Friday July 10th

Ready, Set, Kindergarten at various Brooklyn Public Library branches
Summer Session 2015 starts Friday-Sunday July 10th-12th at various locations and every weekend until August 16th.  Free.   Have fun at the library and help your child get ready for school.  For children 3 to 5 years and participating parents or caregivers.  Families enjoy stories and activities designed to encourage the development of early learning skills. Exploring literacy, science, and math through music, stories, crafts, and play will help you and your child get ready for school! Families will receive free materials to continue the learning and fun at home.  See the flyer for all the information on branches and times.

Lucy Kalantari with Red Yarn at LARK Cafe (Flatbush/Prospect Park South)
Friday July 10th 10-1115a.  $10/family (suggested donation)  This Friday’s LARK sing-along will delight you with a double-feature! Joining Lucy Kalantari all the way from Portland, Oregon will be Red Yarn, doing a wonderful show with music and puppetry.

SummerStage Kids: CityParks PuppetMobile at Brower Park (Crown Heights)
Friday July 10th 1030-1130a.  Free.  The CityParks PuppetMobile’s original production, Tales of Brier Rabbit, follows the adventures of notorious trickster Brier Rabbit, who is once again up to no good. Deceiving and stealing from his fellow animal friends, Brier Rabbit thinks he’s much too clever to ever get caught. However, in this modern adaptation of the American folk tale, Brier Rabbit’s pals are on to his tricks, and set out to teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget!

Movies @ the Library: Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army)
Friday July 10th 230-430p.  Free.  Location: Dweck Center.  The imaginative world of Dr. Seuss comes to life like never before in this visually spectacular adventure from the creators of Despicable Me!  Twelve-year-old Ted will do anything to find a real live Truffula Tree in order to impress the girl of his dreams.  As he embarks on his journey, Ted discovers the incredible story of the Lorax, a grumpy but charming creature who speaks for the trees (2012, 86 minutes).

Saturday July 11th

Arty Hours at the High Line
Saturdays 10a-12n starting July 11th until August 22nd.  Free.  Location: 23rd Street Lawn.  Arty Hours is a drop-in program (no RSVP required), and is open to kids ages 4+ accompanied by caregivers. Up, down, and all around from 30 feet in the air!  Bbe inspired by what you’ll see from and on the High Line during Arty Hours. Kids and their caregivers are invited to take advantage of our unique view of the city and surrounding area and create art that is inspired by site-specific works from Panorama, a High Line Art group exhibition. At each Arty Hour, young builders can create one-of-a-kind vehicles, forts, structures, and machines with the High Line Children’s Workyard Kit, a crate of kid-friendly planks, nuts, bolts, and other custom materials by industrial designer Cas Holman.  In the event of rain or lawn closure, Arty Hours will take place in the 14th Street Passage.  July 11: Freeze Frame

Toddlers Rock! with Suzi Shelton at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Saturday July 11th 11a & 12n.  For ages 5 & under.  Free with museum admission.  Suzi Shelton is excited to return to CMOM in their interactive FROLIC! performance space with percussionist Ethan Meyer for these 2 family friendly shows. Suzi will be featuring her new hit songs “Go, Fire Truck, Go!” and “Cinnamon Bear,” from her latest award winning album “Smile In My Heart.” Suzi’s shows are packed with energy and fun, and guaranteed to get the kids (and grown ups) up and dancing!

Bug Day at New York Hall of Science (Flushing)
Saturday July 11th 12n-4p.  Free with NYSCI admission.  Bug Day Activities 12n-4p.  See website for schedule and Talks: 1p & 3p “Crickers: Why Eat Bugs?”. Bug tastings, a carnivorous plant workshop, and of course, live bugs, are all part of the fun at this one-day, annual event! You can learn about and handle a variety of bugs, including an array of insects and spiders presented by members of the New York City Entomological Society, and NYSCI’s own hissing cockroaches. Join a carnivorous plant workshop to learn about plants that eat bugs. Meet a local beekeeper and sample some honey. Or if you’re craving something more adventurous, eat some bugs at our Bug Café, where you can taste different bug-based products and learn about entomophagy, the practice of eating insects.

The Pop-ups at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Saturday July 11th 2-3p.  Free with museum admission.  For all ages.  The Pop Ups are a two-time GRAMMY nominated children’s musical duo based in Brooklyn. Their performances use cardboard props, hand-painted sets, and a cast of original puppets. Recognized as one of the country’s top 15 kids’ bands by Time Out New York Kids, they made their television debut on Sprout’s Sunny Side Up Show in 2014, and recently released their third album, Appetite For Construction, to critical acclaim.

Movies in the Parks: The Amazing Spider Man 2 in Coffey Park (Red Hook)
Saturday July 11th 830-1030p.  Free.  Join NYC Parks for free, family-friendly movies in our city’s parks!  The Amazing Spider Man 2 brings Spider Man back to the silver screen.  In this sequel, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) faces off against the villainous Electro (Jamie Foxx) to save New York City.  Rated PG-13.  Parents should be cautious about bringing children under 13.  Know Before You Go: You should come before 8:30 p.m. to get your spot. Please bring your own picnic blanket or chair, as there is a limited supply of chairs reserved for seniors or people with disabilities. Food is OK, but no alcohol. Reservations are not taken, so space is available on a first come first served basis. All are welcome!

Sunday July 12th

Little Laffs at the Jalopy Theatre (Carroll Gardens/Red Hook)
Sunday July 12th. Show starts at 1030a (first Sunday of every month) Tickets: $5 Kids, $10 Adults (Includes a free Bloody Mary or Mimosa), $25 Family.  Little Laffs, “Big Fun for Little Ones” is a fun and entertaining variety show for kids ages 3-9, that mixes juggling, balloon art, music, comedy, and more. Located at the Fabulous Jalopy Theatre in Carroll Gardens/Red Hook, Brooklyn. Join us for an afternoon full of Little Laffs!  Little Laffs – Big Fun for Little Ones! Pier Kids: Play Date in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Sunday June 12th 11a-1p and Sundays until August 9th.  Free.  Feel-good rockin’ children’s music!  Interactive, feel-good and fun rocking tunes for the whole family and perfect for ages 2-8.  The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy presents, Award-winning, kiddie music duo, Play Date in concert! They’ll be bringing their guitars and infectious, positive energy playing popular songs like “Dance Like a Monster,” “Anyone Can Sing,” “Rad,” and debuting songs from their new album, We All Shine!  The program is followed by art activities from Private Picassos at 12 pm and an outdoor pop-up reading room from the Uni Project.  Pier Kids is a weekly program until August 9th.  See the website for more information.

Hip Tot Family Day at Lakeside Rink in Prospect Park
Sunday July 12th 11a-2p.  Free.  Join in on the fun at Hip Tot Family Day @ Lakeside. Families will enjoy the original, interactive songs of Brooklyn’s own Mil’s Trills, a children’s music project led by Amelia Robinson, that invites families to celebrate the community through original interactive tunes and a rotating cast of musical guests.  Hip Tot is excited to have Melanie Hope Greenberg return, author and illustrator of Mermaids on Parade, joining us for July.  Although the concert is free, roller skate rentals and food does indeed cost some money. Still, if you are not interested in skating or eating, you can get your feet wet in the Splash Pad!

Bastille Day on 60th Street (UES)
Sunday July 12th 12n-5p.  Free.  Location: Between Fifth and Lexington Avenues.  For over ten years, Bastille Day on 60th Street has been the largest public celebration in New York commemorating France’s Independence Day (July 14, 1789) and France’s historic friendship with the United States.  Enjoy an afternoon of French food, culture, and entertainment! This year’s edition will include an even greater line-up of exciting events, with new activities including a champagne tasting in our beautiful Skyroom, free film screenings for kids and families, and talented performers making their Bastille Day debut on the main stage. Enter the popular Prize Drawing for a chance to win incredible prizes including trips to Paris, Bordeaux and New Orleans. Indulge in French delicacies like crêpes, éclairs, macarons, and more at booths along 60th street. Savor a great selection of wines, cheeses, beers, and cocktails at tastings at FIAF. Enjoy performances by Can-Can dancers, the Chorale Arpège from Martinique, the Franco-American electro/pop/swing band Ginkgoa, the Hungry March Band and more. Hudson River Park’s Pop Up Maker Space at 14th St (Greenwich Village)
Sundays at 1p until August 23rd.  Free.  Guided Maker workshops challenge participants to design and construct projects inspired by science and nautical concepts.  Come tinker and test solutions to real-world challenges!

All Weekend

Family Discovery Weekends at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Saturdays & Sundays 1030a-230p until August 23rd.  Free with Garden admission.  This is a drop-in program for families with children of all ages.  Stop by the pavilion to create a nature-based craft, artwork, or invention.  Experiment, learn, and play together in the Discovery Garden. Hands-on stations throughout the garden’s meadow, woodland, and marsh habitats, and in the vegetable garden encourage families to explore nature together. All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.  See website for additional days in the fall.

New York Transit Museum Vintage Bus Bash on Governors Island
Saturday-Sunday July 11th-12th 11a-4p.  Location: Colonels Row.  See information on ferry service and prices.  The New York Transit Museum’s fleet of vintage buses heads to Governors Island for a summer weekend! Iconic “fishbowl” style windshields, a two-tone green color scheme, Jackie Gleason’s famed bus driver appearance in The Honeymooners, and the first air-conditioned bus in the country transport visitors back to the 1940s and 1950s.

CMA at the Bronx Zoo
Saturday-Sunay July 11th-12tn 11a-4p.  Free with zoo admission.   For ages 5+.  Spend your weekend at the Bronx Zoo and join CMA for a hands-on art making workshop inspired by the newly re-opened Children’s Zoo. Inspired by artist Alexander Calder and animals throughout the Children’s Zoo, young artists will create their own hanging mobile with a CMA Teaching Artist! Young Artists will use a variety of materials, such as paper, popsicle sticks, beads, as well as natural materials like sticks, pinecones, and leaves to create their own, unique mobile. Participants will be encouraged to include representations of their favorite animals from the newly opened children’s zoo in their nature-inspired mobile!  Location: Dancing Crane Plaza.  Also happening July 25th-26th.

Sounds-Portation Bingo at the NY Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturday-Sunday July 11th-12th 130-215p. For ages 4+. Free with museum admission. If you think you’ve heard it all when it comes to transportation in New York City, join us for a few round of bing when we’ll match sounds of city travel with images and objects found at the Museum.

Theatreworks USA Presents: Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas) at Lucille Lortel Theatre (West Village)
Ongoing at various times until Friday August 7th.  See website for full schedule.  Free.  For ages 3-9y.  This summer Theatreworks will present Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas).  Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the bravest Chihuahua of them all? Skippyjon Jones the Siamese cat who thinks he’s a Mexican Chihuahua of course! While his sisters listen to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Skippy heads off for the REAL adventure awaiting him in his closet. There, as his alter ego Skippito Friskito, and with the help of his friends the Seven Chimichangos, Skippyjon must rescue the beautiful princess Nieve Qué (Snow What), battle the evil dragon and defeat the Bruja. A brand new musical based on the book by Judy Schachner, Skippyjon Jones Snow What is a twist on the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.   Geared for children in K-3rd Grade, this musical adaptation was written by Kevin Del Aguila with music by Eli Bolin.  Since this is a free performance please read the details on how to get tickets and the rules here on the website.

Happy Birthday Frida Kahlo at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (SOHO)
Friday July 10th 12n-6p  and Saturday-Sunday July 11th-12th 10a-5p.  Free with museum admission.  Visit CMA for a week full of celebration of famed Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo’s birthday! Frida Kahlo, born July 6, 1907, is known for her prolific painting career… particularly for her iconic self portraits!  Help us celebrate Frida and participate in a variety of workshops, including: Help us celebrate Frida and participate in a variety of workshops, including:  Create a personalized self portrait in the Fine Arts Studio using mixed media. Frida often used symbolism in her paintings, which she referred to as a “window to her soul”. What symbols or objects would you add to your self portrait to represent you? Also FriDamensional! Find inspiration in Frida Kahlo’s paintings and turn elements of her work into three dimensional clay sculptures at the Clay Bar!

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.

Pinkalicious, The Musical at Culture Project’s Lynn Redgrave Theater
Saturdays & Sundays 1p until August 30th.  Tickets: $36.50.  For ages 2 to 7y.  Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament.

Kids Corner at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Saturdays & Sundays until August 30th 11a-3p. Free. Presented by Sean Meenan and Habana Works. The Kid’s Corner is a weekend program that offers free, creative workshops and crafts that teach environmentalism, wellness and community to neighborhood kids.   July 11th & 12th- Spoon Dolls! Use our own cutlery made from potato starch and 100% compostable to make fun dolls.
