Weekday Events for Brooklyn & NYC: February 9th-12th

Hi everyone

Looks like NYC is getting more snow this week but everyone can still have fun with all the events happening this week!

This week you can get out of house and enjoy Open Play with Sing-a-long at Aikido of South Brooklyn, check out a Valentine’s Day Party for Tots! at Juguemos a Cantar North Slope, Sing Along with Frank from Rolie Polie Guacamole at OS Cafe, make Valentine Day Cards with Kathleen the Park Lady at the Brooklyn Public Library and a Folk Song Sing-A-Long with Katy Stone at the Park Slope Brooklyn Public Library.

Also this week is Preschool of Rock at the South Street Seaport Community Cube, Free meetup events with Tinkergarten in Central Park, enjoy a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Dyker Brooklyn Public Library and check out South African Storytelling and Mask-Making at the Williamsburg Brooklyn Public Library.

Monday February 9th

Community Cube: Preschool of Rock at South Street Seaport
Mon Feb 9th 10a-12n.  Free.  Preschool of Rock has redefined children’s music by combining entertainment and education through exhilarating performance. Along with a vast catalog of original children’s music, Preschool of Rock offers classes, shows, preschool enrichments and birthday parties throughout New Jersey and New York. We provide the hippest music education for young children, inspiring creativity, confidence, and freedom of expression.  The Howard Hughes Corporation, in partnership with FiDi Families, and sponsor New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital will add a second month due to high demand inside the Community Cube (Fulton Street, between Front and South Streets) at the South Street Seaport Mondays, Wednesday and Friday’s (except 2/13 & 2/16) thru February. Children will have a chance to partake in educational music, arts, crafts and technology.  See website for future events in February.

Open Play with Sing-a-long at Aikido of South Brooklyn
Mondays 10a-12p.  For all ages up to 4 years.  $10 for two hours, no reservations needed!
Experts say our children are not getting enough unstructured play time, which they report is essential for healthy development.  Here’s a great way to add more free play time to your child’s lif in a safe, welcoming environment. Some sessions include a short Sing Along segment to add to the fun. Creative play for all ages from infants up to 5 years. Toys, coloring, puzzles, etc., reading corner.  Drop-In, No Registration or Reservations Needed;Parent/caregiver supervised with an ArtsCetera staffer on hand.

Valentine Day Cards with Kathleen the Park Lady at the Brooklyn Public Library (Carroll Gardens)
Monday Feb 9th 3-5p.  Free.  Make a Valentine’s Day Card for that special someone with our Kathleen the Park Lady.

Tuesday February 10th

Toddler Art and Play Class at SuperFrench Studio (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Tuesdays 2-3p until March 24th.  $18/class.  For ages 13-24m.
“My First Art and Play” class at the SuperFrench Studio! Each class begins with a hello song, story, and group art project. It all comes together in the end with a fun open play with age appropriate toys! South African Storytelling and Mask-Making at the Brooklyn Public Library (Williamsburg)
Tue Feb 10th 4-5p.  Free. For ages 5+.  Watch a performance of King Lion’s Gifts, Nelson Mandela’s favorite story, and then join us in making masks of the South African animals presented in the tale!

Folk Song Sing-A-Long with Katy Stone at the Brooklyn Public Library (Park Slope)
Wednesday Feb 11th 1130a-1215p.  Free.  Join Katy Stone for a sing-a-long for babies and toddlers! Tickets are required and will be given out 1/2 hour before the start of the program at the reference desk.

Breastfeeding Support Group at Gumbo (Boerum Hill)

Breastfeeding Support Group with Certified Lactation Counselor, Bethany Nevin.  Successful breastfeeding is often dependent on the support of others.  Join our breastfeeding circle where you’ll gain that support and learn from the knowledge and experience of fellow nursing mothers.  As moms who have breastfed their own children, Mollie and Bethany know firsthand that while breastfeeding is a normal and natural relationship between mother and child, it can sometimes come with unexpected challenges.  Together we’ll explore these challenges as well as the joys of breastfeeding.

Thursday February 12th

Valentine’s Day Party for Tots! at Juguemos a Cantar North Slope
Thu Feb 12th 9a-12n.  $10 per child/$2 siblinb.
Come join us for our FIRST PARTY of the year! (Drop-In) There are lots of fun things to do in during our open Play Space party!  Themed arts & crafts, sing along, healthy snacks & refreshments, tattoos & lots of fun!
Free meetup event with Tinkergarten in Central Park (UWS)
Thu Feb 12th 10-11a.  Free.  One of the team will meet you at the 72nd street & Central Park West, and direct you to a special grassy area, just down the hill.  We welcome all parents looking to bring their kids on an outdoor adventure!  We’ll meet at West 72nd Street entrance at 10am. Just down the hill is a lovely open space for our activities, and benches for those who want to take a break and warm up with coffee, kid-friendly blueberry tea and homemade ginger snaps!  PLEASE NOTE: Please make sure to dress your kids warmly (read some tips on how!) Though we advocate having kids out in most kinds of weather, safety is our number one concern. We’ll keep a close eye on the forecast. If we need to reschedule, we’ll send a message via Meetup at least 1.5 hours before the event is scheduled to start.  Also a meetup on the UES at 330p.

Chinese New Year Celebration at the Dyker Brooklyn Public Library
Thu Feb 12th 315-415p.  Free.  Since 1984, Music From China has brought the best of Chinese music — ancient, folk and contemporary — to audiences in the New York area and beyond. Founded by Director Susan Cheng, and with Artistic Director Wang Guowei, the ensemble has carved a unique place in the music world by playing not only the traditional repertoire, but creating and presenting new work by established and emerging composers.  The Dyker Singers will be joining the ensemble as well, performing “Mo Li Hua” (Jasmine Flower).

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Mon-Thu now until May 29th 330-5p.  For ages 0-3y.  Sign up here and then drop-in – $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 pack/10 visits $120 (expires 3m from purchase).  Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns!  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija​. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p,  Sat & Sun 1p until June 28th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.

WEE Arts Drop-in Session at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (South Village)
Monday-Friday 1045a-12p, $25 per family up to 5 ($20 for members).  Want to stay longer? General admission is just $6 per person after drop-in.  Music time! Story time! Art time! Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session before we open our doors to the public. Parent and/or caregivers are required to join and we encourage family collaboration throughout the class. No sign up required.

Holiday Express at the New-York Historical Society (UWS)
Now until February 22nd. Friday 10a-8p, Tue-Thu & Sat 10a-6p & Sun 11a-5p.  Free with paid admission. Holiday Express: Toys and Trains from the Jerni Collection.  The New-York Historical Society will be transformed this holiday season with the installation of a spectacular exhibit of treasures from the renowned Jerni Collection, now owned by the New-York Historical Society, of model trains, scenic elements and toys. The dynamic display will appeal to all age groups, showcasing the beauty and allure of toys from a bygone era.  The exhibition begins at the West 77th Street entrance, where movement and sound from four large-scale multimedia screens will make it seem as though trains are roaring through the space. A 360-degree mountainous landscape will be on view in the Judith and Howard Berkowitz Sculpture Court, featuring artifacts grouped into ten scenes.

13th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Now until February 22nd.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  (extended hours November 22n-December 24th – see website for details.  Location:  Shuttle Passage adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.  Free.  Lionel trains once again will capture hearts and imaginations at the Transit Museum where Metro-North, New York Central and subway trains depart from a miniature GCT. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Gift Fair offer great gifts for your holiday shopping!
