Weekday Events in Brooklyn & NYC: March 30th-April 2nd

Hi everyone,

April is almost here and I will be fine with April showers since that means it is warm!

This week try a Free Music Together® demo classes at The Brooklyn Dance Center, Demo Day at Juguemos a Cantar and a Treasure Trunk Theatre Trial Class at Court Tree Collective.  Also happening is a jTot Passover Sensory Experience, Stomp, Clap and Sing with Mil’s Trills at the Central Brooklyn Public Library, a BK Block Party Easter Egg Hunt at Albee Square, Meet the Rockettes! at The Shops at Columbus Circle and The Curious Commuter Train Party at the New York Transit Museum.

Monday March 30th

Free Music Together® demo class at The Brooklyn Dance Center
Monday March 30th 1115a.  Free. Tam Tam invites you to join us for a demonstration class of the Music Together® curriculum for parents and their children aged birth-kindergarten. Come sing, play, laugh, and dance with us and find out why Music Together is beloved by kids and families all over the world! You will learn how you can stimulate your child musically, recognize musical behaviors and milestones, and have fun while bonding with your child! Music Together’s program is research-based and developmentally appropriate. Family Movie at the Brooklyn Public Library (Sunset Park)
Monday March 30th 330-530p.  Free.  The movie will be shown in the basement.  On March 30 at 3:30 PM, we will show the family movie Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Treasure Trunk Theatre Trial Class at Court Tree Collective (Carroll Gardens)
Monday March 30th 330-425p.  $5.  Pre-registration required, please fill out the registration here (Please pay $5 in cash on day of the class).  For ages 3-5y.  This is a drop off class.  In this class, children will create and explore a dramatic adventure that begins with the opening of the treasure trunk.  The contents of the trunk provide the spark that inspires a story that we will create that day using our voices, bodies, and imaginations.  Children will learn how to band together as an ensemble as we play all of the parts in our session-long story.  This class provides a great way for children to begin incorporating dramatic arts into story telling.

Tuesday March 31st

Stomp, Clap and Sing with Mil’s Trills at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army)
Tuesday 11a-12n.  Free.  Mil’s Trills is a children’s music project led by Amelia Robinson that invites families to celebrate the community through original tunes and a cast of musical guests. A highly interactive experience, audiences are encouraged to be part of the show and discover a world of instruments.

jTot Passover Sensory Experience
Tuesday March 31st 1130a.  Free.  Crunchy matzah, smooth charoset apples and other seder plate components.  Plus trade great passover recipes with the moms. Nannies are welcome. Email info@jtot.org for location and more info.
Meet the Rockettes! at The Shops at Columbus Circle
Tuesday March 31st 1230-230p.  Free. Don’t miss your chance to meet two of the world-famous Rockettes in person! Bring the family to the 2nd floor of Time Warner Center on Tuesday!

Demo Day at Juguemos a Cantar (Park Slope)
Wednesday April 1st 10a-12n.  Free.  Maximum of two demo classes per child. Pre-registration required.  To register email info@juguemos.org  10:30am – Music & Movement, 11:00am – Spanish Immersion and 11:30am – Get Messy Art

A Taste of Fifth at The Grand Prospect Hall (South Slope)
Wednesday April 1st 630-930p.  Adult event. Tickets are $55 online ($60 at door) with $20 of every ticket going to the local charity of your choice!  Purchase tickets here.  Celebrate Fifth Avenue’s acclaimed destination restaurants and legendary watering holes at  A Taste Of Fifth.  Buying a ticket not only allows you to sample all the savory offerings from our many local restaurants and bars (complementary wine & beer), but you’ll also be benefiting many of our local charities.  A Taste of Fifth is a great opportunity to dance the night away or simply enjoy the company of friends and neighbors and catch up on the latest doings on the greatest avenue in the Slope.  See website for participant information.

Free Postpartum Doula Event at LARK (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Wednesday April 1st 7p.  Free Meet & Greet with Local Postpartum Doulas Meema Spadola, Grace Veras Sealy, Amber Star-Merkens & Ashley Brichter.  Whether you’re pregnant or adopting; having your first child, your second or more; expecting a singleton or multiples; partnered or single; breastfeeding or not… support from a postpartum doula can help make the arrival of your new baby (or babies) easier and give you confidence!  Come to a free “meet the postpartum doula” event at LARK and find out how a postpartum doula can support your growing family. You’ll get to hear from four local postpartum doulas and ask them any questions you might have about the “4th trimester”– those first three months after a baby is born.

BK Block Party Easter Egg Hunt at Albee Square (Downtown Brooklyn)
Thursday April 2nd 10-11a.  Free. We’ll be kicking off our Brooklyn Kids Block Party early this year with our annual Easter festivities at Albee Square. Join us for a coloring station, Face Painting by Shelly, creations from Balloonasaurus Rex, and music from 10am to 11am. The Easter Egg Hunt will take place at 10:45am.  Location: Albee Square Corner of Fulton and Bond St

Children’s Story Time at P.S. Bookshop (DUMBO)
Thursdays 4-5p.  $5/family.  Dumbo’s popular play date!  An hour of stories, songs & discussions of current affiars (coverting topics such as” what’s our favorite food?  how do we feel about going to bed on time?  younger siblings – are they necessary?  are we potty trained or not yet? and other pressing matters).  RSVP by phone (718 222 3340) or here to help us plan for the ages and number of children attending.

The Curious Commuter Train Party at the New York Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Thursday April 2nd 6-8p.  $7 for adults/$5 for seniors and children ages 2 -17.  Free for Museum Members.  For all ages!  Advance registration available here.  Come meet NYC Family Ambassador Curious George at a special evening party at the New York Transit Museum. George loves to travel, explore and discover how things work, just like any New York City subway kid! Go on a subway safari scavenger hunt, assemble a model train, and ticker with electrical circuits, learning about the technology and science of the city’s transportation system.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Mon-Thu now until May 29th 330-5p.  For ages 0-3y.  $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 packs also available.  Take Refuge at Bija Playgroup When the Weather Turns!  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija​. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.

M-F 9a-12n & 2-5p now until Arpil 24th.  $10 per visit / Sibling $2 per visit.  Play passes also available.  Drop in play space with activities: Mon 10a Let’s Paint, Tue 10a Arts & Crafts & 4p Sing Along with Ale, Wed 1030a Sing with Tucker, Thu 1030a Sing with Ale, Fri 1030a Sing with Damian.  Also Play Space hours 9a-12n M, W & F South Slope location.  See website for more information.

WEE Arts Drop-in Session at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (South Village)
M-F 1045a-12p, $25 per family ($20 for members).  Want to stay longer? General admission is just $6 per person after drop-in.  Music time! Story time! Art time! Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session before we open our doors to the public. Parent and/or caregivers are required to join and we encourage family collaboration throughout the class. No sign up required.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p,  Sat & Sun 1p until June 28th.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.

Macy’s Flower Show 2015: Art in Bloom
Ongoing at various times until Saturday April 4th. Free.  See website for schedule of events.  Macy’s Herald Square unveils its latest work of art in floral beauty, with the opening of the iconic store’s 41st annual Flower Show. Inspired by the great works of fine art, Art in Bloom is a masterpiece in design, structure, texture and color. Taking root on the Main Floor and beyond are eight intoxicating garden genres: Abstract; Pop Art; Impressionist; Art Nouveau; Contemporary; Surrealism; Renaissance and Portrait Gallery. This new approach to this time honored, much anticipated event will invigorate the senses and appeal to every palette.
