Weekday Events for Brooklyn & NYC: February 2nd-5th!

Hi everyone,

Happy February!  I love February because it means we are closer to Spring!

We have fun events coming up this week like Celebrate Groundhog Day at the Staten Island Zoo, eat dinner with City Stomp at Dizzy’s, Bitty Bunnies Sing-a-Long with Lavender Blues at Play Kids, a Newborn Meet-up Group at The Stomping Ground, Masterpiece Mondays at The Jewish Museum, Stomp, Clap and Sing with Conroy Warren at the Central Brooklyn Public Library and Yak Packers at The Rubin Museum of Art.

Also FiDi Families are back at the Community Cube at South Street Seaport with free events in February and the Children’s Museum of the Arts has WEE Arts Drop-in Sessions everyday!

Monday February 2nd

Celebrate Groundhog Day at the Staten Island Zoo
Mon Feb 2nd gates open at 630a & the ceremony starts at 7a.  Admission to the ceremony is FREE!
Celebrate Groundhog Day at the Zoo!  When Staten Island Chuck emerges to let us all know whether spring is just around the corner or if it will be six more weeks of winter.  Chuck’s accuracy rate has topped 80% – tops among all groundhogs!  Patrick and the Rock-a-Silly Band will perform during the ceremony.

Dancing Tots Movement & Dance Class! at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Mondays 2-245p.  For ages 20m-2y.  $10 per child drop in.  Dancing Tots introduces movement and music dynamics through imagery, musical direction and literary forms.  With lots of pretend play and physical expression, this class encourages self confidence, body awareness while fostering coordination, rhythm, large and small motor skills, spacial awareness and flexibility.  Taught by a dancing mama of one expressive 3 year old, classes are very much inspired by the imagination and natural learning inclinations of the kids.  Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe also has $5 Open Play at various times M-F.  See website for schedule.

Masterpiece Mondays at The Jewish Museum (UES)
Monday February 2nd 4-5p.  Free with Museum admission.  For ages 4-7y.

Tuesday February 3rd

Stomp, Clap and Sing with Conroy Warren at Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Tue Feb 3rd 11a-12n.  Free.  Feeling the beat! Enjoy the power and pleasure of Jazz, Calypso and Reggae through singing and dancing in this interactive performance with versatile entertainer Conroy Warren. It’s fun!  It’s exciting!

Music with Miss Katie at LARK (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Tuesdays 11a-1145a.  $5 drop in, all are welcome!
Singing a mix of classic kid favorites and rare folk gems, Miss Katie is known for bringing the sing along fun to Brooklyn families! As one parent put it, “Miss Katie knows how to connect with caregivers, parents and children to bring out the rhythm in all of us.”

Free Spirits Music Songwriting Workshop at Complete Music Studio (Prospect Heights)
Free but please RSVP.  RSVP here.  Mini Singer/Songwriters: Tue Feb 3rd 4-5p for 4-6y olds.  Free Spirits Songwriting Workshop: Tue Feb 3rd 5-6p for 7-11y olds.  Tuesday, February 3, Free Spirits Music hosts it’s 5th Songwriting Extravaganza Day!  Kids 4-11 are welcome to explore guitars, ukuleles, drums, and microphones at Prospect Heights’ rehearsal space Complete Music Studios (227 St Marks Ave). We will write a song in 45 minutes, make our own guitar picks, and learn more about the 14 week program.

Wednesday February 4th

Newborn Meet-up Group at The Stomping Ground (Crown Heights)
Wednesdays 10-11a.  Free for members / $5 non-members.  Please bring correct change to all classes.
Come meet other new parents (or just get out of the apartment!). PJs and slippers considered completely appropriate attire. This group is facilitated by a member parent.

Kids Explore! at Borough Park Brooklyn Public Library
Wed Feb 4th 3-4p.  Free.  Lego, colorful interlocking plastic bricks can be assembled and connected in many ways, to construct vehicles, buildings, and people. Anything constructed can then be taken apart again, and repurposed.

City Stomp at Dizzy’s (Park Slope)
Wednesdays.  Seating at 5:30 (show at 6p).  City Stomp are now doing shows every week at Dizzy’s.   Called the Best Place to Rock Out While Having Dinner by Time Out New York Kids, shows are free with a dinner reservation. Reservations required to make reservations please send an email to citystompdizzys@gmail.com.  Spaces fill up fast so email early!

Thursday February 5th

Yak Packers at The Rubin Museum of Art  (Chelsea)
Thursdays 1030-1130a,  For ages 2-4y.  $15 includes class and museum admission for one adult and one child.  Free to children under 1 year. The Yak Packers look at, touch, and explore Himalayan art inspired by the museum’s collection. Classes include play, storytelling, trips to the galleries, and art-making activities.  Each week’s class runs on the same schedule with rotating themes throughout the year. Some themes include: lines, patterns, colors, flowers, and shapes.  Also on Wednesdays.  See full details and purchase tickets here.

Bitty Bunnies Sing-a-Long with Lavender Blues at Play Kids (Prospect Lefferts Gardens)
Thursdays 1230p.  $10 drop in.
Lavender Blues is an intimate music & movement session for babies and toddlers.  This class is babies only! Special 30 min infants only music class. A bit calmer and more intimate of a group! A lovely bonding experience for baby and you!

Kids Create: Making Cloud Pets with Charrow at Brooklyn Heights Public Library
Thu Feb 5th 4-5p.  Free.  In this program kids will be asked to create their own pet cloud. What does it look like, what color is it, what does it wear, and what is its personality like? This project is inspiration for imagination.  Charrow is an illustrator and greeting card designer living in Brooklyn. She loves squirrels, puns, and the absurd.

FiDi Families: Community Cube at South Street Seaport
Monday, Wednesday & Fridays  in February 10a-12n except Friday 2/13 & Monday 2/16.  Free.
The Howard Hughes Corporation, in partnership with FiDiFamilies.com, and sponsor New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital invites local families inside the Community Cube at the South Street Seaport.  We are excited to announce a new month of FREE programming at the Seaport Community Cube! Join us on Monday for a fun kids concert with Music for Aardvarks at 10am. We will be joined by Jam with Jamie & Friends on Wednesday and wrap up our first week with Bilingual Birdies on Friday, February 6th.  Lots of fun giveaways and complimentary snacks from some great new brands. Join us every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in February.  See website for other upcoming events in February.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Mon-Thu now until May 29th 330-5p.  For ages 0-3y.  Sign up here and then drop-in – $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 pack/10 visits $120 (expires 3m from purchase).  Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns!  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija​. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p,  Sat & Sun 1p until June 28th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.

WEE Arts Drop-in Session at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (South Village)
Monday-Friday 1045a-12p, $25 per family up to 5 ($20 for members).  Want to stay longer? General admission is just $6 per person after drop-in.  Music time! Story time! Art time! Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session before we open our doors to the public. Parent and/or caregivers are required to join and we encourage family collaboration throughout the class. No sign up required.

Holiday Express at the New-York Historical Society (UWS)
Now until February 22nd. Friday 10a-8p, Tue-Thu & Sat 10a-6p & Sun 11a-5p.  Free with paid admission. Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection.  The New-York Historical Society will be transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The dynamic display will appeal to all age groups, showcasing the beauty and allure of toys from a bygone era.  The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape will be on view in the Judith and Howard Berkowitz Sculpture Court, featuring artifacts grouped into ten scenes.

13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details.  Location:  Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.  Free.  Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!
