Weekend Events in Brooklyn & NYC: June 19th-21st

Father’s Day and the first day of the official summer is this weekend!  There are lots of fun events happening in Brooklyn & NYC this weekend.

This weekend go listen to Moozika at the FAB Friday Kids Concert at Putnam Triangle Plaza, get a Taste of Tinkergarten and enjoy the New York Philharmonic in Prospect Park.  Bring the kids to The Coney Island Mermaid Parade, celebrate It’s a Party on Wheels! at the NY Transit Museum, make art at The Art Yard in Madison Square Park, enjoy Adventures NYC in Central Park, sing, dance and draw at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier Kids, enjoy Suzi Shelton’s Backyard Show at Norman & Jules Backyard and the Family Performance Festival in Central Park.

Also happening this weekend is the Make Music New York with events all over NYC like the GoGirlsMusic Edition at Old Stone House/JJ Byrne and SummerStage Family Day with Laurie Berkner, Something Positive, Brooklyn United Marching Band in the Herbert Von King Park.

Friday June 19th

FAB Friday Kids Concert at Putnam Triangle Plaza (Clinton Hill)
Friday June 19th 10-11a.  Join FAB for the FAB Friday Kids Concert featuring Moozika!  Moozika at the upcoming FAB Friday Kid’s Concert is sure to be an interactive hour for children and families. Our friend Jesse Goldman promotes children’s musicality and development through singing, dancing, and playing instruments (shakers, bells, drums, and more.)

Taste of Tinkergarten in Prospect Park
Friday June 19th 330-445p.  Free trial.  For ages 18m-5y.  Location: Third Street entrance in Park Slope.  Tinkergarten classes are based on a progressive curriculum comprised of our blueprint activities. The curriculum for each class is tailored to the ages and prior knowledge of kids, and are appropriate for the geographic region and season of the class. Leaders further tailor classes to meet the needs of the individuals and artfully facilitate the activity to maximize the fun and the learning for all involved. Below is a sampling of the types of activities to expect in this class.  Come join us for a sample of what Tinkergarten class is all about. You’ll get to experience the flow of a class and a sample of the fun learning activities we enjoy each week. New York Philharmonic: Parks 50 in Prospect Park
Friday June 19th 630-10p.  Free.  Location: Long Meadow Ballfields.  Join the New York Philharmonic to celebrate their 50th summer of free outdoor programming. Charles Dutoit leads the Orchestra in Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture; Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No. 3, with Renaud Capuçon as soloist; Stravinsky’s Petrushka (1911 version); and Ravel’s La Valse. The Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir will open the night as part of Share the Stage, a program that invites local musicians to play before the Philharmonic performance in their home boroughs. The performance will be followed by fireworks.

Movies Under the Stars – Caribbean Culture Jam: Film, Fun & Fete: Selma in the Jackie Robinson Playground
Friday June 19th 630-1030p.  Free.  Join Senator Jesse Hamilton and co-hosts for Movies Under the Stars: Caribbean Culture Jam: Film, Fun & Fete. Enjoy Caribbean Carnival headpiece-making for kids and a Caribbean dance party with Brooklyn’s own DJ English, followed by a showing of the movie “Selma” (Rated PG-13, Directed by Ava DuVerney, Copyright Paramount Pictures).  This event is free and open to the public. We encourage you to come early and bring your own blankets and chairs, as seating is first come, first served. Saturday June 20th

It’s a Party on Wheels! at the NY Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturday June 20th 9a-11a.  Tickets: Adult $65, child $40, Family 4 pack $175.  You’ll have the whole Transit Museum to yourself for this family fundraiser celebrating the BMT and supporting Museum educational programs!  Transit fans of all ages will have the time of their lives with: Crafts and Activities ** Music and Dancing ** Breakfast (with CAKE!) ** Special Guests!  RIDE ON OUR VINTAGE D-TYPE TRIPLEX TRAIN from the 1920s from our platform to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Station and back – as many times as you like!  Ticket purchases are tax-deductible beyond $25 per ticket.  Babies under 2 are free. The Art Yard in Madison Square Park (Flatiron)
Saturday mornings 9a-12n from June 20th-August 22nd.  Free.  For ages 1-12y.   Adult supervision is required and promptness is encouraged.  Learn a new skill and spark your creativity at The Art Yard, the new Mad. Sq. Kids workshop series designed for kids aged 1-12.  Join Mad. Sq. Kids as we host some of the best independent visual and performing artists.  June 20th: Fata Morgana Family Art Workshop

Adventures NYC in Central Park
Saturday June 20th 11a-530p.  Free.  Rain or shine.  Location: the Bandshell area (enter at 72nd St.).  Join NYC Parks for Adventures NYC, and discover adventure right here in your own backyard! Get ready to hike, bike, climb and paddle as we celebrate NYC Parks and the great outdoors. This year’s event has a new twist – it will feature the 30th Anniversary of the Stihl Timbersports Competition!.  On Saturday, June 20, come to Central Park and enjoy a day of outdoor adventure – for FREE! Activities will include: log-rolling, kayaking, rock climbing, wheelchair basketball, fishing demondstrations, outdoor gear exhibits, free bike valet parking & fitness classes with Shape Up NYC.  Please note that lines are subject to close early to ensure that the event ends at 530p.  Certain activities will require a waiver, which will be provided at the event for participants to sign. Participants under the age of 18 must have a legal guardian present to sign the waiver.  Additionally, children must be at least 5 years of age to participate in kayaking.

The New York Aquarium presents: Mystery of the Deep – Sharks! at the Windsor Terrace Brookyn Public Library
Saturday June 30th 1130a-1230p.  Free.  Explore the amazing world of sharks without getting your feet wet. Sharks have a myriad of myths and tales associated with them; but what is the real story behind these amazing animals that have been around long before dinosaurs existed? Satisfy your curiosity about these predators as we sink our teeth into the wonders of sharks and discover why healthy oceans need sharks. Take part in interactive activities including trivia, observations and examination of shark artifacts, and bust some myths about these amazing fish!  This event will also be happening at the Park Slope Brooklyn Public Library at 1p June 20th and other branches this month.  See the calendar for more information.

The Mermaid Parade (Coney Island)
Sat June 20th 1p.  Free.  The Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the nation. A celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside, it showcases over 1,500 creative individuals from all over the five boroughs and beyond, opening the summer with incredible art, entrepreneurial spirit and community pride. The parade highlights Coney Island Pageantry based on a century of many Coney parades, celebrates the artistic vision of the masses, and ensures that the summer season is a success by bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the amusement area in a single day.  See website for parade route information.  Online registration has ended.  Day-of-parade – You may still register day of (cash only) at Surf Avenue and West 21st Street from 10am until 1pm.

Sunday June 21st
Suzi Shelton Backyard Show at Norman & Jules Backyard (Park Slope)
Sunday June 21st 11a.  Tickets: $20 per child – grown ups free.  Tickets in store and at the door.  Call for info: 347-9873323.
Celebrate SPRING at Norman & Jules’s Magical Outdoor Playspace with award-winning and local kindie favorite Suzi Shelton as she returns to her favorite toy shop to perform a series of solo shows with songs from her latest release “Smile in My Heart.”  Perfect for families with kids ages 0-7 years old.  Suzi will be playing on the third Sunday of every month from May-October 2015. Woo hoo!

Pier Kids in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Sundays 11a-1p until August 9th.  Free.  Sing, Act, Dance, and Draw! The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s eight week children’s series encompasses culture, science, and literature. The program draws on a wealth of family musicians and cultural groups like the Central Park Zoo’s Wildlife Theater and the Puppetmobile, as well as notable Brooklyn children’s authors to create entertaining and educational events. Activities vary each week and are accompanied by arts and crafts and an outdoor pop-up reading room from the Uni Project. The program is followed by art activities from Private Picassos at 12 pm and an outdoor pop-up reading room from the Uni Project.  Location: Pier 6 lawn.  Jun 21st:   Robbi K featuring Bakithi Kumalo

Family Performance Festival in Central Park (UWS)
Starting Sunday June 21st at 12n and every Sunday until September 6th.  Programs are free and between 60-90 minutes long.  Each summer, the Conservancy hosts a series of eco-education and multicultural performances for the whole family to enjoy.  This year’s Family Performance Festival is chock-a-block full of fun and learning through music, storytelling, Park adventures, puppetry, and more!  Programs happen near the most natural playground, the Great Hill  (located inside the Park near West 106th Street). Pack a picnic, grab your blanket, and get ready to discover Central Park in a whole new way!  RSVP to let us know you’re coming; all ages welcome. Make Music New York 2015 – GoGirlsMusic Edition at Old Stone House/JJ Byrne Park (Park Slope)
Sunday June 21st 1-3p.  Get ready for another Make Music New York with the GoGirls in Park Slope, Brooklyn!  Another wonderful line-up this year, complete with massive amounts of sunscreen.  1pm: Deb Cavanaugh, 1:30pm Lucy Kalantari, 2:00pm Queen Esther, 2:30pm rorie kelly.  Now in its ninth year, Make Music New York, “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), is a unique festival of 1,000+ free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City, all on June 21st, the first day of summer. MMNY takes place simultaneously with similar festivities in more than 700 cities around the world – a global celebration of music making.  From 10 in the morning to 10 at night, musicians of all ages, creeds, and musical persuasions – from hip hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock – perform on streets, sidewalks, stoops, plazas, cemeteries, parks and gardens. From high school bands to marquee names, MMNY is open to anyone who wants to take part, enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend.  See the website for a full listing of all the events.

SummerStage Family Day: Laurie Berkner, Something Positive, Brooklyn United Marching Band in Herbert Von King Park (Bed Stuy)
Sunday June 21st 4-7p.  Free.  Herbert Von King Park is located Marcy Ave., Tompkins Ave., bet. Greene Ave. and Lafayette Ave.  Come out and see best-selling, award-winning children’s musician Laurie Berkner has been a longtime fixture on TV’s Nick Jr. and Sprout channels.  Something Positive Inc. is the premier Afro-Caribbean performing arts and education ensemble in the United States dedicated to the art and culture of the African Diaspora and its cross-cultural influences.  The Brooklyn United Marching Band is a community-based organization that serves New York City youth. As an art form, marching band combines the elements of musicianship and pageantry and allows each student to participate in an all-encompassing and life changing activity.

Celebrate Father’s Day at the Chidlren’s Museum of the Arts (SOHO)
Friday June 19th 12n-6p, Saturday-Sunday June 20th-June 21st 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.  Bring dad to CMA for a day of art-making fun for the whole family! Or leave dad at home and surprise him with a unique handmade gift! Throughout the week of June 15-22, create Family Photo Albums and DIY Ties in the Fine Arts Studio, dot marker cards in the WEE Arts Studio, busts of dad at the Clay Bar, “If I Were a Dad…” Found Object Portrait Animation, and more!  Don’t Forget: All dads receive free admission on Father’s Day, June 21!

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Every Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7) (NO Programming Saturday, July 4).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

Pinkalicious, The Musical at Culture Project’s Lynn Redgrave Theater
Saturdays & Sundays 1p until August 30th.  Tickets: $36.50.  For ages 2 to 7y.  Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament.

The Kid’s Corner is a weekend program that offers free, creative workshops and crafts that teach environmentalism, wellness and community to neighborhood kids.  June 20th & 21st- Cardboard Ties! Let your dad know how much he rocks by making him a custom tie.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Tue–Fri 1030a & 12p, Wed 1030a, 12p & 230p and Sat & Sun 1p until June 26th.  See website for additional show times this summer.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
