It is snowing again but the good news is it is finally March and we have lots of fun weekday events happening.
This week we have a Pop Up Book Workshop at the McKinley Park Brooklyn Public Library, Shadow Box Theatre’s The African Drum at PS 3 The Bedford Village School, Story Time with Barney Saltzberg at Boulevard Books & Cafe, drop in Uhuru with Jamie Philbert at Brooklyn Ballet, Baby and Me Pilates at Pura Vida Urban Fitness and Building Circuits with littleBits at the Brooklyn Washington Irving Public Library.
Also happening this week is a Community Class at Lava Studio, a “Fruiggietime class” Free Trial at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe, jTot: Purim in Candyland and Lavender Blues at SuperFrench Studio.

Uhuru with Jamie Philbert at Brooklyn Ballet (Downtown Brooklyn/Boerum Hill)
Mondays 1030a-1115a. Drop in $17. Parent/guardian participation is required. Creative Movement for Early Walkers, Ages 1-2. Uhuru (the Kiswahili word for “freedom”) is a series of creative movement classes featuring Jamie Philbert’s signature pedagogy – a combination of song, dance, and play designed to ignite children’s creative voices and nurture their freedom of expression, building a foundation for a lifelong creative practice. This class is an exciting and safe space for children to discover creative movement, song, and rhythm, as they begin to walk and develop their balance and coordination. Classes feature stimulating games, drumming, singing, and interactive stories.
Baby and Me Pilates at Pura Vida Urban Fitness (Prospect Heights)
Mondays 1030a-1115a. $20/class. Membership available also. Baby and Me Pilates is perfect for parents with babies who can’t yet crawl (at least not too far!) Get in a regular Pilates workout while also keeping your little one occupied and entertained! We incorporate games like peek-a-boo and sing-alongs throughout the workout, so you get all the benefits of Pilates and your baby has fun too!
Pop Up Book Workshop at the McKinley Park Brooklyn Public Library
Mon March 2nd 330-5p. Free. Limited to 16 participants. Program in English and Mandarin. This workshop, by Artist Pixy Yijun Liao will teach participants how to manipulate paper through the folding and cutting of a basic pop-up book. Participants are encouraged to make a book using drawings and simple Mandarin characters. This project will help the students to express themselves through book art making. It also focus on strengthen their Mandarin vocabulary and handwritings. The final works will be exhibited at the library for public viewing before returning to the students. Stomp, Clap & Sing with Silly Jazz and Camille! at Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Tue March 3rd 11a-12n. Free. Dweck Center. Come dance along to “silly jazz” with comedian and jazz singer, Camille Harris. Popular songs include: “The Monster Under My Bed,” “Muffin Man,” and “Chopsticks.” Camille Harris on piano, Jeff Kerestes on bass, and David Tedeschi on drums.
Story Time with Barney Saltzberg at Boulevard Books & Cafe (Dyker Heights)
Tue Mar3rd 11a-12n. Event fee: $6 includes a copy of REDBIRD. Barney will be flying in all the way from the west coast to delight us in a read-a-loud and presentation of his new REDBIRD board books!! You love ARLO NEEDS GLASSES and showed your little ones that mistakes are ok and can even be better than what was intended after reading BEAUTIFUL OOPS. We’re so excited to have him back and at Boulevard! The REDBIRD books will explore colors (Colors, colors, Everywhere!) and what makes us different from our friends (Friends Come In Different Sizes)
Community Class at Lava Studio (Prospect Heights)
Tuesdays 515-615p until March 20th for kids ages 5-12y. Free! Classes at the LAVA Studio offer students the opportunity to learn physical skills and fitness in an environment that is supportive and inclusive. LAVA classes focus on the physical rigor of acrobatic and dance training within an environment that is respectful, positive, and unpretentious. Taught by artists, the classes also include creative and performance exercises that engage and inspire students at all levels of experience.

Shadow Box Theatre Presents: The African Drum at PS 3 The Bedford Village School (Bedford Stuyvesant)

The African Drum is a truly magical “shadow puppet-and-people” show beloved by children for almost three decades. Come listen to the wit, wisdom and humor of four wondrous African folktales told by our drummer, our storyteller, our talented cast of performers – and See-More, our hallmark puppet. Listen to the beat of the African rhythms as they reveal the exciting musical adventure of the little girl Kijana, her animal friends, and the Zimwe (bad man) who tricks her. Learn How The Turtle Got Its Shell, How The Animals Got Their Colors, and why the Egret Flies Free all woven together within Kijana’s Tale.

Wednesdays at 1230p. $8/drop-in. Babies only! Special 30 min infants only music class. A bit calmer and more intimate of a group! A lovely bonding experience for baby and you!
Building Circuits with littleBits at the Brooklyn Washington Irving Public Library
Wed March 4th 4-5p. Free. No registration required. Learn about creating your very own circuits using interlocking magnetic parts. Design and build your concepts from littleBits circuits.

“Fruiggietime class” Free Trial at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Thu March 5th 1130a. Free trials. Ages: 2yrs-5yrs. In this story time and art class, we will read a picture story book every week exploring different wordly cultures, sustainability, eco-friendliness, eating healthy and art. Fruiggiekids will then engage in an art project inspired by the book of the day, using a variety of techniques, kid size easels, fruits and vegetables, all natural materials, non-toxic paint, natural glue and crayons, and more unconventional materials. Parents and care-givers will also be included in the fun!
*All Fruiggie art supplies such as our paints, glue and crayons are non-toxic, vegan, gluten free, fruit, vegetable and plant based.
jTot: Purim in Candyland

Book Adventures at the Carroll Gardens Brooklyn Public Library
Thursdays until March 26th 415p-5p. Free. For ages 5 to 12y. Transport yourself to different worlds with books and factual insights. This is a Read Aloud program followed by an activity, inspired by arts or crafts. Adventures, we will be exploring: Crime Scene Investigator, Secret Agent: Cracking the Code, Be an Illustrator, Shapes in Art, Simple Machines and the Impact on our Daily Lives, Doodle Diary, Flight and People in Flight.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Mon-Thu now until May 29th 330-5p. For ages 0-3y. $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 pack – $120 now $99** in February (single child pack) or $200 now $179** in February (family of 2 or more children pack). Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns! After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more! Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.
WEE Arts Drop-in Session at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (South Village)
M-F 1045a-12p, $25 per family ($20 for members). Want to stay longer? General admission is just $6 per person after drop-in. Music time! Story time! Art time! Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session before we open our doors to the public. Parent and/or caregivers are required to join and we encourage family collaboration throughout the class. No sign up required.
Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p, Sat & Sun 1p until June 28th. Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults. Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
