Weekend Events in Brooklyn & NYC: June 26th-28th

Hi everyone

School is over for NYC public schools tomorrow so that means the NYC public pools open this weekend!

In addition to heading to the pools this weekend you can also enjoy FAB Friday Kid Activities at Fowler Square, ride trains at the Celebrating 100 years of the BMT! at the Brighton Beach Station, rejoice in Coney Island’s Schools Out Celebration, dance with They Might Be Giants at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at the Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee, have a ball at the Puppetry Arts Festival of Brooklyn and check out the Central Park Family Picnic.

Also happening this weekend is L.A.R.D Dog & The Band of Shy at the Jalopy Theatre, Magmanus at Brooklyn Bridge Park, CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island, Family Performance Festival in Central Park, Superhero Weekend at Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Brick Fest Live at the New York Hall of Science.

School’s Out Celebration (Coney Island)
Saturday June 27th 11a-7p.  Free.  School’s Out and it’s time for fun! Join us for the biggest School’s Out bash in Brooklyn! Luna Park has partnered with 92.3 AMP Radio to provide a FREE emerging artist concert with JAKE MILLER on West 10 Street, hosted by the Shoboy in the Morning show.  In addition to the FREE concert there will be a day of activities with Super Soccer Stars, the Girl Scouts of Western New York, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more. The YMCA will be here offering FREE face painting and a quick Zumba class, followed by a few special performances! The FUN begins at 11am! Shoboy and Nina from mornings will be on-site along with AMP’s weeknight host & Coney Island’s own DJ Toro, spinning the latest hits from 5pm-7pm.  Don’t forget to bring your report cards for a chance to receive up 20 FREE ride credits for you good grades!

Central Park Family Picnic
Saturday June 27th 12n-3p.  Free.  You and your family are invited to kick off summer in Central Park!  Bring a picnic for a relaxing summer afternoon filled with family-friendly Central Park activities: play, discover, enjoy, and give back! You can enjoy live music, lawn games, fishing, and park exploration activities for the whole family.  This fun-filled day kicks off at 12:00 p.m. with the Mils Trills Band playing entertaining summertime songs, and a musical storytelling performance by Play Me a Story.  See the website for all the event details.

L.A.R.D Dog & The Band of Shy at the Jalopy Theatre (Carroll Gardens/Red Hook)
Saturday June 27th.  Show starts at 1p.  Free.  Are you ready for a HOO-LA-LEE? Join us for an all-ages musical extravaganza that promises to entertain adults and kids alike. Hollywood actor extraordinaire Mark Ruffalo declares, “it’s one of the most original shows I’ve seen in years” and entertainment critic Jonathan Fox raves, “this kind of fun is unstoppable!” Lard Dog and his 6-piece Band of Shy invite you to their unique audio-visual universe. Come play along and slurp the noodle of life! After all, L.ife is A R.eal D.ream.

Parallel Exit: MOVE IT! at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army)
Saturday June 27th 1-3p.  Free.  Location: Dweck Center. Parallel Exit, the three time Drama Desk Award nominee for Unique Theatrical Event, returns to Brooklyn Public Library for MOVE IT! — a free, family-friendly opportunity to see some of New York’s most exciting physical theatre artists.  This special afternoon show promises to exhilarate audiences through inventive storytelling rooted in imaginative and whimsical stagecraft.  Part of Parallel Exit’s yearlong performance series, MOVE IT! invites audiences to experience the diversity and excitement of work in dance-theatre, mime, puppetry, clown, and circus.  It is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.

Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee Series at the Film Forum (South Village)

Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it. Thank you.” Reclusive candyman Willy Wonka is ready to open the doors of his magical factory – cost of admission: one golden ticket. Hidden in the wrapping of his famous candy bars, children across the world clamor for one of just five tickets, and as the winners trickle in, no one is more surprised than poor boy Charlie Bucket. But what happens when Wonka’s “world of pure imagination” is more than what they bargained for? Scripted by Roald Dahl (adapting his own book), and starring Gene Wilder in his most iconic role. Pier Kids in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Sundays June 28th 11a-1p.  Free.  Sing, Act, Dance, and Draw! The Central Park Zoo presents Wildlife Theater: Polar Opposites at this week’s Pier Kids!  Antarctica and the Arctic Circle are the two ends of the world. They look and feel the same, but very different types of animals call these icy lands home. Children will explore the similarities and differences through two shows, “Polar Bear and the Beat” and “A Penguin State of Mind.”  The program is followed by art activities from Private Picassos at 12 pm and an outdoor pop-up reading room from the Uni Project.  Pier Kids is a weekly program until August 9th.  See the website for more information.

Sing Along with Amy Miles at ELK Cafe (Windsor Terrace)
Sundays 11-1145a.  $8/family.  Come sing and dance with Amy Miles! Drop-in sing along. You may have seen Amy on PBS kids Lomax the Hound of Music, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, or Amy’s own web series Meow Meow Music. Amy is a working composer and performer for adults and children. From performing with They Might Be Giants, writing music for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and being a full time Momma herself, Amy stays busy. Playing original and well known songs on guitar, ukulele, and percussive things, singing stories with puppets and bubbles, Amy brings her quirky, country rock and casual style to the sing along arena.

Family Performance Festival in Central Park (UWS)
Sundays at 12n until September 6th.  Programs are free and between 60-90 minutes long.  Each summer, the Conservancy hosts a series of eco-education and multicultural performances for the whole family to enjoy.  This year’s Family Performance Festival is chock-a-block full of fun and learning through music, storytelling, Park adventures, puppetry, and more!  Programs happen near the most natural playground, the Great Hill  (located inside the Park near West 106th Street). Pack a picnic, grab your blanket, and get ready to discover Central Park in a whole new way!  RSVP to let us know you’re coming; all ages welcome. They Might Be Giants at the Music Hall of Williamsburg
Sunday June 28th 1230p & 330p.  Tickets $25 or $90 family 4 pack.  A They Might Be Giants show for the family!  Like unicorns, a They Might Be Giants kids show is a magical and very rare thing. Designed to not freak out even the smallest kids—with low volume, a bit of house lights to keep everyone safe from the dark, and stroller parking—this show is designed to be all fun and no stress. Of course it includes all the special effects that will be remembered forever. Sets run just under an hour. Bring the whole family!

Magmanus at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Saturday-Sunday June 27th-28th 4p & 7p.  Free.  Location: Harbor View Lawn.  Magmanus Company is a Swedish circus company founded in 2009 by the Franco-Norwegian duo Manu Tiger and Magnus Bjoru. With a vision to spread happiness and inspire audiences to follow their dreams, Magmanus combines impressive circus skills, humor and audience interaction to present a show you’ll never forget!  In their current show, audiences will meet an angry, small but passionate acrobat and a naive, gigantic yet so lovable juggler. Together they perform a show filled with jaw dropping skills and stomach turning comedy.

Superhero Weekend at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Saturday-Sunday June 27th-28th 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.  For all ages.  Bring your little superheroes to BCM where they will fly over the Brooklyn Bridge like Superman, explore creatures of the sea like Aquaman, complete the challenges of our heroic training camp, and learn about the super power that all families have, love. Families can also explore our new exhibit modHero featuring artist Rogan Josh’s vivid digital pop art depicting superheroes as you’ve never seen them before.  To see the schedule of the events please see the website.

Brick Fest Live at the New York Hall of Science (Flushing)

Celebrating 100 years of the BMT! at the Brighton Beach Station
Saturday-Sunday June 27th-28th 12n-4p.  Free with subway entrance.  Celebrating 100 years of the BMT! Vintage Nostalgia Trains boarding at Brighton Beach.  Ride your way through 100 years of BMT history by hopping on and off at least four different subway car classes including the original BRT/BMT “Standards,” BMT D-Type Triplex, R-11 Prototype and even the IND R-1-9s who began and ended their service on BMT lines. Also visit the Transit Museum’s pop-up retail shop and enjoy activities with the kids.

Dig It at the NY Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturday-Sunday June 27th-28th 130-215p.  For ages 3+.  Free with museum admission.  Did you know that archaeological treasures have been discovered during subway tunnel construction?  Let’s work together to dig up artifacts from our makeshift excavation site.

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Every Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7) (NO Programming Saturday, July 4).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

Pinkalicious, The Musical at Culture Project’s Lynn Redgrave Theater
Saturdays & Sundays 1p until August 30th.  Tickets: $36.50.  For ages 2 to 7y.  Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Saturday & Sunday 1p until June 28th.  See website for additional show times this summer.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
