Weekend Events for Brooklyn & NYC: March 13th-15th

Hi everyone,

Such a nice week and we found snowdrops today!  Lots of weekend events happening in Brooklyn & NYC so get out and enjoy the last weekend of winter!

This weekend we have St Patrick’s events like Annual St. Patrick’s Open Day at the Irish Arts Center, Let’s Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at Brooklyn Children’s Museum and the 40th Anniversary Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Park Slope.

Also happening this weekend is Brooklyn Center Presents: The Golden Dragon Acrobats, The Paper Bag Players: Hot Feet at The Jewish Museum, KIDS’ DAY at Lit at Lark, Danny Weinkauf and the Red Pants Band at Symphony Space, Snow White at The Heights Players, Garifuna Drumming and Arts at Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Mariachi Real de Mexico at Brooklyn Central Public Library and Pinocchio at The New Victory Theater.

Friday March 13th

Shadow Box Theatres The African Drum at PS 3 The Bedford Village School (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Friday March 13th 1030a.  Tickets $10 in advance and $15 at the door.  Our perennial favorite for African-American History Month! The African Drum is a truly magical “shadow puppet-and-people” show beloved by children for almost three decades. Come listen to the wit, wisdom and humor of four wondrous African folktales told by our drummer, our storyteller, our talented cast of performers – and See-More, our hallmark puppet. Listen to the beat of the African rhythms as they reveal the exciting musical adventure of the little girl Kijana, her animal friends, and the Zimwe (bad man) who tricks her. Learn How The Turtle Got Its Shell, How The Animals Got Their Colors, and why the Egret Flies Free all woven together within Kijana’s Tale.

Pizza Party at Pipsqueak Children’s Shoppe (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Fri March 13th 430-630p.  $10 per Kid & Escort.  Pipsqueak will be hosting a fun and delicious Craft Pizza Party!  Moms, Dads and Caregivers are welcome! Bring your little ones along and see them transform into little Pizza chefs – creating their pizza base, picking out craft ingredients, and of course putting it in the Pipsqueak pizza play-oven (because nobody wants an uncooked pizza!) While the craft pizzas are in the oven, we can all enjoy some music and playtime and work up an appetite for the real pizza and juice. Fun is guaranteed!Please RSVP (for catering purposes), but also if you are in the area and haven’t RSVP’d, you and your little chef are welcome to drop in!

Pinocchio at The New Victory Theater
Friday March 13th 7p.  See website for additional showtimes.  Tickets start at $10 for members and $15 for non-members.  Performance: 2 hours including 1 intermission.  For ages 7+.  With bold ballads, angsty anthems and a plot knotted with tabloid twists, Carlo Collodi’s classic tale about a wooden boy with a nose for trouble gets remastered in this psychedelic rock musical. Tenderly tooled by the lonely Gepetto, Pinocchio takes a walk on the wild side when the need to belong gives way to temptations of fun, fame and the dream of becoming a real boy.

Saturday March 14th

Danny Weinkauf and the Red Pants Band at Symphony Space (UWS)
Sat March 14th 11a.  Adults $21, Members $18 Kids $14, Members $12.  Danny Weinkauf, GRAMMY winner and long-time bassist for They Might Be Giants, released his first solo children’s music album, No School Today, earlier this year. With 16 memorable tunes, No School Today covers topics from marsupials to voting rights, spelling bees to the four food groups, and even a song about archaeology! Written with both children and parents in mind No School Today is filled with intelligent, fun songs for everyone! Danny has written several songs that have appeared on TMBG releases for children including “Number 2” from the Grammy-winning Here Come the 123s, “I Am A Paleontologist” from the Grammy-nominated Here Comes Science, and “Where Do They Make Balloons?” from the critically-acclaimed No!.  Danny’s song “Champion of the Spelling Bee” climbed to the Top of the Charts at Kids Place Live on Sirius XM this Spring.

Theater for Children:  Snow White at The Heights Players, Inc (Downtown Brooklyn)
Sat March 14th & 231st 12n & 2p.  Tickets $6.  Email theaterforchildren@heightsplayers.org for reservations.  A participation play for children.  Written by Hilary Goldman and Kevin McAuley and directed by Hilary Goldman.  When Princess Snow White is forced from her own kingdom by a jealous Evil Queen, she finds herself lost, confused, and surrounded by a small band of odd, though well-meaning, forest-dwelling dwarfs. Cut-off from the humdrum of royalty, Snow White must decide where she fits in and who she wants to be. But all the while, the Evil Queen grows more powerful and, well… evil, until it becomes clear that no one is safe from her malevolent reign!  Can Snow White and her new friends stop the Evil Queen and save the kingdom once and for all? Join us on this journey of friendship, bravery, and self-discovery to find out!

Mariachi Real de Mexico at Brooklyn Central Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Sat March 14th 1p.  Dweck Center.  Free.  Dressed in original costume, the Mariachi Real de Mexico presents a rich repertoire of dance and mariachi music. The mariachi tradition is a symbol of Mexican music and culture, which originated in the state of Jalisco.

Brooklyn Center Presents: The Golden Dragon Acrobats (Flatbush)
Sat March 14th 2p.  Tickets: $25/$12.50 (children 12 and under).  Representing the best of a time-honored tradition that began more than twenty five centuries ago, The Golden Dragons of The People’s Republic of China combine award-winning acrobatics, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty.

Garifuna Drumming and Arts at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Sat March 14th 2-230p & 3-330p.  FOr all ages.  Free with museum admission.  Cultural Connections Performance: Garifuna Drumming and Arts.  Dance along to music from the Garifuna community, descended from the Arawak, Carib and West African peoples who currently live throughout the Americas. This Garifuna arts program is led by Brooklyn’s own Garifuna artist, James Lovell!

Sunday March 15th
Annual St. Patrick’s Open Day at the Irish Arts Center (Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown West)
Sun March 15th 12n-4p.  Free.  For all ages!  We open our doors to celebrate Ireland’s national holiday!  This St. Patrick’s weekend explore and engage in a free day of Irish arts and culture. Learn to play the tin whistle, speak Irish with our talented instructors, discover Ireland’s diaspora through a life-size bead maze, enjoy all new art-making workshops including a fairy costume station with Teaching Artists, practice your football skills with Manhattan Gaels, sip Barry’s tea with friends old and new, and end the day with a faery dance party with DJ Púca. For all ages!

BAMkids Movie Matinees (Fort Greene)
Sunday at 2p at BAM Rose Cinemas.  Tickets: $7 for children 12 and under, $10 for adults ($9 for BAM Cinema Club Members, Free for BAM Cinema Club Movie Moguls).  March 15th The Adventures of Napkin Man.  Rated G.  For ages 4-6y.  Developed for Canadian public television, this innovative children’s series features an animated superhero called Napkin Man who helps kids to deal with negative emotions and get in touch with their feelings. Specially designed to reach children ages two to five, The Adventures of Napkin Man delights young viewers with its quirky sense of humor, while simultaneously developing their emotional intelligence.

Jewish Museum Family Members: $22 Adults; $18 Children.  The Paper Bag Players production Hot Feet will have you singing and laughing from start to finish. Featuring a world of dancing cookies, a runaway chicken, and a polar bear that springs to life in paint and song, Hot Feet presents a fun-filled array of classic sketches from the delightful imagination of this celebrated troupe of performers.

KIDS’ DAY at Lit at Lark (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Sun March 15th 3p.  Free.  Matthea Harvey, Ted Lewin, Betsy Lewin, and Melanie Hope Greenberg read picturebooks!  And now, for our first-ever very super-special KIDS’ DAY!  Bring the whole family to hear renowned children’s book authors and illustrators read their books at what will basically be the most fun storytime ever. This event will be hosted by special guest-host Harper, age 5.  Viva Snail Mail maven Melissa Lohman-Wild will have an awesome art project for the kids to do! Lark sells everything your kid likes to eat! And WORD will sell books! The event is free and all are welcome. How’s that for a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

You’re in luck at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum! Join us as we explore Irish traditions, including St. Patrick’s Day. Then create a rainbow mobile to hang at home.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten! at various Brooklyn Public Library branches
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays until April 19th various times.  Free.  See flyer for locations and times.  No sessions April 3rd-5th.  In this special six session series, families will enjoy stories and activities designed to encourage the development of early learning skills. Exploring literacy, science, and math through music, stories, and play will help you and your child get ready for school!

New York International Children’s Film Festival 2015 (various locations)
Sat & Sun various times until Sun March 22nd.  See website for details.  Tickets: $13-$16 per screening.  Explore the world without leaving New York. New York Int’l Children’s Film Festival presents the best new film from around the world for ages 3-18. The annual Festival takes place every March at venues throughout NYC and includes countless premieres, filmmaker Q&As, workshops, parties and special preview screenings.

Fancy Nancy The Musical at Vital Theatre Company (UWS)
Saturdays & Sundays 130p until May 5th.  Tickets $30-$40.  For ages 2-7y.  More shows during midwinter break in February.  See website for details.  Fancy Nancy returns in Vital Theatre’s hit adaptation of “The Mermaid Ballet.” Nancy and her friends are going to be performing in their very first show, “Deep Sea Dances.” When another girl wins the coveted role of the mermaid, Nancy is stuck playing a dreary, dull tree. Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted?

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p and Sat & Sun 1p until June 26th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
