Weekend Events in Brooklyn & NYC: March 20th-22nd

The first weekend of Spring is here and we have a lot of events happening in Brooklyn & NYC!

This weekend the St Patrick’s celebrations continue with the Niall O’Leary Irish Dance Troupe at the Central Brooklyn Public Library and the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  Also happening this weekend is a Spring Equinox Celebration at Grand Army Plaza, the Opening Day Macy’s Flower Show 2015: Art in Bloom, The Worlds Collide Convention 2015 at the Scholastic Store, Yellow Sneaker at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Rolie Polie Guacamole at Jalopy Theatre, Yo Re Mi: Imagination Celebration! at Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the PS 321 Spring Carnival and Bindlestiff Cavalcade of Youth at Sideshows by the Seashore.

Friday March 20th

Babble at The New Victory Theater
Friday March 20th 10a.  See website for additional times.  For ages 4m-18m.  Performance: 40 minutes with no intermission.  Includes post-show interaction.  Member tickets $10 and full price tickets start at $15.  Dive into the aquatic wonderland of BABBLE when you enter “the bubble,” a unique and intimate performance space designed to gently surround you and your baby with new shapes and sounds. To delight and astonish your little ones, soothing seascapes and schools of fish are projected all around while four singers provide a lullaby of vocal harmonies. Developed in close creative consultation with nursery schools and language specialists in Belfast, this theatrical experience will have your baby babbling and giggling along.

Stomp, Clap & Sing: Little Miss Ann & Suzi Shelton at the Brooklyn Public Library (Carroll Gardens)
Friday March 20th 11a-12n.  Free.  At this upbeat, interactive family concert, kids will experience the live music of Little Miss Ann, one of Chicago’s “Most Influential Kids Musicians,” as voted by the readers of Time Out Chicago. Little Miss Ann’s infectious songs, including the ones from her latest kids CD, “Follow Me” promote messages strength, individuality, and love. Little Miss Ann will be joined by award winning local kindie favorite, Suzi Shelton, who is no stranger to BPL’s musical programs. Your family is sure to sing and dance along with this dynamic duo.

Singalong with Jarrod at Greenlight Bookstore (Fort Greene)
Fri March 20th 230-3p.  Free.  Greenlight is delighted to offer a weekday singalong/story time event each month on the 3rd Friday for babies and toddlers! Join us in the kids section for favorite songs and stories for the littlest booklovers, led by Greenlight bookseller Jarrod and his trusty guitar.

Eggs on End: Standing on Ceremony at Grand Army Plaza
Friday March 20th 615p.  Free.  40th Annual World Famous Spring Equinox Celebration.  The equinox moment: eggsactly 6:45pm, signals the official start of spring. At this time, the sun crosses the equator into the Northern Hemisphere and it is possible to stand an egg up on its end.  A basket of 360 eggs will be provided for the eggshilarating standing ceremony. After the ceremony, there will be a special performance by Batala NYC, an all-women Afro-Brazilian Samba Reggae percussion band.  This is a family-friendly event.

Saturday March 21st

PS 321 Spring Carnival (Park Slope)
Saturday March 21st 10a–4p.  Admission is free, and ticket sales benefit P.S. 321.  Join us for games, face painting, food, crafts, an outdoor bouncy castles/obstacle courses, live music and a huge used book sale and much more!

Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower  at Symphony Space (UWS)
Sat March 21st 11a.  Adults $26, Members $22, Kids $16, Members $14.  Always one of the most anticipated shows of the season, Elizabeth Mitchell and her family band create gentle, heartfelt music that transfixes audiences of all ages with homespun renditions of great songs by Woody Guthrie, Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground, Vashti Bunyan, Gillian Welch and more. The quiet sweetness and intimacy of her concerts cement her as an icon whose music will be remembered for years to come.  ncluding special guests Simi Stone, M Shanghai String Band, and Morgan O’Kane.

Rolie Polie Guacamole at Jalopy Theatre (Red Hook)
Sat March 21st show starts at 1130a.  Tickets: $5 for kids, $10 for adults, $25 for families, kids under 2 are free.  Rolie Polie Guacamole is a Brooklyn-based jam band playing original songs. Frank Gallo and Andrew Tuzhilin created Rolie Polie Guacamole in late 2006, and have since released two albums. The boys teach singing and dancing classes in numerous locations around Brooklyn. Their new video is in claymation, and they have created their first picture book.

Niall O’Leary Irish Dance Troupe at the Central Brooklyn Public Library
Sat March 21st 1-2p.  Free.  At the Dweck Center.  A performance by Niall O’Leary School of Irish Dance with live music, featuring exciting traditional and contemporary Irish dance moves!
The Worlds Collide Convention 2015 at the Scholastic Store (SOHO)
Saturday March 21st 1-4p.  Free.  For ages 8+.  An exciting celebration of Scholastic’s multiplatform publishing programs The 39 Clues, Spirit Animals, Infinity Ring, and TombQuest.  Meet bestselling authors Gordan Korman, Peter Lerangis, Jennifer A. Sunday March 22nd

Yellow Sneaker at the Museum of Jewish Heritage (Battery Park)
Sunday March 22nd 1030a.  Free/Drop in.  Playful programs about holidays and traditions for downtown Jewish and interfaith families with kids 0-3.  Join the musical group Yellow Sneaker and their puppet pals for programs that nurture family bonds and bridge connections to Jewish life and traditions. Every concert will focus on a different Jewish holiday or value including: caring for the environment, friendship, and love and kindness. Families, musicians, and puppets will sing and learn together as a welcoming community. Everyone is welcome.

Galli Theather Company of NY: Cinderella at Learn And Explore (Coney Island)
Sunday March 22nd 1030a-12n.  Tickets: $8 adults, $4 kids.  For ages 3+.  Learn And Explore is excited to announce a Special Performance of Cinderella by the amazing Galli Theather Company of NY.  Please join us as we present this timeless classic.  At the end of the show, we will hold a 15 minute Actor’s Workshop where children will participate in a warm up exercise and act out the characters from the show!  It will be a fantastic experience for both children and adults!

Opening Day Macy’s Flower Show 2015: Art in Bloom
Sunday March 22nd11a-830p and ongoing various times until Saturday April 4th. See website for schedule of events.  Macy’s Herald Square unveils its latest work of art in floral beauty, with the opening of the iconic store’s 41st annual Flower Show. Inspired by the great works of fine art, Art in Bloom is a masterpiece in design, structure, texture and color. Taking root on the Main Floor and beyond are eight intoxicating garden genres: Abstract; Pop Art; Impressionist; Art Nouveau; Contemporary; Surrealism; Renaissance and Portrait Gallery. This new approach to this time honored, much anticipated event will invigorate the senses and appeal to every palette. Sunday March 22nd is Family Fun Day- Kids on 7 at 1pm Macy’s encourages customers to bring the whole family out for an afternoon of fun, including arts and crafts, face painting and balloon twisting. Also, there will be a special presentation of Peppa Pig and the Muddy Puddles as well as a dance clinic with the world-famous Rockettes as they teach steps from their new show at Radio City Music Hall®, the New York Spring Spectacular™.

Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Sunday March 22nd 1p.  Free.  The parade will run along 3rd Avenue:  Starting at Marine Avenue/3rd Ave down to 67st Street.

Bindlestiff Cavalcade of Youth at Sideshows by the Seashore (Coney Island)
Sunday March 22nd 4p  Tickets: $15 adults & $10 for youth under 21.  See the circus stars of tomorrow!  Bindlestiff Family Cirkus and Playful Productions present a special showcase for young variety performers, ranging from amateurs to world-class professionals. Juvenile jugglers, diminutive dancers, adolescent acrobats and a host of other moppets and mummers present a full show of vernal vaudeville. Acts range from debuting amateurs to world-class champion performers. All the acts are under the age of 21, but audiences of all ages will love this special show.

Yo Re Mi: Imagination Celebration! at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Sat-Sun March 21st-22nd 2p.  For all ages.  Free with museum admission.  Join Yo Re Mi for a wild ride around the world and beyond using our bodies, voices and imaginations! Through a unique combination of yoga and music, we will journey to exciting destinations, learning about animals, cultures and languages along our way. No yoga experience required.

Subway Studio at New York Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Sat-Sun March 21st-22nd & March 28th-29th 130-215p.  For ages 7+.  Free with museum admission.  After exploring the sculptures, mosaics and contemporary art that decorate the city’s subway stations, teacking artist Katie Taylor will help us image and create our own subway installations that tell the story of your favorite destination.

Pinocchio at The New Victory Theater
Sat March 21st 2p & 7p & Sun March 22nd 12p & 5p.  Tickets start at $10 for members and $15 for non-members.  Performance: 2 hours including 1 intermission.  For ages 7+.  With bold ballads, angsty anthems and a plot knotted with tabloid twists, Carlo Collodi’s classic tale about a wooden boy with a nose for trouble gets remastered in this psychedelic rock musical. Tenderly tooled by the lonely Gepetto, Pinocchio takes a walk on the wild side when the need to belong gives way to temptations of fun, fame and the dream of becoming a real boy.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten! at various Brooklyn Public Library branches
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays until April 19th various times.  Free.  See flyer for locations and times.  No sessions April 3rd-5th.  In this special six session series, families will enjoy stories and activities designed to encourage the development of early learning skills. Exploring literacy, science, and math through music, stories, and play will help you and your child get ready for school!

Camp Kappawanna at Linda Gross Theater (Chelsea)
Saturdays & Sundays 1030a March 21st-April 12th.  See website for additional showtimes during Spring Break).  Tickets: $20 adult & $15 kid.  A new musical with music & lyrics by Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb!  Following the misadventures of 12-year old Jennifer Jenkins, an awkward and adorable 12-year-old kid, Camp Kappawanna portrays the fear and excitement of leaving home for the first time. This lighthearted musical, inspired by Lisa Loeb’s own nostalgic summer camp memories, has an acoustic sound that will take you back to nights spent around the camp fire.

New York International Children’s Film Festival 2015 (various locations)
Sat & Sun various times until Sun March 22nd.  See website for details.  Tickets: $13-$16 per screening.  Explore the world without leaving New York. New York Int’l Children’s Film Festival presents the best new film from around the world for ages 3-18. The annual Festival takes place every March at venues throughout NYC and includes countless premieres, filmmaker Q&As, workshops, parties and special preview screenings.

The Sleeping Beauty by Puppetworks (Park Slope)

Fancy Nancy The Musical at Vital Theatre Company (UWS)
Saturdays & Sundays 130p until May 5th.  Tickets $30-$40.  For ages 2-7y.  More shows during midwinter break in February.  See website for details.  Fancy Nancy returns in Vital Theatre’s hit adaptation of “The Mermaid Ballet.” Nancy and her friends are going to be performing in their very first show, “Deep Sea Dances.” When another girl wins the coveted role of the mermaid, Nancy is stuck playing a dreary, dull tree. Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted?

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p and Sat & Sun 1p until June 26th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
