Hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend with their friends and family and are excited about all the new weekday events starting up this week!

Happy Birthday Frida Kahlo at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (SOHO)
Monday July 6th 12n-5p, Thursday-Friday July 9th-10th 12n-6p  and Saturday-Sunday July 11th-12th 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.  Visit CMA for a week full of celebration of famed Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo’s birthday! Frida Kahlo, born July 6, 1907, is known for her prolific painting career… particularly for her iconic self portraits!  Help us celebrate Frida and participate in a variety of workshops, including: Help us celebrate Frida and participate in a variety of workshops, including:  Create a personalized self portrait in the Fine Arts Studio using mixed media. Frida often used symbolism in her paintings, which she referred to as a “window to her soul”. What symbols or objects would you add to your self portrait to represent you? Also FriDamensional! Find inspiration in Frida Kahlo’s paintings and turn elements of her work into three dimensional clay sculptures at the Clay Bar!

Art in July: Drop-In Art Workshop at the Jewish Museum (UWS)
Mondays in July 1-4p.  For ages 3 & up.  Free with Museum Admission.  Join us in the studio for creative projects inspired by the works of art and moving images featured in our current exhibitions: Repetition and Difference; Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings: Chantal Joffe; Masterpieces & Curiosities: Nicole Eisenman’s Seder; and Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth of American Television.  July 6th Repetition & Printmaking.  Experiment with printmaking to create multiple copies of the same image using various colors and papers. Investigate the similarities and differences between each version, inspired by the artists featured in Repetition and Difference.  See website on the additional July workshops.

Hudson River Park’s River Rangers at Pier 25 (Tribeca)
Mondays at 2p until August 24th.  Location:  Pier 25 at N. Moore St.  Free.  Appropriate for kids ages 4-9.  Kids explore the wonders of the Hudson River ecosystem through discovery-based science experiments and nature-inspired crafts.

Tuesday July 7th

Kids’ Discovery Stations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Tuesday July 7th 1015a-1230p and Tuesday-Friday until August 28th.  This docent-led, drop-in program is for families with children of all ages as well as camp groups. Free with Garden admission.  Get your hands dirty at kids’ discovery stations throughout the Garden. Investigate a mystery plant, hold a water plant and learn how it floats, or go on a pollinator hunt in the meadow! All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.

CMA:  Hudson River Outpost at Pier 25 (Tribeca)
Tuesdays from now until August 25th 1-230p for all ages.  Free.  *Workshops are weather dependent. Please check the website for daily updates or give us a call at (212) 274-0986.  Location: at Pier 25 at N. Moore St.  CMA will be putting the ARTS in S.T.E.M. in partnership with Hudson River Park Trust by inviting families to contribute to a Collaborative Diorama Project: Water Habitat Layers Collaborative! Each week, young artists will have a chance to explore the deep aquatic environment of the Hudson through thematic art workshops; while also contributing to a collaborative community project that will evolve throughout the summer. No registration required, just drop-in contribute when you are in the area on Tuesdays 1-2:30. This is a family program, no age restrictions applied. Children with disabilities are welcome.  This program happens outdoors: please wear appropriate sun protection. Materials are limited to first come, first served.  July 7: Submarine Window Scenes

Red Hook Flicks at Valentino Pier
Tuesday July 7th until September 1st.  The movies start at around 830p or when it gets dark.  Red Hook Films are shown at Valentino Pier, on the Brooklyn waterfront. The screen is set up in front of a Civil War-era warehouse, with sweeping views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop.  In case of rain, our kind sponsors at Home/Made will be hosting us at their event space Atelier Roquette, located at 63 Commerce Street, between Van Brunt and Richards.  If it is raining, assume the movie will be at Atelier Roquette.  If it was raining earlier, the grounds could still be mucky. Please check website for an official “rain” call by 6p on movie nights.  July 7:  Jurassic Park

Wednesday July 8th

Superhero Training Lab at the Brooklyn Public Library (Park Slope)
Wednesday July 8th 3-4p.  Free.  For children ages 6 and up.  This program is limited to 20 participants, so arrive early to claim a seat!  Have you signed up for Summer Reading and want to complete your six Summer Reading game board challenges? Join us to work on challenge number two – design & create a superhero costume and gear. With the help of artist Mark Ziemann, we’ll use art supplies and a dash of imagination to design and construct a face mask.

Hippo Playground Concert Series in Riverside Park (UWS)
Wednesdays 4-5p in July.  Free.  Join us for some of the most talented children’s musicians in the area.  Each musician will play a full hour of entertaining music.  July 8th: Amelia Robinson of Mil’s Trills.  See website for information on upcoming performances.

SummerScreen in McCarren Park (Williamsburg)
Wednesdays until August 12th.  Free.  Doors open at 6pm, with food vendors and live music. Films at sundown.  Location: At the corner of North 12th St. and Bedford Ave.  July 8th: Clueless ~ A rich high school student tries to boost a new pupil’s popularity, but reckons without affairs of the heart getting in the way.  Rated PG-13.  97 minutes.  See website for future movie titles.

Thursday July 9th

Lawn Time for Little Ones at the High Line
Thursdays 10-11a in July & August.  Free.  Lawn Time for Little Ones is a drop-in program (no RSVP required), and is open to kids ages 0-5 accompanied by caregivers. Location: On the High Line at West 23rd Street.  Every Thursday in July and August, stop by the 23rd Street Lawn to enjoy a delightful morning of storytelling, and sing-alongs, bubbles, and blocks with your little ones from local partners and stick around to build with blocks, explore art materials, and chase bubbles across the grass.
Broadway in Bryant Park (Midtown West)
Thursdays 1230-130p until August 13th.  Free.  The best of musicals on and off Broadway showcase their hits, plus lots of surprises from other Broadway shows. July 9th: 106.7 LITE FM Host: Delilah Co-Host: Penn & Teller.  Stomp, Wicked, It Shoulda Been You, Fuerza Bruta.

7th Annual Summer Movie Series at the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum (UWS)
Thursdays in July & August 13th. 730p.  Free.  Join the Intrepid Museum for its seventh annual Summer Movie Series. Enjoy FREE feature films on the flight deck, under the stars! This year, for the first time ever, each film will be introduced by a special guest.  Bring your lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.  REMINDER: Doors open at 730p, and the program begins at sunset, weather permitting. Space is limited. Admission tickets (free of charge) will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis before the screening starting at 615p.  July 9th October Sky ~ In this true story, Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son, is inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry—against his father’s wishes. Monday-Friday various times.  See website for schedule of events.  Free with museum admission.  Join us for a week of insect-related activities. As you’re exploring our exhibits, be on the lookout for special bug tabletop activities, videos and even some live bugs!

$1 Movies at NYC Regal Theaters (various locations)
Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10a until August 26th.  Family fun movies playing on Tuesdays & Wednesdays for the summertime.  Admission to these movies during the Summer Movie Express is only $1. Tickets must be purchased at the theater and all movies start at 10:00 am. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Will Rogers Institute. Theatreworks USA Presents: Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas) at Lucille Lortel Theatre (West Village)
Monday-Fridays until August 7th 1030a & 1p but be sure to check the calendar for the exact dates/times and weekend dates/times..  See website for full schedule.  Free.  For ages 3-9y.  This summer Theatreworks will present Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas).  Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the bravest Chihuahua of them all? Skippyjon Jones the Siamese cat who thinks he’s a Mexican Chihuahua of course! While his sisters listen to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Skippy heads off for the REAL adventure awaiting him in his closet. There, as his alter ego Skippito Friskito, and with the help of his friends the Seven Chimichangos, Skippyjon must rescue the beautiful princess Nieve Qué (Snow What), battle the evil dragon and defeat the Bruja. A brand new musical based on the book by Judy Schachner, Skippyjon Jones Snow What is a twist on the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.   Geared for children in K-3rd Grade, this musical adaptation was written by Kevin Del Aguila with music by Eli Bolin.  Since this is a free performance please read the details on how to get tickets and the rules here on the website.

“The collectivity project” for Kids on the High Line
Tuesdays & Thursdays now through September 4-6p.  Free.  Location: West 30th Street.  Build, play, and dream about cities using LEGOs and your imagination. Led by a High Line Educator, these special programs just for families are part of Olafur Eliason’s The collectivity project.

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Mon-Sat: 10a-7p & Sun: 10a-6p.  Free.  Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.  The Splash Pad, officially known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

Art in the Park in Madison Square Park (Flatiron)
Mondays & Wednesdays 10a-2p until September 30th.  No sessions on the last Monday of each month (7/27, 8/31 & 8/28).  Free.  The Mad. Sq. Park Teaching Artist can be found in the Moira Ann Smith Playground each Monday and Wednesday from June 1 – September 30 with free hands-on creative arts activities at 10am and 2pm. Children are encouraged to participate in free flowing art-based activities. Adult supervision is required.

Summer Art in the Park in Riverside Park (UWS)
Monday-Friday now until August 28th 10a-12n.  Free.  Location: Hippo Playground.  For all ages.  No registration required.  This popular summertime favorite will return to Hippo Playground this summer.  Please join us each weekday for this enriching art program.  The class will take place at the picnic tables in the playground.  In the event of rain, the program will be held in the park house.

Jeppe Hein: Please Touch the Art at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Open daily 6a-1a until April 17, 2016.  Free.  Visitors entering the park at Pier 1 will encounter Hein’s iconic water sculpture, Appearing Rooms installed on the Bridge View Lawn. Vertical jets of water will gradually appear forming seven-foot-tall “walls”, which moments later will disappear, enabling visitors to move to different “rooms”, all without touching a drop of water. Systematically, these “walls” appear and disappear through a timed cycle, enticing visitors to step onto the gridded platform and move from space to space within the sculpture. The cycle of changing walls may also be observed from outside the piece as a dynamic and perceptually engaging work of art.  The second major component of the exhibition is a newly conceived, large-scale Mirror Labyrinth to be installed at the Pier 3 Greenway Terrace.  The third body of work, Modified Social Benches, will be on view throughout the park,surprising visitors with each chance encounter.  See website fore the full descriptions of the art.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Monday-Friday 1030a & 12n and also 230p on Wednesdays in July & August.  See website for weekend showtimes.   Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
