This week a recall of about 169,000 IKEA crib mattresses in the United States was announced because there have been two reports of infants becoming entrapped between the mattress and the end of the crib. The babies were removed from the gap uninjured.
The recall involves the IKEA VYSSA crib mattresses with the following five model names: VACKERT, VINKA, SPELEVINK, SLÖA and SLUMMER. The mattresses were manufactured on May 4, 2014 and earlier and were sold from August 2010 to May 2014. The mattresses have an identification label attached to the cover that has the date it was manufactured in a Month-DD-YYYY format and the VYSSA model name.
Sold at: exclusively at IKEA stores nationwide and online at www.ikea-usa.com for about $100.
Remedy: Recalled crib mattress owners should inspect the mattress by making sure the gap is not larger than the width of two fingers between the ends of the crib and the mattress. If there is a gap customers should immediately stop using the mattress and return it to any IKEA store for an exchange or a full refund.
