Weekend Events in Brooklyn & NYC: July 3rd-5th

The 4th of July holiday weekend is almost here and there are lots of fun events to enjoy this weekend in NYC!

This weekend make sure to check out and enjoy Theatreworks USA Presents: Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas) at Lucille Lortel Theatre, Goldilocks & the 3 Bears at PuppetWorks,  the Fourth of July Celebration at the New-York Historical Society, a new Drop-in Sing Along with Lucy Kalantari at LARK, Independence Day in Prospect Park, Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, Target Free First Friday Nights at Children’s Museum of Manhattan and of course the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks.

Also happening this weekend is Design a Vehicle at the NY Transit Museum, a SummerStage Global Family Day in Central Park, Super Sprowtz Live! at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Hot Summer Nights at On Stage at Kingsborough and CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island.

Friday July 3rd
Drop-in Sing Along with Lucy Kalantari at LARK (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Fridays 10–1045a.  Suggested $5 per child.  Lloyd is on summer break so the wonderful Lucy Kalantari is filing in for him this summer!  Lucy Kalantari will be doing a bilingual set of familiar tunes, both old and modern, peppered with her original ditties.

Theatreworks USA Presents: Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas) at Lucille Lortel Theatre (West Village)
Friday July 3rd at 1030a and is running various times until Friday August 7th.  See website for full schedule.  Free.  For ages 3-9y.  This summer Theatreworks will present Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas).  Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the bravest Chihuahua of them all? Skippyjon Jones the Siamese cat who thinks he’s a Mexican Chihuahua of course! While his sisters listen to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Skippy heads off for the REAL adventure awaiting him in his closet. There, as his alter ego Skippito Friskito, and with the help of his friends the Seven Chimichangos, Skippyjon must rescue the beautiful princess Nieve Qué (Snow What), battle the evil dragon and defeat the Bruja. A brand new musical based on the book by Judy Schachner, Skippyjon Jones Snow What is a twist on the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.   Geared for children in K-3rd Grade, this musical adaptation was written by Kevin Del Aguila with music by Eli Bolin.  Since this is a free performance please read the details on how to get tickets and the rules here on the website.

Target Free First Friday Nights at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Friday July 3rd 5-8p.  Free.  On the first Friday of every month admission is free from 5 – 8pm, sponsored by Target.

Coney Island Fireworks
Fridays 930p.  Free.  Enjoy free fireworks every Friday from June 19th through August 21st, 2015. For the best seating, locate yourself on the boardwalk or beach between West 10th Street and West 15th Street.

Saturday July 4th

Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest (Coney Island)
Saturday July 4th 10a-1p.  Free.  WE’RE COUNTING DOWN TO THE BIG DAY!  Last year Joey Chestnut defended his title for an astounding 8th year in a row by eating 61 hot dogs. Can anyone defeat him? The Women’s Champion, Miki Sudo, blew away the competition by putting away 34 hot dogs. Is there a new contender on the horizon? All will be answered July 4 on national TV. Women’s contest live broadcast 11a on ESPN3 and main event live broadcast 12p on ESPN2.  See website for full schedule of events.

Fourth of July Celebration at the New-York Historical Society (UWS)
Saturday July 4th 10a-6p.  Kids 18 and under get free admission all day!  Come celebrate the Fourth of July with us! To commemorate American independence and our special installation Lafayette’s Return, which explores the role of “French Founding Father” in the Revolutionary War, we’re offering with scavenger hunts, musical performances by the Hudson River Ramblers, and other exciting, patriotic programs organized through the DiMenna Children’s History Museum. The History of Ice Cream 12n-4p, Hudson River Ramblers 11a-4p and Independence Day Scavenger Hunt all day.  See website for the full details on the programs.

Independence Day in Prospect Park
Saturday July 4th 12n-5p.  Free.  Join the Prospect Park Alliance on Independence Day for family-friendly activities at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, Lefferts Historic House and the Carousel.  Prospect Park Audubon Center: Eagle as Icon, 12–5 pm.  Join the Prospect Park Alliance to learn how the Bald Eagle became America’s symbol of independence with fun activities and crafts.  Nature’s Helpers 2–3 pm: Did you know that trees help trees? After learning how mulch protects tree roots, spend time spreading wood chips around trees. Nature on the Go!, 3–4 pm: An Alliance naturalist will lead children and families to areas near the Audubon Center, where you can learn about the nature that is all around us and participate in a Citizen Science project!  Animal Encounter, 4–4:30 pm: Want to watch the snake gobble up a mouse? Join Alliance naturalists to meet the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. Learn what it takes to care for these amazing creatures and assist in an actual feeding.  Lefferts Historic House, Independence Day, 2–5 pm $3 suggested donation:  Celebrate America’s birthday and one of the greatest documents ever written. Look extra patriotic as you make yourself a plumed hat to wear while signing your own “John Hancock” on a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence.

Hot Summer Nights at On Stage at Kingsborough
Saturday July 4th 8p.  Admission is free and reservations are not required.  Swingin’ & Swayin’ On The 4th Of July!  The George Gee Swing Orchestra featuring vocalists Hilary Gardner and John Dokes and special guest Lindy Hopper.  Get ready to jump, jive and wail to patriotic and all-American tunes with the George Gee Swing Orchestra. This swingin’ band deeply enjoys its hard-earned reputation as the swingin’-est, blowin’-est, heppest classic big band in New York City!  All concerts take place at Kingsborough’s Bandshell, on the campus of Kingsborough Community College.  Kingsborough’s gates open at 7:00 p.m. and the concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. A limited number of seats are available, but all are welcome to bring blankets and folding chairs for our grassy areas as well. Rain Location: In the event of inclement weather, the concerts will be relocated to the air conditioned Leon M. Goldstein Performing Arts Center. Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks
Saturday July 4th 9p.  Free.  Don’t miss seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist Gloria Estefan’s debut of her original song “America” Featuring VH1 Save the Music’s Park Place Community Middle School Choir from Brooklyn, NY. Plus, tune in to hear new recordings by CMA award-winning artist Rodney Atkins, grammy award winner CeCe Winans and the United States Air Force Band.  The Fireworks may be viewed in Manhattan, Queens & Brooklyn from any area with an unobstructed view of the sky above the East River.  See the website for more viewing details.

Sunday July 5th

Super Sprowtz Live! at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Sunday July 5th 11a. All ages. Free with museum admission. Meet the Super Sprowtz and their Super Trainer Roger for a fun filled show as they share the powers hidden within every veggie and the importance of keeping a healthy body and mind.

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Sunday July 5th  11a-3p and every Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7) (no program July 4th).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.

Sunday July 5th 130-215p.  Free with museum admission.  For ages 3+.  Use spinning wheels and fun art parts to maker your own subway car that moves.

SummerStage Global Family Day in Central Park
Sunday July 5th 2-6p (Doors 2pm / Show 3pm).  Free.  Location: Rumsey Playfield.  Global Family Day: Shine and the Moonbeams with special guest the Noel Pointer Youth Orchestra / The Red Trouser Show / Batoto Yetu / Ziporah Roney and Collaborative Artists.  See the website for all the information on the performers.

American Dream Quilt at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Friday-Sunday July 3rd-5th 2p, 3p & 4p and every day until July 4th.  For ages 5 and older. Free with museum admission.  Contribute to CMOM’s collective American Dream Quilt and express what freedom and happiness means to you.

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

Pinkalicious, The Musical at Culture Project’s Lynn Redgrave Theater
Saturdays & Sundays 1p until August 30th.  Tickets: $36.50.  For ages 2 to 7y.  Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament.

Kids Corner at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Saturdays & Sundays until August 30th 11a-3p. Free. Presented by Sean Meenan and Habana Works. The Kid’s Corner is a weekend program that offers free, creative workshops and crafts that teach environmentalism, wellness and community to neighborhood kids.   July 4th & 5th- Toilet Paper Roll Rockets! Have a blast this 4th of July with cool rockets.
