What to Do With Your Old Breast Pump? Medela Recycles and Donates!

Have you wondered what you can do with your breast pump when you no longer need it? Medela has created Medela Recycles, a program designed to allow more moms the opportunity to breastfeed—supported by the recycling of used Medela personal-use electric breast pumps.

Medela created this program in response to a petition on change.org. A concerned, eco-conscious mom started a petition to encourage Medela to develop a system to allow mothers to dispose of their old pumps to keep them out of landfills. It worked! The Medela Recycles program offers moms a solution to properly recycle their breastpump, and in turn help other moms provide the best nourishment they can to their babies.

Medela Recycles is quite a remarkable campaign in that every pump recycled through the program will go toward the donation of two hospital-grade pumps and supplies to Ronald McDonald House Charities across the country.

Each month, an RMHC House will receive a donation of two Symphony Preemie+ Breastpumps thanks to the mothers that are recycling their old pumps through Medela Recycles. The mothers who are parting with their pumps are providing a new mother with a baby in the NICU, the equipment she needs to continue to provide breastmilk for her baby. This campaign is a wonderful cycle to mark the end of one woman’s breastfeeding journey as another mother is beginning hers.

The simple act of recycling an old breast pump through Medela Recycles provides mothers with peace of mind knowing that their pump will be recycled and that they are also providing much-needed support to another mother. To date, there have been over 700 pumps recycled as Medela strives to meet a goal of 12,000 recycled pumps this year.
