Looks like the weather is going to be awesome for another busy weekend of fun family events here in NYC!

Friday August 7th

Theatreworks USA Presents: Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas) at Lucille Lortel Theatre (West Village)
Friday August 7th. Last day!  Free.  For ages 3-9y.  This summer Theatreworks will present Skippyjon Jones Snow What (& the 7 Chihuahuas).  Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the bravest Chihuahua of them all? Skippyjon Jones the Siamese cat who thinks he’s a Mexican Chihuahua of course! While his sisters listen to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Skippy heads off for the REAL adventure awaiting him in his closet. There, as his alter ego Skippito Friskito, and with the help of his friends the Seven Chimichangos, Skippyjon must rescue the beautiful princess Nieve Qué (Snow What), battle the evil dragon and defeat the Bruja. A brand new musical based on the book by Judy Schachner, Skippyjon Jones Snow What is a twist on the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.   Geared for children in K-3rd Grade, this musical adaptation was written by Kevin Del Aguila with music by Eli Bolin.  Since this is a free performance please read the details on how to get tickets and the rules here on the website.

Target Free First Friday Nights at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Friday August 7th 5-8p.  Free.  On the first Friday of every month admission is free from 5 – 8pm, sponsored by Target.

Summer Stroll on Third Avenue in Bay Ridge
Friday August 7th & 14th from 6-10p.  Free.  Third Avenue from 69th-80th Street.  Take a leisurely stroll along 3rd Avenue and expeirence enriched cultural exhibitions, performances, your favorite author’s book signing, chess challenges for kids, crafts for young at heart, local shops, foodie haven and good ole laughter.

SummerStarz Movies: How To Train Your Dragon 2 in Transmitter Park
Friday August 7th 7-10p.  Free.  Movie begin at sunset around 8p.  Come on out to WNYC Transmitter Park on the gorgeous Greenpoint waterfront. Bring a picnic blanket, friends & family. Come early and have an awesome time!  How to Train Your Dragon 2:  hen Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. (IMDB) Rated PG.

Saturday August 8th

Summer Streets 2015: Week 2 (Manhattan)
Saturday August 8th 7a-1p.  Free.  On August 8th and 15th from 7 AM to 1 PM, nearly seven miles of New York City’s streets will be opened up for everyone to play, run, walk and bike.  From the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets, you can water slide, soar through the air on a zip line, dance, get fit, immerse yourself in a public art and architecture tours or just stroll along and experience the city’s streets in a new way—all for free.  See the website for the map and more information.  It is mandatory to register for the water slide.  Registration is closed for August 1st.  Register here for August 8th or 15th.

DUMBO Family Fest
Saturday August 8th 11a-1p.  Free and open to the public.  Enter at the corner of John & Jay St.  Celebrating the John Street and Main Street sections of Brooklyn Bridge Park.  Take in the newest views from Brooklyn Bridge Park and enjoy kids activities with local partners. The afternoon will be filled with face painting, arts & crafts, food trucks, music by the Hungry March Band and more!

5th Annual History Day at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park (Coney Island)
Saturday August 8th 1-6p.  Free.  Rain date: Sunday August 9th.  Enjoy live music, dancing and history at the 5th Annual History Day at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, Coney Island’s oldest amusement park, and the Coney Island History Project. This year’s festivities are a celebration of the 95th anniversary of the 1920 landmark Deno’s Wonder Wheel and the 60th anniversary of the 1955 Spook-A-Rama, Coney’s last classic dark ride.  Pick up a schedule and souvenir map of the historic attractions in Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park at locations throughout the park and at the Coney Island History Project. PLUS see our Stilt Walker for a 95th Anniversary Balloon!  Five years have passed since Hiccup and Toothless united the dragons and Vikings of Berk. Now, they spend their time charting the island’s unmapped territories. During one of their adventures, the pair discover a secret cave that houses hundreds of wild dragons — and a mysterious dragon rider who turns out to be Hiccup’s long-lost mother, Valka (Cate Blanchett). Hiccup and Toothless then find themselves at the center of a battle to protect Berk from a power-hungry warrior named Drago.  See the website for more information.

New York Horses at the NY Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturday August 8th 130-215p.  Free with museum admission.  The horse-drawn street car last carried New York City passengers in the summer of 1917.  People relied on horses a lot less when motor buses, cable cars and subways started moving people faaster and farther.  What was it like to rely on horses for travel?  Learn all about working horses and the history of the horsecar in New York and meet a working horse from Brooklyn’s Kensington Stables.

SummerStage Kids: CityParks PuppetMobile Tales of Brier Rabbit in South Oxford Park (Fort Greene)
Saturday August 8th 5-545p.  Free.  The CityParks PuppetMobile’s original production, Tales of Brier Rabbit, follows the adventures of notorious trickster Brier Rabbit, who is once again up to no good. Deceiving and stealing from his fellow animal friends, Brier Rabbit thinks he’s much too clever to ever get caught. However, in this modern adaptation of the American folk tale, Brier Rabbit’s pals are on to his tricks, and set out to teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget!

Sunday August 9th

Transit Time Capsules at the NY Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Sunday August 9th 130-215p.  For all ages.  Free with museum admission.  MTA employees recently unearthed a 1950 time capsule buried just a couple of blocks away from the Transit Museum.  Record your 2015 story of New York City travels for safekeeping in a time capsule of your design.

Hip Tot Family Day at Lakeside Prospect Park
Sunday August 9th 11a-12n.  Free.  Get ready to jam with our favorite foodies, Rolie Polie Guacamole at Hip Tot Family Day @ Lakeside. The whole family will love how they blend acoustic rock, funk, and folk and turn it into original tunes about natural living, eating healthy and staying active. We might even get to hear some songs from their upcoming album, Chips & Salsa!  And catch this bone — Dog on Fleas will be there with their mix of blue grass, rock n’ roll and fun. Led by Grammy Winner Dean Jones, these guys will get you out of the dog house and onto the dance floor!  By popular demand The Magik Theater will be back to make the crowd roar with laughter and our favorite Park Slope dancers from Jéte Dance Center will be showing us their moves! The Brooklyn Public Library will have activities, small giveaways and you will be able to register kids for Library cards.

Pier Kids: Dirty Sock Funtime Band in Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6
Sunday August 9th 11a-1p.  Free.  Last one!  The DIRTY SOCK FUNTIME BAND is a wild, technicolor musical adventure where anything can happen! Come dance with them from 11 am til noon.  The program is followed by art activities from Private Picassos at 12 pm and an outdoor pop-up reading room from the Uni Project.

City Parks Family Day: INVINCIBLE: Michael Jackson Tribute / Marika Hughes & Bottom Heavy in East River Park
Sunday August 9th 4-7p.  Free.  The performance will take place in the amphitheater; Cherry Street between Jackson Street & FDR Drive.  INVINCIBLE: Michael Jackson Tribute: INVINCIBLE is a live multi-media spectacular with performances of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits including, “Thriller,” “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Man In the Mirror” and many more! The show features talented artists who can sing live while also executing the intense dancing that the King of Pop was so famous for. This show captures the spirit and essence of watching and listening to Michael Jackson  perform live onstage like no other! Don’t miss the “Dance Like Michael” workshop prior to the performance.  Bottom Heavy instantly established itself as a strong new sound; flowing freely between funky instrumentals, dreamy lullabies in soul and blues inflected songs. Marika Hughes fronts the band with such ease and so naturally it makes one wonder why cellos haven’t always fronted bands. Her stylings are reminiscent of her classical upbringig yet defy expectation as she moves us with her supple vocals through jazz, funk, soul, rock, and back again.

Movies in the Parks: Monsters University in Kolbert Park (Midwood)
Sunday August 9th 8-1030p.  Free.  Join NYC Parks for free, family-friendly movies in our city’s parks!  Movies in the Parks: Monsters University:  Ever since he was a kid monster, Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) has dreamed of becoming a Scarer. To make his dream a reality, he enrolls at Monsters University. During his first semester, he meets Sulley (John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. Sulley and Mike engage in a fierce rivalry that ultimately gets them both kicked out of MU’s elite Scare Program. To make things right, Mike and Sulley — along with a bunch of misfit monsters — will have to learn to work together.  Know Before You Go: You should come before 8:30 p.m. to get your spot. Please bring your own picnic blanket or chair, as there is a limited supply of chairs reserved for seniors or people with disabilities. Food is OK, but no alcohol or smoking. Reservations are not taken, so space is available on a first come first served basis. All are welcome!

All Weekend

Family Discovery Weekends at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Saturdays & Sundays 1030a-230p until August 23rd.  Free with Garden admission.  This is a drop-in program for families with children of all ages.  Stop by the pavilion to create a nature-based craft, artwork, or invention.  Experiment, learn, and play together in the Discovery Garden. Hands-on stations throughout the garden’s meadow, woodland, and marsh habitats, and in the vegetable garden encourage families to explore nature together. All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.  See website for additional days in the fall.

2015 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Queens)
Saturday-Sunday August 8th-9th 10a-430p.  This much anticipated multicultural event features two exciting days of dragon boat racing, wonderful performances, and an ethnic food court.  For the full schedule of activities, please visit the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival website.

BioBus at the New York Hall of Science (Flughsing)
Saturday-Sunday August 8th-9th 12n-4p.  Free with NYSCI admission.  Travel into worlds smaller than the eye can see aboard the BioBus, the world’s only state-of-the-art microscope facility housed on a solar-powered 1974 transit bus. Zoom in on the tiniest of animals to find its microscopic beating heart, or use a handheld microscope to magnify your own eye and watch it pulsate in response to light. Project your discoveries onto large digital displays for your friends and family to see. Suitable for all ages and backgrounds, so come on board for a carbon-neutral, hands-on tour of the microscopic world.  (Please note that the capacity of BioBus is 30 individuals and that we will accommodate visitors on a first-come first-served basis.)

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Fridays 1030a & 12n and Saturdays & Sundays 1p.  See website for additional weekday show times this summer.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.

Kids Corner at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Saturdays & Sundays until August 30th 11a-3p. Free. Presented by Sean Meenan and Habana Works. The Kid’s Corner is a weekend program that offers free, creative workshops and crafts that teach environmentalism, wellness and community to neighborhood kids.  August 8th & 9th- Popsicle Stick Bracelets

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.

Pinkalicious, The Musical at Culture Project’s Lynn Redgrave Theater
Saturdays & Sundays 1p until August 30th.  Tickets: $36.50.  For ages 2 to 7y.  Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten at various Brooklyn Public Library branches
Summer Session 2015 at various locations and every weekend until August 16th.  Free.   Have fun at the library and help your child get ready for school.  For children 3 to 5 years and participating parents or caregivers.  Families enjoy stories and activities designed to encourage the development of early learning skills. Exploring literacy, science, and math through music, stories, crafts, and play will help you and your child get ready for school!
