The end of January is here and we have lots of fun events to keep you entertained.
This weekend enjoy the first annual Winter Carnival in Bryant Park, see Spellbound Theatre’s Wink at The Old Stone House, take the family to Dance at Mark Morris Dance Group, say goodbye to Cumbe at The Moving Party, enjoy Little Laffs at the Jalopy Theatre, look for birds on the Winter Bird Stroll for the Whole Family at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and check out Jazz 4 Kids at the Brooklyn Central Library.
Also happening this week is a Secret Garden Pajama Party at NY Kids Club, a Kids Book Launch: A Fine Dessert at POWERHOUSE on 8th, Step Into: Tu Bishvat at Hannah Senesh Community Day School and a Brooklyn Babywearing Support Meeting at the Central Brooklyn Public Library.

Winter Carnival in Bryant Park

Join the New York Kids Club in the Secret Garden for nature’s finest PJ Party. Children will bounce like frogs, wiggle like worms and march like ants through the imaginative outdoor wonderland in our state-of-the-art gym space. Children will chase a fox through the flower. Subway Safari: The Sleepy Subway at the New York Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturdays in January 1130a-12p. For ages 2-5y. Free with museum admission.
Many animals sleep deeply in underground caves or tunnels during winter to keep warm and safe. Subway trains also need to rest in their depots, to recharge and get ready for their work in the city’s busy subway system. Each session of this Saturday morning series of games and stories focuses on a sleepy animal that sometimes moves, sleeps and rests very much like the subway.
Events for Youth & Families: Jazz 4 Kids at the Brooklyn Central Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Sat Jan 31st 1-2p. Free. Explore the jazz legends of the world with Musical Legends interactive, educational program: “Jazz 4 Kids”. Together, with world renowned jazz musicians and vocalist/educator Lauren Hooker, the ensemble leads the audience through the origins of jazz, beginning the journey with a participatory African “Call and Response” song, Slave Songs and Spirituals and translating it into singing a “Twelve Bar Blues”, a “Swing” tune, and moving and grooving to a Calypso song demonstrating that Jazz influences music around the world. Children are exposed to jazz legends Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Mongo Santa Maria and Sonny Rollins while participating in “Jazz Etiquette”, “Trading Fours” and the freedom of improvisational scat singing.
Dance with Mark Morris Dance Group (Fort Greene)
Sat Jan 31st 3-4p. Free. Fun for the whole family, our free Dance with MMDG class is taught by an MMDG dancer and accompanied by live music. Each month focuses on a different dance in Mark Morris’ repertory. No experience is necessary. We encourage all ages and abilities to attend. See website for additional dates. RSVP here.
The Moving Party at Cumbe (Downtown Brooklyn)
Sat Jan 31st 9p-2a. Price: $10-$20 sliding scale. Celebrate Cumbe’s first three years and upcoming move with a night of dancing and great music! Feel the joy on Fulton Street one last time. Featuring: A Live Performance by our friends & Brooklyn’s 2012 Battle of The Boroughs Winner Brown Rice Family Band. Mini Dance Classes: Samba with Danielle Lima, Dancehall with Yaminah Legohn, and Sabar with N’deye Gueye. Brooklyn Babywearing Support Meeting at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
1st Sunday of the month 130-3p. Free. This is a great opportunity to try new carriers and learn new techniques. There will be demonstrations and hands-on help provided by Babywearing International volunteer babywearing educators. Parents-to-be, experienced babywearers, and “newbies” are all welcome to come learn, share your experiences, and chat with others about the many benefits of babywearing.

Spellbound Theatre: Wink at The Old Stone House (Park Slope)

Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted?
Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)

Lionboy at The New Victory Theater

Holiday Express at the New-York Historical Society (UWS)
Now until February 22nd. Friday 10a-8p, Tue-Thu & Sat 10a-6p & Sun 11a-5p. Free with paid admission. Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection. The New-York Historical Society will be transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The dynamic display will appeal to all age groups, showcasing the beauty and allure of toys from a bygone era. The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape will be on view in the Judith and Howard Berkowitz Sculpture Court, featuring artifacts grouped into ten scenes.
13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd. M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p. (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details. Location: Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office. Free. Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!
