Per dnainfo.com and the United Federation of Teachers website students, teachers and parents are going to join hands and make human chains to protect our schools citywide in protest over Governor Andrew Cuomo‘s education policy reform demands in the morning on Thursday March 12th.
Back in January Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $1.1 billion increase in school aid that is part of the 2015-2016 Executive Budget Proposal. An increase in school aid is positive news but the package has education policy reform demands that will be disastrous for our teachers. A change in the teacher evaluation is part of the reform and the teachers at P.S. 321 in Brooklyn wrote a letter to parents explaining how harmful it would be to schools and teachers. If 50% of a teachers evaluation is coming from standardized test scores than our children will end up being taught to take a test instead getting a proper education.
Our legislators will be voting for the proposed budget on April 1st and we need to speak up now! Show your support for our teachers and schools by emailing Governor Cuomo at gov.cuomo@chamber.state.ny.us, contact your assembly member and senator and check out the UFT website for more information on how to get involved.
Spread the word. Protect our schools and teachers. Our teachers have the right to a fair evaluation and our children deserve a quality education!
