Weekend Events in Brooklyn & NYC: January 23rd-25th

Hi everyone,

Looks like we are getting some snow this weekend.  Bet all the kids are excited!

This weekend there is lots to do like a Friday Night Workshop at Brooklyn Art Hive, enjoy the Winter Jam in Central Park, create at the Inventgenuity Festival at Beam Center,  check out the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company’s Lunar New Year Celebration at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, do some purging and shopping with Little Swappies at Williamsburg Northside Lower School and dance at Mil’s Trills 5th Annual Winter Bash at ShapeShifter Lab!

Also happening this weekend is the Family Concert:  Danny Weinkauf at The Jewish Museum, Theatreworks USA presents Click, Clack, Moo at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, an Irish Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts, Lionboy at The New Victory Theater and enjoy a Free Family Art Day at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe!

Friday January 23rd

Lego Club Challenge at Brooklyn Public Library (Carroll Gardens)
Fri Jan 23rd 345-515p.  Free.  Build a Lego creation from a cups of Legos!  Are you a Legos wizard? Do you love putting things into Legos? Well, say no more?  We are now having our own Legos club, with a challenge for each month.

Friday Night Workshop at Brooklyn Art Hive (Crown Heights)
Fri Jan 23rd 6-830p.  $45/child.  Recommended for kids K-3, Class size max. 8.  Drop off event.  Register here.  You can email bkarthive@gmail if you would like to check the age spread of the group before registering.  Better Gnomes and Gardens-Terrarium building!  Build a home for a miniature gnome, family, fairy, or any creature you can conjure up. They will need a place to play and sleep…and it’ll have to be pretty cool to look at too.  These workshops are one day only classes that let kids hang out with their friends, eat some food and come up with great ideas together. Class size is limited to 8 children so kids can create comfortably.  All supplies, and dinner with drink included.

Yoga Game Night! at Karma Kids Yoga (West Village)
Fri Jan 23rd 630-8330p.  Fee: $35 per child.  Call to reserve a space for your child (646-638-1444).  For ages 8 up.  A fun-filled evening of creative Yoga Games that help to build focus, balance and concentration, as well as enhance teamwork and an overall sense of friendship and community. And, Yoga Games are so much fun to play!  We’ll play favorites Including Yoga Yoga Pose, Tall Tree Small Tree, Toe-Ga, Big Booty, Obstacle Course, Peacock-Tail Tag, Drumbeat Hands, What Are You Doing, Wrong Room, The Yes Game, Family Snapshot and more!  We’ll stretch, hoop, dance and sing all night! Milk and cookies will be served.

Lionboy at The New Victory Theater
Fridays 7p also Saturdays 2p & 7p & Sundays 12n Jan 23rd-Feb 1st.  Tickets start at $15.  For ages 8+.  Performance: 2 hours including one intermission. When the Corporacy abducts his parents, resourceful Charlie Ashanti sets out to save them. Luckily, he’s got a secret weapon: he can talk to cats. Adapted by the Olivier Award-winning theatrical innovators Complicite, LIONBOY is a smart and adventurous staging of Zizou Corder’s bestselling trilogy. With inimitable visual virtuosity, Complicite’s ensemble takes you on a cross-continental rescue mission involving no less than a floating circus, a hot air balloon, a pride of talking lions and one clever chameleon.

Saturday January 24th

Little Swappies at Williamsburg Northside Lower School
Sat Jan 24th 10a-12n.  General tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 at the event. A general ticket is valid for ONE swap participant. Family members and children are free.  Access to the swap PLUS 2 vouchers both redeemable at the Masala Baby pop-up sample sale: 1 voucher for a pajama set and 1 voucher for a piece of your choice from their collection.  Purchase tickets here.  Bring a minimum of 8 new or very gently used items that your kids have outgrown: kids clothing (sizes 0-5), books, toys or maternity wear.  In exchange, take home up to 20 items for your families to enjoy.  All remaining items are donated to our charity partner, Room to Grow.  Bring the whole family and enjoy free babysitting, free stroller cleaning, face painting, music, arts & crafts projects, food and drinks, amazing raffle prizes and gift bags.  Attendees can also bring items that should NOT be swapped or donated – meaning old, stained or ripped clothing, blankets, or other textiles.  Although separate from the swap, all of these items will be recycled making the event 100% zero waste.  Everyone who brings textiles for recycling will automatically be entered to win a $200 gift certificate at any New York Kids Club location.

Winter Jam in Central Park
Sat Jan 24th 11a-3p.  Location: Bandshell Area Enter at 72nd Street.  Free for all ages.  Snow, rain or shine!  Presented by NYC Parks, Lake Placid, I Love NY,  and I Ski NY, Winter Jam NYC is the ultimate snow day: a free winter sports festival for New Yorkers of all ages! Our partners at Gore Mountain will blow lots of fresh snow in the heart of Manhattan, so there will be plenty for all to enjoy!  Featured Venues:  Lake Placid Snow Field, Snowshoeing, Learn to Ride: Skiing and Snowboarding, Sledding and Kicksledding, Snow Man Building, Taste NY Winter Market.  Equipment provided at no cost, or bring your own snow sports gear and enjoy the terrain! Please note: lines for activities may close early.

Brooklyn Family Boogie! at the Brooklyn Historical Society (Brooklyn Heights)
Sat Jan 24th 11a-12n.  Free.  Get tickets here.  Join us for a building “treasure hunt” to identify shapes and architectural details throughout BHS! After exploring the building, our friends from Together in Dance will help us create columns, stairways and balconies in small and large groups using our bodies.

Events for Youth & Families: Frosty at Brooklyn Central Public Library (Grand Armny Plaza)
Sat Jan 24th 1-2p.  Free.  Dweck Center.
The beloved snowman, known to melt everyone’s heart comes to life in a winter show for the whole family. Based on the classic tale enjoyed by millions around the globe this show is sure to put a smile on your face.

Park Slope Singers: Women & Children First at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (Bay Ridge)
Sat Jan 24th 3p.  Tickets at the door: $15 / Seniors & Students $10 pp.
Come join the Park Slope Singers as they present “Women & Children First,” a fun concert with light-hearted songs for children and a mixture of madrigals and contemporary music about women. Some selections include Animal Crackers, Cluck Ol’ Hen, Nelly Bly, Fair Phyllis, and Eleanor Rigby.

Mil’s Trills 5th Annual Winter Bash at ShapeShifter Lab (Gowanus)
Sun Jan 25th 11a doors / 1130a-1230p show.  $10 advance | $15 at the door (kids under 2 FREE).  For ages 0-7y.  Purchase tickets here.  Join this annual explosion of music, art, and community as Mil’s Trills celebrates its fifth birthday! Be the first to hear brand new songs, participate in creative arts activities and schmooze with some of New York’s finest musicians.  Stroller parking and refreshments available.

Theatreworks USA: Click, Clack, Moo at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (Midtown East)
Sun Jan 25th 11a & Sun Feb 1st 11.  Tickets $20-$30.  “Cows that type? Hens on strike! Whoever heard of such a thing!” Farmer Brown cries. Whin his granddaughter Jenny comes for a visit, Farmer Brown declared the farm a “tech-free zone.” He confiscates her laptop in the cold barn along with the shivering cows who use her computer to type messages requesting blankets. “No way,” replies Farmer Brown. “No blankets!” So the cows go on strike and the chickens join them in solidarity. No blankets: no milk, no eggs! Will Farmer Brown give in to the animals’ demands? Will Jenny get her computer back? Find out in a hilariously “mooooo-ving” musical about negotiation and compromise, based on the Caldecott Honor Book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin.

Sun Jan 25th  1115a-1245p.  Free.  Recommended for children ages 0-5y.  See, touch, smell, hear and move with your favorite stories as they come to life through creative play activities. Classes and public events are led by professional storytellers who specialize in early childhood. Free Family Art Days will spark your child’s creativity and curiosity through song, puppetry, and creative play.

Sun Jan 25th 2-3p. Ages 3 and up.  $18 adults & $13 children.  Jewish Museum Family Member: $15 adults & $11 children.
Grammy-winning bassist Danny Weinkauf (They Might Be Giants) and his Red Pants Band perform their hits songs “Archaeology,” “The Moon is Made of Cheese,” and others from the band’s popular album No School Today, along with TMBG favorites “Where Do They Make Balloons?” and “I Am a Paleontologist.”

Brooklyn Center Presents:  Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company’s Lunar New Year Celebration (Flatbush)
Sun Jan 25th 3p Tickets: $25/$12.50 (children 12 and under).  Please join us at 2pm in the theatre lobby for Chinese displays and vendors.  Usher in the Year of the Sheep, a year characterized by peace, love, and woolly gentleness, with a family-friendly performance by the world-renowned Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. This lively celebration of Chinese culture includes colorfully-clad dancers, ancient melodies played on traditional instruments, and awe-inspiring acrobats and lion dancers.

All Weekend

2015 Inventgenuity Festival at Beam Center (Cobble Hill)
Sat-Sun 11a-5p.  Admission free but registration required.  Register here for free admission.
Beam Center holds its annual Inventgenuity Festival, a hands-on celebration of technology, imagination and craft for young people in 2nd grade and up. Kids will explore this year’s Festival theme of “Balance” in workshops led by Beam Center faculty and by collaborating to build a twenty-foot tall spinning sculpture designed by Brett Van Aalsburg.  Once you’ve registered for admission you can sign-up in advance for one of our cool 45-minute workshops where kids 7 and up can make Marionettes, Drawing Robots, Air-powered boats, Coin-flipping Rube Goldberg Machines, and Analog Video Art!  The workshops have a materials fee of $8.25, and run throughout the day.

Irish Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (SOHO)
Sat & Sun Jan 24th-25th 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.
During the month of January, CMA will team up with the Irish Arts Center to explore the creative world of Irish literature and folk arts at the Irish Festival, featuring live music, dance, theater and storytelling performances, and craft workshops!  January 24: Join Andrew Vickers for interactive dance performances and workshops!  January 25: Join Leah Rankin for live cello performances and workshops between 12 & 3 PM!

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p and Sat & Sun 1p until June 26th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.

Holiday Express at the New-York Historical Society (UWS)
Now until February 22nd. Friday 10a-8p, Tue-Thu & Sat 10a-6p & Sun 11a-5p.  Free with paid admission.  Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection.  The New-York Historical Society will be transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The dynamic display will appeal to all age groups, showcasing the beauty and allure of toys from a bygone era.  The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape will be on view in the Judith and Howard Berkowitz Sculpture Court, featuring artifacts grouped into ten scenes.

13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details.  Location:  Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.  Free.  Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!
