Weekend Events for Brooklyn & NYC: March 6th-8th

Two weeks until Spring but it doesn’t feel like it with the snowstorm today.  The good news is we have lots of events happening this weekend in Brooklyn & NYC to help you beat the winter blues!

This weekend check out Target Free First Friday Nights at Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Shadow Box Theatre: The African Drum at PS 3 The Bedford Village School, Brooklyn Center Presents: The Beauty of Ballet, the Craic Fest: Kids Film Fleadh at Tribeca Cinemas, Beatles for Little Rockers at Brooklyn Bowl, LolliPops: World Tour! at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, New York Family’s Camp Fair at Berkeley Carroll School and a Persian Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts!

Also this weekend there are lots of fun events at the Brooklyn Public Libraries like Karen K and the Jitterbugs and 90-Second Newbery Film Festival at the Central branch and also Ready, Set, Kindergarten! and Read Across America at various Brooklyn Public Library branches.

Friday March 6th

Shadow Box Theatre Presents: The African Drum at PS 3 The Bedford Village School (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Fri March 6th 1030a.  See website for additional dates and times.  Tickets $10 in advance and $15 at the door.  Our perennial favorite for African-American History Month! The African Drum is a truly magical “shadow puppet-and-people” show beloved by children for almost three decades. Come listen to the wit, wisdom and humor of four wondrous African folktales told by our drummer, our storyteller, our talented cast of performers – and See-More, our hallmark puppet. Listen to the beat of the African rhythms as they reveal the exciting musical adventure of the little girl Kijana, her animal friends, and the Zimwe (bad man) who tricks her. Learn How The Turtle Got Its Shell, How The Animals Got Their Colors, and why the Egret Flies Free all woven together within Kijana’s Tale.

Celebrate Read Across America at Brooklyn Heights Public Library
Fri March 6th 1030-1130a.  Free.  See website for additional Read Across America events happening at other Brooklyn Public Library branches all day Friday March 6th.  Help us celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin with illustrations by Betsy Lewin.  Join us for a Read-Aloud with guests from the FDNY.

Target Free First Friday Nights at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Fri March 6th 5-8p.  Free.  On the first Friday of every month admission is free from 5 – 8pm, sponsored by Target.

Saturday March 7th

Lego My New York City at The City Reliquary (Williamsburg)
Sat March 7th 10a.  Family ticket $10 (1 adult/1 child).  A hands-on lego building class with Master Lego Builder Eleanor Rogers. We’ll focus on building scenes from the NYC skyline and cityscape. Participants will get to take home legos!

Craic Fest: Kids Film Fleadh at Tribeca Cinemas
Sat March 7th 11a.  For kids 4-12y.  $10 for adults & kids.  A fun program of Award-winning shorts such as the award winning short Rockmount and Oscar nominated Short Give Up Yer Aul Sins. Also we have Irish Step Dancing (Niall O’Leary dancers) and Storytelling (John Liam Shea & Honor Molloy). Followed by a reception. Goodie bags for the Kids. Free tea/coffee and scones.

Karen K and the Jitterbugs at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Sat March 7th 1-2p.  Free.  Location: Dweck Center.  Find adventure and make music with Karen K and her imaginary friends, the Jitterbugs: Bumble (Seth Connelly, guitar); Stinky (Dan Wheddle, drums); Hop (Eric Salt, bass); side-kick and best friend, Lightning Bug (Aaron Jones, banjo and everything else); and Lady Bug (Tracey O’Farrell, vocalist).

Brooklyn Center Presents: The Beauty of Ballet (Flatbush)
Sat March 7th 2p. Free.  Recommended for ages four and up.  Join students and faculty of the world-famous School of American Ballet, the official academy of New York City Ballet, in this program illustrating the process by which talented youngsters develop into accomplished classical ballet dancers.

Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum (Prospect Heights/Crown Heights)
Sat March 7th Women Changemakers 5-11p.  Free.  Join us for Target First Saturdays and enjoy engaging and eclectic free art and entertainment programs every month.  Michelin-starred Saul restaurant and bar is open all evening. The Counter café serves sandwiches, salads, and sweets, as well as wine and local beer. Parking is a flat rate of $5 starting at 5 p.m. (All other Saturdays, we close at 6 p.m.)  Some Target First Saturday activities take place in smaller and more intimate locations in the Museum, so you’ll need a ticket for those programs. Ticket lines often form 30 minutes before tickets are distributed at the Visitor Center (in the Rubin Lobby). If you’re a Member, pick up tickets from the Membership Desk while supplies last.  See website for schedule of events.

Sunday March 8th

Persian Festival at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (SOHO)
Sundays in March 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.  During the month of March, CMA will team up with the Dr. Goldbarg Bashi to explore the creative world of Persian culture at the Persian Festival, featuring live music, dance, theater and storytelling performances, and art-making workshops!  March 8th: Engage in an interactive story time and play about Norouz,​ Persian New Year, sing with us and learn few words in Farsi!  ​Interactive traditional Persian dance workshop with audience participation.  Persian music and live performance, as well as instrument introduction.  See website for schedule of other festival events.

Beatles for Little Rockers at Brooklyn Bowl (Williamsburg)
Sun March 8th 1130a.  Doors: 11a, Children’s Workshop: 1130a‐1230p.  Tickets: $10 per person (child or adult). Beatles for Little Rockers is a children’s (10 years old and under) event and all adults must be with a child to attend. Children under one are free.  “1,2,3,4, Can I have a little more?” The Rock and Roll Playhouse returns to Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday March 8th with The London Souls to perform the music of the Beatles. The London Souls’ Tash Neal and Chris St. Hilaire are set to release their new album, Here Come the Girls, next month. The best way to spring forward this Sunday is to come together as families sing, dance, and play while the acclaimed rock duo, The London Souls, play the classic tunes of our all-­‐time favorite band, The Beatles.  The Rock and Roll Playhouse is thrilled to help children 10-­‐years-­‐old and under develop their music skills and inspire families to continue a lifelong journey of music education and appreciation. The workshop will also feature a magical art activity with Charlotte Holst Douglas and a guest appearance by one of our Big Kid Rockers. All you need is love and The London Souls to have a rocking’ time!

The Pop Ups at The Jewish Museum (UES)
Sun March 8th 1130a-1230p.  $18 Adults; $13 Children 2 and up, Jewish Museum Family Members: $15 Adults; $11 Children 2 and up.  For ages 3-8y.  Catch the high energy of the Grammy-nominated dynamic duo The Pop Ups as they light up the stage with their action-packed new show, Appetite for Construction. Dance to “Costume Party” and other electro-pop sounds, and experience a multimedia artistic extravaganza filled with glitter, new puppets, live drawing, and whimsical flights of fancy.

New York Family’s Camp Fair at Berkeley Carroll School
Sun March 8th 12n-3p.  Free.  RSVP here.  Are you interested in researching summer day camps or sleepaway camps for your child?  New York Family’s Camp Fair (the largest in the city) is coming to Brooklyn!  Why are camp fairs special? In one convenient setting, parents and children can meet a big host of camp directors in person and discover a wide variety of day camps (in and out of NYC) and sleep-away campsfrom across the region.  Sponsored with the American Camp Association-NY & NJ, the fairs are free, child-friendly, and just a very helpful resource for families looking for the kind of camp that would be right for their child.

90-Second Newbery Film Festival at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Sun March 8th 2-4p.  Free.  Location: Dweck Center.  Watch movies made by kids and teens that tell the stories of Newbery-winning books in 90 seconds or less! Hosted by film festival founder and children’s author James Kennedy, with special co-host author Peter Lerangis.

LolliPops: World Tour! at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (Midtown East)
Sat March 7th 10a & 1130a & Sun March 8th 1130a & 1p.  Tickets: $17-$53.
A musical adventure comes to life as you travel the globe with the Orchestra, discovering music played on instruments from around the world! Hear guest artists playing instruments from the sitar and didgeridoo to the erhu in this brand new program.

Beats, Rhymes and Breaking at Symphony Space (UWS)
Sat-Sun March 7th-8th 11a.  Adults $21, Members $18, Kids $14, Members $12
From head spins to windmills, and from 6-step to the trusty pop and lock, prepare the kids for a unique program of jaw-dropping breakdance action with the Manzana City Crew — returning to Just Kidding after a sold-out extravaganza last season!

Pilobolus Rules! at BAM (Fort Greene)
Sat March 7th 2p & 6p & Sun March 8th 11a & 2p.  For ages 6-11y.  Tickets: $12.  Run time: 50 minutes.  Renowned dance company Pilobolus Dance Theater performs its trademark style of acrobatic dance and offers kids and parents a behind-the-scenes look at their creative process. With audience engagement and hands-on demonstrations, dancers unpack four of the company’s best-loved pieces live on stage.

The Light Princess! at The New Victory Theater
Sat-Sun March 7th-8th 12n & 5p.  For ages 5+.  70 minutes with no intermission.  Tickets start at $15 and at $10 for members.  Can a girl who can’t fall at all, fall in love? Two witty wisemen sing a story of a young princess cursed by a wicked witch to float through life indefinitely. Twirling above the stage, through the kingdom and into a magical forest, she must find a way to come back to earth by her sixteenth birthday or be doomed to defy gravity forever! Directed by Allegra Libonati, THE LIGHT PRINCESS from the acclaimed American Repertory Theater (Artistic Director, Diane Paulus) showcases the brightest talents of Harvard’s graduate acting program. Funny, romantic and cleverly choreographed to delightfully upbeat original songs, this whimsical new musical will have you giggling your way to cloud nine.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten! at various Brooklyn Public Library branches
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays until April 19th various times.  Free.  See flyer for locations and times.  No sessions April 3rd-5th.  In this special six session series, families will enjoy stories and activities designed to encourage the development of early learning skills. Exploring literacy, science, and math through music, stories, and play will help you and your child get ready for school!

New York International Children’s Film Festival 2015 (various locations)
Sat & Sun various times until Sun March 22nd.  See website for details.  Tickets: $13-$16 per screening.  Explore the world without leaving New York. New York Int’l Children’s Film Festival presents the best new film from around the world for ages 3-18. The annual Festival takes place every March at venues throughout NYC and includes countless premieres, filmmaker Q&As, workshops, parties and special preview screenings.

The Sleeping Beauty by Puppetworks (Park Slope)

Fancy Nancy The Musical at Vital Theatre Company (UWS)
Saturdays & Sundays 130p until May 5th.  Tickets $30-$40.  For ages 2-7y.  More shows during midwinter break in February.  See website for details.  Fancy Nancy returns in Vital Theatre’s hit adaptation of “The Mermaid Ballet.” Nancy and her friends are going to be performing in their very first show, “Deep Sea Dances.” When another girl wins the coveted role of the mermaid, Nancy is stuck playing a dreary, dull tree. Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted?

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p and Sat & Sun 1p until June 26th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
