaving cream, and food coloring, we will create magical sensory bags. Wear clothes that can get messy.  At 3pm we are thrilled that Jesse Neuman and his merry band of musicians, MusicWorks will be playing a show for us! Expect multi-instrumental fun, and expect to shake it!

All Weekend

Nitehawk Brunch: The Lego Movie (Williamsburg)
Sat & Sun Jan 10th-11th 1145a.  Tickets: $11.  PG run time 90 minutes.
Everything thing is awesome at Nitehawk with a special Lil’ Hawk friendly brunch screening of THE LEGO MOVIE.  Emmet’s an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average Lego minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously under-prepared.

MulchFest 2015 (various locations)
Sat & Sun Jan 10th-11th 10a-2p.  Free.  Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!  Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation , and GreeNYC  to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree . More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!  See the website for chipping and drop off locations.

Get Icky with the Trummytones at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Sat Jan 11th & Sun Jan 11th 2-230p.  For all ages.  Free with museum admission.
Led by world renowned trombonist and front man Vinny Nobile, The Trummytones fuse tuba, drums, accordion and Vinny’s high energy performance into an organic acoustic pop mix of zydeco and reggae that’s fun for all ages.  The annual Icky Fest is happening all weekend 11a-5p so see the website for all the Icky Fest details.

Transportation Inventions: Winter Wheels at the New York Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Sat-Sun Jan 10th-11th & 17th-18th 130p.  Free with museum admission.  For ages 5+
Use your imagination, a little inspiration and some wacky materials to plan, bluepring and buile a pint-sized bus, subway or elevatrated train car equipped for dashing through the snow!

Goldilocks & the 3 Bears at Puppetworks (Park Slope)

Closing Weekend: GingerBread Lane at New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)

Marvel at homemade gingerbread houses that are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane is made from only “real” edible ingredients: gingerbread, royal icing and candy. Last year’s GingerBread Lane at NYSCI was recognized as the largest gingerbread village in the world by the 2014 Guinness World Records.

The Amazing Max at the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center (UWS)

Holiday Express at the New-York Historical Society (UWS)

Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection.  The New-York Historical Society will be transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The dynamic display will appeal to all age groups, showcasing the beauty and allure of toys from a bygone era.  The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape will be on view in the Judith and Howard Berkowitz Sculpture Court, featuring artifacts grouped into ten scenes.

13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details.  Location:  Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.  Free.  Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!

Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
